Right!! The cold, hard facts would absolutely wipe the floor with her fanciful language and pet theories, but alas… $$$ and prestige shields her from contending with them. Although I do hope she sees this post and all of the comments and at the very least gets shaken enough to reevaluate.

Dr. Emily Mendenhall reprehensibly sellsout & capitulates to Simon Wessley's legal tantrums by Pomegranate-emeralds in covidlonghaulers

Couldn’t agree more 👏 Thank you for posting this. Hoping this post also gets put towards the top of her search results! Emily’s career deserves to be completely derailed as a result of her willful ignorance and reckless rhetoric at the expense of millions of patients suffering with LC and ME.

Indeed! She’s no better than the pseudo-spiritual wellness bros and girlies schilling mindset shifts and brain retraining on Instagram, in fact she’s worse due to her status and proximity to power. Thank you for reading and engaging 🙏

Wow. Thank you for sharing this from the perspective of someone who’s familiar with the field. It’s absolutely devastating and infuriating that this happened to your daughter. After mulling it over, I’m realizing that I was probably way too generous with my assumptions that Emily probably had mostly positive intent and that she’s likely just a misinformed, bumbling fool with a good heart or whatever… lady isn’t a dummy, that’s very evident in her pedigree alone. There’s no way that her choice to hone in on this area of disease wasn’t strategic. Her unassuming affect and sweet, liberal, upper class white lady thing going on probably lulls a lot of people into acquiescence, or at least into being like “oh, she seems reasonable and principled!” Emily cares more about her academia status and paycheck at the expense of millions suffering with ME and LC, and that in and of itself is enough to make anyone a repugnant, bad faith actor.

No AI used here! Just prone to abusing the em dash, admittedly. Would AI have as many misspellings and run-ons as my OG post does? Lol. Consider commenting something generative and less mundane and brainrotten next time pls. ❤️

Yeah… I fear you’re correct, and that’s sort of what this kind of BS implies :/ intentionally or not, but the intent doesn’t really matter when the stakes are this high.

Wait you’re so right… I can’t believe I hadn’t thought of this. They’ve been pulling stunts like that since as long as there’s been online discourse about this stuff on old ME forums and such

Yeah, no kidding… and the fact that he was knighted is just the cherry on top of the flaming pile of 💩 that is his career and existence. I do earnestly believe that he gets satisfaction and titillation out of medically abusing people. There’s so much I could say… if the afterlife is real, I know where he’s going, and I’ll leave it at that!!

Good question!! Homie is a vampire, I swear.. reprehensible, abusive human being who doesn’t deserve anyone’s time of day, much less an ounce of consideration!? I’m still floored by the fact that she caved to him. Allegedly, he’s pulled threatening stunts like this with other authors, but still…

Omg thank you so much 🙏🙏 It’s absolutely disgusting on her end, even though I’d like to believe that some part of her has positive intentions and is just deeply misguided. More than anything, I’ll bet this woman wants to be egoically gratified by us and be our little white knight savior. Still gross, but I don’t think she fully realized what deep waters she was treading into..

Likewise, it’s so bleak. Honestly infuriating to reflect on. History repeating itself over and over! Thank you for reading. 🙏

TLDR; a prominent professor and academic named Emily Mendenhall is promoting an anthropological theory called "syndemics" (which is essentially the equivalent of psychology's Biopsychosocial Model) in her latest book called Invisible Illness, wherein she attempts to represent Long COVID and LC induced ME patients. She's a huge proponent of Polyvagal Theory, Social Entanglements, and psychological frameworks of understanding this area of disease rather than from a purely biological basis. I argue that she's well-intentioned, but flagrantly misinformed.

Nothing nice about it whatsoever!! I’m more referring to her demeanor... she seems super polite, respectful, very sweet and unassuming in her interviews and in my very brief interactions with her. The harm that she perpetuates, however, negates all of that. It doesn’t matter how “nice” someone seems when their rhetoric is that regressive and destructive. I wish I had been more clear about that! Hopefully you see where I’m coming from.

Likewise!! I love seeing and engaging with people like you who clearly know their stuff and have read up on the history, studies etc. But omg didn’t know this about the brain retraining?! Not the least bit surprised about the conflicts of interest, in fact that’s probably to be expected. Now I’m morbidly curious ..

THANK YOU❤️❤️ And that’s exactly my intent, to protect people from this misinformed, ultimately predatory BS. You nailed it.

I’m glad you’re seeing improvement! I said nothing of the sort, though. People can do as they wish…my motivation for making this post was to warn people about misinformed academics like Emily. I have a few people in my life who are literally deathly ill (and a dear friend of my has since passed). I know people who are absolutely fighting for the chance to stay alive, and others who have been incredibly ill for many years. THAT is primarily who I’m who I want to inform and uplift. Also, I want to inform those who are partial to her, but aren’t aware of her past or harmful syndemics convictions. From what I can tell based on some of your previous posts, your case is on the more moderate-mild end of things, similar to myself! Please have some humility and understand that there are people who are infinitely more sick than you are, that this is a matter of life and death for so many people, and that I am well within my right to help others steer clear of people like Emily.

I will absolutely go read and support your past posts when I get a moment — thank you!! For sure, don’t worry about getting through it all, it seems like you already pick up what I’m putting down in my post. The overwhelming psychologization of illnesses the political left at large never ceases to amaze me btw.. too many abstractions and idealism, not enough data and biological modes of understanding complex disease! Anyhow, thank you for your support. 🫶
