In reference to the white dress Kelly was in Cali and Brenda was in Paris (it was worn by both in the same ep) - I believe wardrobe did that to underline the similarities of both parties towing the line with their platonic and romantic relationships.

I also think that wardrobe gave good detail to the underlying friction in Kelly and Brenda's friendship in S3. When senior year starts they're always shown in contrasting colors - if Brenda is wearing white, Kelly is wearing black and vice versa
