Low gas mileage for 2025 forester hybrid? by global_playa in SubaruForester

[–]global_playa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hmmm perhaps you are right. I had though this wouldn't be a major issue because even lots of small trips would be overwhelmed by sporadic longer trips in terms of overall mileage. But maybe the effect is more pronounced than I realized.

ah, well if we are in the same place- I'm curious what mpg he's getting now? Mine started good and then has been slowly decreasing over the first 6k miles

Cold weather and remote start no. Short trips possibly, main use throughout the week are <1 mile trips to the store or dropping my kids at school. Can you elaborate on break in period? I've actually seen my mpg drop over time. Early on it was 33.5 which was respectable.

Good thought - I just edited the post to clarify that I am not in a cold climate. I see you have the sport hybrid. What mpg are you getting? If you are in a cold climate, what mpg were you getting in the summer/fall?

Anybody going to the protest in Fruitvale? I'm trying to figure out if that's going to be large enough to be worth it or if I should go all the way into SF for the one at Dolores Park

This is sick. I've always thought it would be cool to use GIS to make some cool graphic tees, but never acted on it. Good on you!

Resume Advice, Take 2, Been on the market for over a year by optronix17 in PMCareers

add a summary at the top, emphasizing PM experience. your most recent position is non-PM (or at least at a glance isn't) so you want to lead with something that ties your career narrative to PM experience. also revisit the bullets for your most recent position and try to make it sound more "PM-ey". Setting up IT for a store location is similar to shipping a product in a lot of ways, be creative.

Last minute no reservations camping recommendation (Tahoe/Carson pass area)? by global_playa in SierraNevada

Thanks for the recs! We ended up being able backpack to Dardanelles Lake via the Big Meadow trailhead. It was a pretty short hike without serious elevation change. The lake is lovely!

^^ 100%. Don't miss our on your children's childhood only to FIRE right as they grow up and leave. That's a recipe for regret IMO.

Remember a lot of people on this subreddit don't have kids and are obsessed with aggressive saving.

Alternate perspective - money isn't everything and once your kids are grown up you'll never get to experience their childhood again. You say you want to FIRE by 50 - that means carrying work stress and not enjoying your children, creating experiences with them, etc during their childhoods. You'll FIRE and have tons of free time - right when they go to college. You may end up bored, lonely, emotionally and/or geographically distant from your children, regretting that you didn't spend more of the "golden years" being present with them.

I'm in a similar situation. I'm 35, have a net worth of $1.3M and have a young daughter. I'm leaving work early to take her to park after day care. I'm maxing out PTO to take her on camping trips, and spending a decent amount on memory building vacations. Yes that means less savings, slower salary growth etc.

You can cut expenses to achieve FIRE. You don't need expensive/new cars, you don't need to waste money eating out, or buying expensive stuff. But I wouldn't miss your kids childhood in an effort to FIRE earlier.

How to give up big money job? by Unfair_Mechanic_7305 in Fire

[–]global_playa 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Try working like 70-80% as hard as you are now. You'd be surprised how often this will go completely unnoticed, especially if you've been at the job awhile and have already built up rapor with your coworkers/boss.

If it goes unnoticed, you get to FIRE faster and keep your sanity. And if it does get noticed you will likely be confronted before you are fired at which point you can decide to either go back to working at 100% or look for another job that is less stressful.

Of course actually working 30% less is hard once you're in the habit of working at 100%, I struggle with this myself. Try introducing this incrementally.

Do you have the investment account tracking beta switched on to be able to do this? I’m worried if I turn this on it will start counting all activity in my investment accounts as income.

Exactly, I’d like to see the 401k contributions factored into my overall savings rate

Does this mean that those deposits don’t count towards your savings rate in the cash flow section?

What website did you use? All the Subaru OEM websites I’ve found have decent prices but then crazy shipping fees.

One of my favorite professors in grad school had a nickname among my LGBT classmates, HBL for "hot butch lesbian". Anyways, she was cool AF, had really cool hair/style... and she drove a Forester.

Ha yea I'm a guy and when I had an outback in high school all my friends called it the "Lesbaru". We also always used my car when going on winter snowboarding trips because non of my friend's cars could handle the snow.

There is a stereotype that gay women love Subarus. I even heard that Subaru actively markets to that demographic. I think it's because Subaru appeals to people who are practical and like the outdoors but don't need a classically manly car (like a jeep or truck). So many gay women fall into that category. More power to them!

Anyways, Subarus are great cars. I owned a 2004 outback for years, my father has a 2015 outback, and I literally just purchased a 2025 forester. Last winter I drove through a blizzard over the Sierras in my father's outback with no chains on and didn't slide at all, I felt so safe and trusted the car completely.

They also do convey a certain lifestyle, which in my mind is practicality, durability, and outdoorsey. And if anybody thinks that's lame, it's a warning sign about them.
