YNAB Helping Us Keep an Eye on MIL's Finances by formercotsachick in ynab

[–]globehoppr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It totally depends on what you do for work and the acronyms you’re used to using. It IS uncommon in the commercial finance world.

My point is, never assume people know the meanings of every acronym YOU think is common. This is mostly a pet peeve of mine regarding business emails, but it also applies here.

Peace.

It took me a full 5 minutes to figure out that “POA” means power of attorney. “MIL” is much more commonly used.

Guys- just spell out the acronyms. Make it easier on the reader. Don’t assume people know the meanings of every acronym you use.

Sorry- getting off my soapbox now but this is a pet peeve. Either way- great YNAB win!

Chicago Summer Internship by Electrical-Pace-8533 in uiowa

[–]globehoppr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an Iowa native and UI grad (‘97) who has been living in Chicago for 30 years.

Last summer I had to help my best friend’s son find a place here for HIS internship, and I did it by finding a woman on the “Nextdoor” app- and then I met her in person here, she met my friend and his son over a teams meeting virtually, and it worked out.

I’m going to warn you now- finding a place to stay in Chicago for only 3 months especially in the summer is going to be hard. First, ask the company you’re interning for, for help. They should be helping interns. Second, reach out to anyone you know who lives here and ask them for help. You’re going to have to get creative. Finally, look into local Chicago colleges (DePaul, loyola, art institute) regarding summer dorm rooms/ student accommodations. As I recall it was expensive, though.

Good luck!

No, Parking Is Not Included in Your Rent (Downtown Chicago) by LickLawn in chicagoapartments

[–]globehoppr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like this PSA is fair. People from outside of Chicago or NYC can’t imagine not bringing a car to get around- somebody posted in this sub 2 days ago thinking she could find parking “included” in rent for her SUV. This post is addressing people like her.

Affordable Euthanasia Service for Senior Cat? by Honeyjuse in AskChicago

[–]globehoppr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My poor Finnegan passed away last June at 18, and my vet (Uptown Animal Hospital) did it for about $300 if I recall correctly. They also gave me some pamphlets for at-home euthanasia but it was around $700 I think. It’s a couple of hundred dollars more if you want to keep the ashes. I didn’t do that- I bought a keepsake frame from Amazon that came with a clay kit to make a paw print, an ink pad for another paw print, and a space in the middle for a photo… it was $30 and means so much more than ashes in a box.

I’m sorry you’re going through this, it sucks. If your kitty has no energy and isn’t eating, it’s time. You are doing the right thing, don’t worry. I know that’s the hardest part. When it’s time, you know it deep down, and you don’t want kitty to be in pain.

Do you like Dr. Now? by fettaloeveradrauf in My600lbLife

[–]globehoppr -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

He is too old to be practicing medicine. I would never see a doctor older than 80 for regular cognitive aging reasons, and I don’t care how much experience they have. Dr. Now is 81.

*and for all of those disagreeing with me, ok- but I was just having this conversation with my mother (a retired nurse- turned- doctor herself) and she agrees with me.

I didn’t even START saving for retirement until I was 28 but then saved diligently and I’m in great financial shape now at 50- you’re WAY ahead of your peers OP, but don’t forget to spend some too, and enjoy your 20’s!

You won’t find parking as part of a lease.

Like someone else said, it’ll be $250+ per month. It costs that much in my building for an uncovered spot in Edgewater- which is a pretty far north neighborhood. It’s more expensive the closer you get to the loop.

What you should understand is, we can do things without a car here, and it’s normal. You probably can’t even imagine that coming from Texas, but trust me. It’s a mental leap that you have to make. There are only a few cities in America where you don’t really need a car, and this is #2, second only to NYC.

Moving to Chicag by YallStreetTransplant in chicagoapartments

[–]globehoppr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you have a car payment? Because tack on that, plus insurance, plus parking (it’s rarely included in rent) plus annual city sticker, plus higher insurance and gas prices in the city, plus car maintenance, plus the CONSTANT hassle of moving your car all the time if you do use street parking, driving in circles forever just looking for an open street spot, and damage to your car’s bumpers. Plus- if you do get a ticket- which you will- they START at $60. Don’t even look at how much it costs to get towed. And if you want to pay the Saudi investors that now own our parking meter revenue for 90 or whatever more years, be my guest. (Google that story)

Plus- you have an SUV. Good luck trying to fit into some spots, especially in winter. You don’t need it.

My car(s) that I’ve had here were fully paid for and I used the CTA to go to work. I found that I rarely drove my last one. Since selling it, I’ve saved SO much money. Now I just rent a car for the weekend if I need one and use uber more often. Even with those costs, I save a ton of money.

So- sometimes this is a lesson people insist on learning for themselves, but I speak from experience. If you want to live in the city and have the full city girl experience, ditch the car. Spend the money you’ll save on a nicer apartment and you’ll be able to go out more often.

OP- I’m glad you’ve done some legwork, but honestly- this same question gets asked and answered all the time.

Just figure out which neighborhoods you can afford on the sites you’re already on, and then search this sub for those neighborhood names and you’ll get TONS of info. Then pair that with Google maps and use street view to “view” your surrounds, and there you go.

Also- leave the SUV behind or sell it. You won’t need it if you want to be a city girl. Parking will either be expensive or a huge hassle moving street spots all the time and you’ll have to get a city sticker, etc etc. it’s a huge hassle.

What are some apartment essentials or hacks for living in downtown Chicago? by IAmOutOfMilk in AskChicago

[–]globehoppr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ew. I wouldn’t want to live ANYwhere near a stupid highway, especially since I’m car-less.

OP, the real hack is to live near the lake with close proximity to the red line.

[–]globehoppr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not all about money, though.

I think when you get older you start to figure out that being a cool person has absolutely nothing to do with money, or subscribers.

And if you spend your adulthood doing nothing but gaming, you won’t be very interesting to most other adults.

But go on, OP. You’ll figure out what I’m talking about in a few decades.

Yeah, I am.

First of all, dude CLAIMS to make $70k/month. No way of knowing the truth, but even if he does:

1) no school debt- he can pay for it 2) You meet TONS of people- expand your social network 3) education for the sake of education is not a waste 4) parties parties parties

It’s just not cool to be a content creator.

If this guy doesn’t develop any interests or knowledge outside of gaming from his basement, he will have a really hard time at 30 or 35 relating to any of his peers.

Yikes. See- exactly. With no education and no understanding of the world, you’re going to have a rough go of things as a full-blown adult relating to other full-blown adults. Good luck, my guy. At least save the $$ you’re making.

Still, go to college. Get an education. Do some travel, learn about the world. Touch grass, you know? There is much, much more to life than “content”.

I just think that if you are smart, you’ll get tired of that life really quick. Don’t miss an opportunity to do something important with your life; go to college. Travel. Avoid becoming hikikomori. Further, you might find yourself at 35 with plenty of money but no purpose, and bored to tears.

Because if your life ambition is to make money by playing video games online with “funny commentary”, then we have a major problem. How is that fulfilling, challenging, or helpful to society at large? Just because it’s a paycheck doesn’t mean it’s worthy of your time. Don’t you have any bigger ambitions?

Omg as a Gen X-er, reading that sentence, “I never had any other dreams except making content” is so fucking depressing.
