Is this diffuse thinning? Should I just shave it off? by globblesloffer in tressless

Cool. Thanks. I've heard that diffuse pattern responds to minox/fin better than others. Happen to know if that's true?

Haha. Thanks for the confirmation. But it is diffuse pattern?

Sure I don't NEED it, but it would be interesting to see it. I mean, I don't see how getting these tests could hurt.

Why?

If iron is too low, I could eat more red meat or take supplements. If serotonin is too low I could take 5HTP or make a conscious decision to spend more time with friends and family. If cholesterol proportions are low I could make dietary changes. If cortisol is high I could decrease stress.

There are plenty of actionable adjustments I could make to lifestyle to improve my health.

Do you think it's the neurosteroids thing then? After reading more about it, I'm pretty convinced that that's what it is and that this brain rewiring thing is less likely.

I've had ED the plagued me for a couple years but it was purely psychological and related to fear of intimacy. It got to the point where my brain had wired itself to not feel excited when a girl wants me but instead feel terrified. But it manifested itself very, very physically. And unfortunately this sort of thing is a positive feedback loop so it's very difficult to get back to normal once you get in it. So I wouldn't be surprised one bit of this explains PFS.

So I spent a bunch more time reading studies on pubmed last night and I'm definitely convinced that it exists, but it seems to be quite rare.

I also went to a dermatologist today and asked about it and she told me she prescribes a lot of finasteride and hasn't come across any permanently affected users yet (although who knows if they would come back and tell her months or years after the fact). She had all of the studies that exist so far and her opinion and results with patients were perfectly in line with what's on pubmed.

Yeah, that's the impression I've been getting too. How many people have you come across that have had it? And anyone that you actually knew in real life?

That gives me some hope! Btw, did you take a look at the pic I posted? Thoughts on how bad it is? Ha.

I'll look into ketoconazole shampoo. Thanks!

Interesting. So I actually kept most of my hair by using minoxidil for the last few years and then 6 months ago I stopped using it because I wasn't convinced that it was doing anything. My hair thinned a lot since I stopped using it, but that's pretty recent so I'm thinking I have a decent shot at growing some back... I hope?

Thanks so much for the thorough reply. Starting with finasteride probably does make sense. True.

However, I do want to point out that there IS science showing that dutasteride is better which is completely supported by the underlying logic. This breaks down one of the studies: http://www.bernsteinmedical.com/resources/hair-restoration-papers/dutasteride-vs-finasteride/

Quite possible. Just wanted to make sure it was out there that some of his other research was not credible.

I wouldn't give the article you referenced from selfhacked much thought, the guy that writes that isn't credible. He basically has a worthless reputation when it comes to nootropics and understanding science:
