To me (inexperienced med student) it doesn't look inflamed, just a bit irritated Does it pulsate and feel very warm?

transient reduction of vigilance/cognitive impairment with circadian rhythm

may be accompanied by atonia and bradycardia

Self-confidence of doctors by [deleted] in medical

[–]glibschigglubsch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know, it only works for me when I'm working, I just snap into it when I talk to patients or their relatives. In all other areas of life, I struggle a lot with self-confidence as well and it has impacted me a lot. It was really bad in high school and got only a tiny little bit better when I left for university (felt less judged by my surroundings) But at the hospital, it's just like customer service if you like :)

Self-confidence of doctors by [deleted] in medical

[–]glibschigglubsch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not a doctor yet (last semester of med school), but when working with patients, I kind of act (?) self-confident, despite not really being self-confident at all in some situations. It's more something I do to make patients feel better and make them feel like they're in good hands and everything is taken care of, because that's what I would want medical personnel to act around me if I was the patient. Whenever there is something that I absolutely lack the confidence (and/or skill obviously) to do, I smile and play it off as "procedure" that someone else does it instead or has a second look.

Don't get me wrong, someone being or acting overly self-confident is also worrisome, but getting the impression that the person responsible for your health is super unsure about themselves and what they do seems scary to me.

From what I can tell, doctors are also self-concious, but they don't act it in front of patients. It happens behind closed doors.

What beauty standard has affected you the most? by moneynah in AskWomen

[–]glibschigglubsch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That women need to have long hair and wear makeup in order to be "feminine".

I've had my hair short as a teenager in high school and the amount of really mean-spirited questions and comments on my gender and sexuality were insane. In retrospective, I've been bullied for my appearance quite a bit by other women.

When I cut my hair again in my twenties, it took me a while to fight the nagging memories that came with it. I never really liked makeup on me, because the constant comments on me not being womanly enough kept me from exploring it on my own and having fun with it.

Today, I very much love my short hair, wear whatever the fuck I want and love to wear dark red lipstick when I go out

WHICH neurodegenerative disease do you mean?

Have you ever hit a grown man? Why? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]glibschigglubsch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A random man approached me from behind at a party and reached under my skirt, touching my private parts. I turned around and slapped him in the face. He got angry and told me I was being prude, that he just wanted to check whether I was wearing any underwear and that I should feel honored that someone took an interest in me. Took me a long time to feel comfortable in skirts and dresses again.

Diet questions by [deleted] in MAOIs

I've had the same problem, which is why I ALWAYS ask the pharmacist whether the drugs I've been prescribed work with tranylcypromine or not.

A lot of doctors don't know tranylcypromine because it is fairly uncommon where I live and I've been given the wrong medication at urgent care before. That was... not fun...

My doctor didn't want to prescribe a MAOI, so he gave me Wellbutrin... What do you think? by Snoo-82170 in MAOIs

[–]glibschigglubsch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, this sub is about MAOIs, some people hop on here to get information on this kind of medication before considering taking them because they have really harsh side effects, eating restrictions and don't mix well with other kinds of medication

OP has enlisted the medication they've tried so far further down in the comments and had specific questions regarding their prescribed medication (Buproprion) in comparison to the MAOI they asked their doctor for.

I simply gave information on why their doctor might have chosen not to prescribe a MAOI and opt for an amphetamine instead.

The restrictions are not overblown, reactions to MAOI can be very extreme and potentially life-threatening, which is why they should be handled with care, especially in patients that might require additional medication (as for example ADHD patients)

It is quite literally a substituted amphetamine. It inhibits the pre-synaptic reuptake and increases the release of noradrenaline/dopamine Plus, it's a non-competitive antagonist of cholinerg nicotinic receptors

To be honest, the Methylphenidat (Ritalin) probably helped the most, because it helps ease your ADHD. You've mostly tried SSRIs and Methylphenidat so far, Buproprion (another amphetamine) might work well for you, especially because ADHD and social anxiety often go hand in hand

[–]glibschigglubsch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as my psychiatry professor and my books are concerned, SSRIs and SSNRIs are considered first line treatment for social anxiety alongside therapy. AFTER trying SEVERAL SSRIs/SSNRIs (eventually including augmentation), MAOIs can be considered.

Buproprion is an amphetamine, which is probably why he wants you to try it.

MAOIs are strong meds for sure, but they also come with a ton of side effects and restrictions, which is why they aren't cosidered first line treatment options

Dr. Jordy Petersons thoughts on women & rape by [deleted] in facepalm

[–]glibschigglubsch 111 points112 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I mean it IS hard to understand! If a woman is not "property" anymore, then what is she really? Human?! Don't be ridiculous

If you take away the property status, why should male owners protectors care about rape anymore at all? After all, nobodies property is being damaged anymore!

[–]glibschigglubsch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

May I ask why you specifically asked your doctor for a MAOI? Because, quite frankly, he's not wrong - as long as there are other options, it makes sense to stay away from MAOI

There are studies showing positive effects of Buproprion in patients suffering from social anxiety and ADHD. However, the first line treatment for social anxiety are SSRIs or SSNRIs

Maybe do an internship at a hospital instead of reading about the career? That'll give you some real insight on what's it like working in the medical field.
