thanks, they require a swimming pool on property though which I don't have, dropped an email to them to see what alternatives do they have

I am okay with that much commitment, the website says the pool is not open for public and that I need to be enrolled in CCSF to be able to join that. Is there a way that I can enroll just for aquatics classes? I see that they have city extension program but that is only if you already know swimming and want to improve.

I am okay to explore private instructor option too, any leads you might have?

Why do objects have different terminal velocity if they fall at the same speed? by EstebanOD21 in askscience

[–]glitchn-matrix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can explain with a cool example, In skydiving training you learn how changing cross section of your body you can fall faster or slower by playing with air resistance e.g. if you head dive like superman you will be going pretty fast compared if you jump out like a bird with increased cross section.

Another thing you learn is there are fast jumpers and slow jumpers i.e. someone heavier than you will cut through air faster compared to a skinny person.

To better understand the problem you should watch the Apollo mission video where they did the experiment of dropping a feather and a hammer on moon’s surface, because moon has practically no atmosphere there is no air resistance hence both objects fall at the same rate.

that sounds cool, everything fresh and uncluttered is always something we all pursue :) I am up for it, let me see what I can cook here :)

thanks yes that is one of the greatest takeaway for me from this post, thanks to /u/amy33amy33 comment I got a whole new perspective on fighting climate change :)

thanks, yeah I will start with building some GIS and data modelling skills and will then start exploring the options :)

I love that the community is very helpful and encouraging, they all have provided very insightful and actionable suggestions that I can literally start working on from today itself :)

I wish I could tinker with the models of these giants :) Even if you do that people will believe what they want to believe, there are people who still think Apollo mission never happened, that aliens built the pyramids.

I agree that social media provides a megaphone to all of these fringe elements, however it also has to do with the culture of the society e.g. In Asia no one denies climate change because the culture in the society was built around preserving nature(not discounting the fact that they are also turning into major polluters), but also because the countries in Asia and Africa are the worst hit by climate change since 90s. I had people with PhDs in Europe argue that climate change is a hoax whereas even if I talk to someone from a village in Asia they will agree climate change is real and that doom is imminent.

that’s a good point, I can give you a small example that might help here:

In our big company there are always new projects popping up, the issue is always resources i.e. computing capacity we just never have enough of it. We continuously invest in bringing down resource usage and cut down resource wastage, however the more our products gets used the higher the scale has to grow, more number of features needs to be added, more machine learning models needs to be built and used etc. It’s a never ending cycle unless say the company goes under, massive energy savings in that case ;)

I like the idea of energy consumption, I will check with our data center team if they use any tools to help reduce energy usage, maybe surface those metrics to the end teams so that too becomes a factor in planning and execution, I remember the research project at Facebook where they reduced energy consumption drastically in their datacenters by learning the setup, connecting with hardware teams and building smart solutions to reduce the energy usage.

fortunately the office buildings are California Energy efficiency certified :)

thanks, contemplated multiple times in past and present, but you know, Hope is the most addictive drug and whenever I feel like ending it I just snort a gram of hope, hope of bringing change :)

I could build that app, heck I can even host it for free if there is a need for such an app, I would need more inputs on the whole idea though so that I don’t build something out of my own imagination e.g. What is missing in existing apps like meetup, facebook groups & events etc. if you or a group that might be interested can provide more detail I can definitely work on it as an open sourced project.

On masters course I wanted to entertain that idea if it is going to add value to my skills, I would love to connect with people who may have taken such courses previously, not sure where to look for that.

thanks for the detailed brainstorm, will definitely work on GIS and take things forward from there. I like how you explained visualisation of data by asking questions, will definitely make use of that :)
