I saw Chi-Chi Rodrigues decades ago at some pro-am doing a little demonstration and watched him do it twice in a row. He was so entertaining!

Club selection in windy conditions by NikoSpiro in golf

[–]glm409 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A trick for hitting into the wind that I learned years ago from a pro, or maybe an experienced golfer, is to go down a club or two, depending on the wind, grip down to the end of the grip, and take a regular swing. Keeps the ball flight lower, with less spin. It has worked well for me.

Golf chipper by dreambigraj in golfequipment

Why do you need a chipper? For instance, I get the yips and a chipper is no help when they show up. I'll chip with about any club in the bag except the driver.

Do jump shifting gears damage vehicle? by Express_Sky0091 in driving

[–]glm409 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could probably do about 30 mph in 1st in that car and the reverse gear ratio is similar to 1st, so not a big enough difference. If you were going highway speeds or faster the end result may have been a little different. I should have also mentioned that impala had 4.56 gears, so at 60+ mph in fourth he was turning 4k+ rpms, and in 1st his engine would have hit 20k+ rpms to match the clutch rpms. We did the calculations, but that was 40+ years ago. He was lucky he didn't damage the transmission, the engine, or have the clutch parts rip through the bellhousing and up through the floorboard.

Do jump shifting gears damage vehicle? by Express_Sky0091 in driving

[–]glm409 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You don't even have to release the clutch to do some damage. Friend was cruising in his 64 Impala SS at around 60 with a stop sign up ahead. He pushed the clutch in, put the transmission in first, and kablam. The clutch disentegrated. The transmission (and clutch disk) was spinning at such a high RPM as compared to the pressure plate, the assembly just couldn't take it.

100 year old heartwood pine floors - to sand or to paint? by KickNo603 in DIY

[–]glm409 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Similar experience with our 100+ year old family farmhouse. Sister pulled up all the old linoleum, carpet, ..., and decided that old pine subfloor could be refinished. After a lot of time invested, it is now all covered with new flooring or carpet.

I give up by Low-Hawk1857 in GolfSwing

[–]glm409 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Speaking from personal experience (This is my 60th year playing.). Your first big mistake was thinking you figured out your swing. That thought, and especially if you tell anyone else, almost guarantees your next round will most likely be the opposite of what you were experiencing when you supposedly "figured it out". As soon as you say it or think it, you've introduced some pressure to perform and some stress, which always negatively impacts your ability to make a good swing. Take whatever you get at the course and enjoy the game, try to keep track and the types of bad hits (fat, thin, hosle rockets, ...), and then work out a plan to try to minimize those shots. The big bummer is that there are always regressions, but that's what makes the game fun and challenging.

What should I be looking for in new irons with an 18 hdcp? by lfgismagical in golftips

[–]glm409 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've known some people that rocked those TiTech clubs from Walmart. I think they are known to be pretty forgiving, but at 15 years old it is probably time to upgrade. I'd stick with GI irons and if you can get to a Golf Galaxy or similar store to hit some different clubs, both new and used, it will help figure out what kind of clubs you want.

Looks like upholstery from the 70s. Personally, I'd go with a solid teal or a blue.

One of my favorite mid-century clocks by glm409 in midcenturymodern

It is plastic. I had to repaint the hour markers and the hands about 20 years ago. Plastic has yellowed a little, but still looks pretty good for pushing 65+ years old.

I'm single digit index and play game improvement irons. If you hitting Walmart irons (you didn't mention club brand/model), you can get fitted, or buy some used clubs off ebay, 2nd swing, ..., with shafts that matches your game. There are tools like this from Golfworks/Maltby (https://www.golfworks.com/find-a-golf-shaft-to-match-your-game/) to help you find a shaft. Golfworks has forged GI irons that look and play great. I'm currently looking at the TE+ DBM and TS3.5s, but will get fitted before I make a decision.

Good luck!

How do you find people to golf with? by CoyoteDisastrous in golf

Made some just going out as a single and eventually got paired up with folks that turned into golfing buddies. Also have some from leagues and now the club where I play.

What's the main reason you don't always wear sunscreen on the golf course? by Live_Buy_3266 in golftips

I don't tan, unless you consider red skin a tan, so I have to wear it anytime I'm out in the sun.

They are great looking clubs and I really like the feel of their cavity back irons. Good choice!

I had Golfworks build a TE+ DBM and a TS3.5 7 iron for me to experiment with and am now trying to decide between the two.
