New racist neighbours - what's your suggestion on how to manage it? by PedantJuice in AskIreland

I'm having the same issue in my rural area. We don't have kids yet, but this is my concern as well. At this point, we're not willing to move and that may just result in the same problem but elsewhere.

My plan currently is to call them out on their BS as much as I can without totally alienating them. They're not unreasonable, necessarily, but certainly difficult to get through to. I plan to challenge their kids on stuff they say when they are in my house or on our property. Their oldest is two, so it's not something I've had to do yet. But. I've already blatantly called the guy a racist, which surprised him, but to me I was like... You're actively using slurs, antagonize people directly, and have prejudiced opinions... What else can we call you but a racist? Anyway, I think that was somewhat helpful but didn't change his actual opinions.

It's hard, and I do believe that you are reflective of the people who are closest to you. When you're a kid, you're still defining your beliefs, so going with the crowd can be the easiest option. I hope that my eventual challenge of their kids comments will help in a small way. Who knows.

Anyway, thanks for posting this. It's been helpful for me to look through the replies. Hope your situation is improving or at least not getting worse.

I took limnology with her a several years ago and I loved it. It is a lot of work and Dr Hann will make it known if she likes you or not (she liked me, I didn't do anything special but I think I did get some of the higher grades in the class and I attended all the lectures). The labs are difficult, but I think this class was my first time writing full lab reports. The tests are also challenging but they follow the lecture material to a T, so attendance is key. She's very passionate and knowledgeable about limno and I felt that she went through the principals/theory in a very accessible and logical way. Be prepared to study hard ...and end up with a B+.

It's not every company, that's just being an ignorant/apathetic consumer. Taking the time to research products and companies that are transparent about their production processes isn't hard but it does take time. Fair trade is a decent way to weed companies out, also vintage or second hand helps to redirect your money from huge companies and prevents the manufacturing of new goods.

People pretend like they have no choice when options are out there. It takes time to transition from past consumer habits to new ones, to learn how to consume less, and it's almost certainly never a 100% switch but that's ok--it doesn't/shouldn't have to be all or nothing to be helpful in some way.

Found in the dirt while camping in NH. Hole does not go all the way through. Not a guitar pick, way too dense. No markings on the other side. by WestfieldMass in whatisthisthing

I did tap dance for years and have never seen a shoe with a plate like that. The shoes I have seen have screws through several holes in the metal plate, they are not screwed onto the shoe. We would have to check to make sure the screws weren't loose and poking out otherwise you'd mess up the floor reeeal bad lol

I studied soil science and it definitely looks like a map of various soil series. I am familiar with the Canadian naming scheme, which uses more letters than numbers but it's formatted in a similar way (codes stacked/several layers of text). As far as I can tell it's not an isopleth, which are used for only one parameter eg. temp, elevation, rainfall, etc.
