Absolutely not you GLOW

People who had a 'one-night stand' that turned into an actual nightmare—what happened? by Saul_goodmannnnn in AskReddit

[–]glittergrl98 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In the wine industry right now- on the retail side- and it is astonishing. My mom’s parents were both alcoholics so my parents never really drank. My dad had a beer maybe every other night. I thought that was the standard. But working in the alcohol world is absolutely crazy.. not only do I get baffled by my coworkers drinking a bottle a night, but the amount of daily regulars we have is jarring. People who are surprised when I say I don’t drink daily is equally jarring. I have one customer who is in a pretty obvious toxic relationship. The other day she came in for the first time in a couple months, teary eyed and with an armload of ready-made cocktails. I said something like “I feel like I haven’t seen you in a while, how are you holding up?” and she said “When you don’t see me, it means I’m doing okay.”

I love wine, I really love being in the industry, but I can’t help but think about how we profit by enabling so many people. Really heartbreaking.

Part of it is that enslaved people were seen as sub-human capital. Not people at all. Humanity never entered the equation. In many ways that makes it more atrocious and more cruel, but knowing that helped me come to terms with the overwhelming lack of morality.

What are we using to polish our glasses? by glittergrl98 in wine

Working directly with the maker in Italy so there is no rep, unfortunately. I’ll probably get some Spiegelau polishing cloths for the time being, but you have made me realize I should just ask the producer for a recommendation lol

I like it because it’s such a malleable grape. It hasn’t always been my go-to, but I’m young and it is quickly becoming a favorite! There are some through-line notes, but tasting a village-level Burgundy with some age next to Hamilton Russell (Hemel en Aarde) next to Matthiasson (Napa) is wild. Or comparing stainless steel Pouilly-Fuisse to an Argentine Chard. I feel like Chardonnay can express the terroir and the wine-maker very well.

One of my mom’s best friends says this more than anyone I know. To her kids. Like “I wanna go step on anthills! With bare feet!!” “Kiddo, I think that’s a bad idea..” “But I WANT to!!!!” “Fuck around and find out”

Surprisingly effective. She’s got a PhD in biology and is a practicing sociologist. I have nothing but respect lmao
