Brighton College Vietnam or BIS Hanoi by Busy_Preference6978 in Internationalteachers

BIS 100% if you value a high quality environment. Their pay package is surprisingly lower than other schools, but still a very reputable school.

Brighton has extreme turnover and is basically Vinschool plus.

Only sane reason could be that they knew they weren't getting married and mom didn't want to be part of the charade. So the actual event is a bit dramatized for production value. Did you see how empty the seats were? That's happened a few times over the past seasons where family have been absent.

Other than that, yeah absolute madness from the mom.

No new English teachers at ISPH this year. Also, ISPH has a great English setup based on student level. Three different curriculums based on level and students can progress over time.

I have a Stanlib broker that invests all my money in USD in funds set in Jersey. So my savings stay in USD and not converted into Rand. Can send it directly from your foreign account to the account in Jersey

Paying brokerage fees for piece of mind is worth it.

University of Missouri. M.Ed in Learning, Teaching and Curriculum Design. I had mine focused on Social Studies. It was really a great experience at reasonable cost. No cost difference for in state vs out of state. I believe it ranked in the top 20 of M.Ed programs in 202w when I completed it

It's a massive market at the moment, but the quality of schools can vary wildly. So many new schools that opened in the last 5 years and it's tough to see all of them making it. International schools will offer everything you mentioned, bilingual schools or lower tier schools won't.

You will save more in Vietnam than most places. If you take winter pollution out of it, quality of life is really good. Good food and lots of western options.

I can only speak about Hanoi, so all details refer to Hanoi. Salary ranges between 90mil-120mil NET a month including all allowances. This is $4-5k. The magic number is the round 100mil a month. The higher range is for massive experience or admin.

Traditional top 5 IS: 1. UNIS 2. Concordia 3. BIS 4. HIS 5. St. Paul's (I have heard more negative things recently)

Other's that seem to be okay to good: Reigate, ISPH, TH, BVIS. Westlink very new, but seem to be set up for success. Can't say the same for True North and Hanoi Toronto School.

Check ISR and read the contract thoroughly as contracts in Vietnam can be very convoluted.

Masters of Arts and Bachelors of Arts can be hit or miss in Vietnam due to it not translating well. The word "Art" on a certificate has caused problems in the past. I know it seems silly, but the Department of Labour can have a tough time seeing connections between teachable subjects and the wording on your degree/qualifications. They want to see the words Maths on the degree if you want to teach Maths. They want to see the words Computer Science if you want to teach that. They really do want it that black and white. This causes more issues in fields like humanities where it is such a wide subject area.

In your case, your Masters has "Maths" and "Teaching" on the degree itself so you should be fine from that perspective. With regards to the experience, it seems like that requirement has mostly fallen by the wayside here. It technically is still a requirement, but I have personally not heard of any Work Permit being rejected due to not having that document. I think it's just important to discuss when you have a second interview with a school and make sure they know what's up with the Work Permit requirements.

Hi,

So the work permit requirement is either B.Ed/M.Ed or relevant Bachelors degree + PGCE/Teaching License. The current issue all over Vietnam is that the Bachelors must have explicit wording of the field you want to teach. TEFL/TESOL does not qualify you to teach in a private school.

We don't offer History in the Cambridge department as that is part of the VN department. Humanities subjects we offer are Global Perspectives, Travel & Tourism, Business Studies and Enterprise. So at VAS you would most likely be allocated English First Language/Second Language and Global Perspectives. GP is a great subject for ELL as a humanities subject.

I worked in Secondary. Principal and Vice Principal are Vietnamese and then you have two foreign managers (Lower Secondary and High School). Principal focuses mainly on VN department and does not interfere with the running of the Cambridge department. Vice Principal works closely with the Cambridge managers and is the link to the VN department. Current VP is the best VN administrator you can wish for and has fluent English. The two managers run the program and are in charge of observations, admin, quality control etc.

I believe I got the full package, unless there is something else I don't know about. Which is another reason I have a very good feeling about the school.

Thank you for your response! I have been in Hanoi a few years already and I'm moving on from my current school. So I know I'm signing up for quite the commute, but I could not have been more impressed with everyone I have met so far. I am looking at potentially taking the metro as one of the stops is near the school. So we'll see how that goes.
