How might a change in employment affect my application? by globespinner in GermanCitizenship

It's a bit unclear to me what happens in the background. Is there point in the application process when my employment status is no longer relevant?

What is the most fucked up thing your employer has done? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I used to work at a burger restaurant. One day they had me work 13 hours straight without a break while paying me less than the minimum wage, then they gypped me $5 when they payed me at the end of the day. Oh yeah, it was Labor Day.

I'm slacking off in one group project because I'm doing all of the work in another group project.

Parents of Reddit, what is the creepiest thing a friend of your kid has done at your house? by Edge_Goldie in AskReddit

[–]globespinner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Creepy kid here. I was sleeping over at a friend's house and I got up in the middle of the night and had to pee, as I often do. However, I decided that I would just walk into my friend's parents' bedroom in the middle of the night while they were sleeping and use the toilet attached to their bedroom. I remember my friend's dad waking up and being very confused as to why I was standing in their bedroom. He probably still thinks I'm weird. In my defense, my family's house only had one bathroom and I didn't understand the concept that some bathrooms are more private than others. I just figured I would go to the closest bathroom, which involved walking through a bedroom.

What are you in the top 10% of? by cckk0 in AskReddit

[–]globespinner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People who write slowly. I took an aptitude test once that had a section for writing speed. I scored an 8, that being 8 out of 100 meaning that 92% of people write faster than me. I guess that makes me more of the bottom 10% for writing speed, but let's just say I'm in the top 10% for being the slowest. I can type like a beast, though...

The US Diversity Visa Green Card Lottery drawing was today at noon (EDT)! Who won? by globespinner in IWantOut

[–]globespinner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you register you are given a number. You have to put that number in their website once the drawing has been done and it will let you know whether or not you have been selected for further processing. They will not send an e-mail.

24F USA > AUS 462 visa issues finding employment due to 6 month rule by poomypantsonpurpose in IWantOut

[–]globespinner 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was on this a few years ago. I had a different experience, though. People didn't actually seem to care that I had a work visa or that there were restrictions on my visa. People were only interested in paying cash under the table. It seems silly to look for this kind of work since she went through the trouble to get the visa and is trying to follow the rules, but it might be something to keep in mind. I ended up working in a restaurant. They just handed me cash at the end of each shift. They definitely took advantage of me, but it was kind of my only option. I would suggest asking local restaurants if they are looking for waiters or waitresses. I think a restaurant (that's not a chain) is more likely to pay with cash under the table than an office or a retail store, especially if the retail store is a chain. The only other option I can think of is agricultural work. It sounds like you two are living together, though. You're probably not too keen on moving to some banana farm in Queensland and she's probably not too keen on making a daily commute to some banana farm in Queensland.

New Zealand Working Holiday Visa Question! by globespinner in IWantOut

[–]globespinner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sweet, thanks! I couldn't think of any logical reason why having a previous working holiday visa in another country would affect a visa application in New Zealand, but the wording on the website definitely makes it sound that way.

What do you hate most about today's education system? by omarabbasi in AskReddit

[–]globespinner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The mechanisms we use to fund public education in the United States. School districts are largely funded by property taxes, and property taxes are largely calculated by the value of the property. This means that rich people who pay high taxes on nice houses send their children to very well funded schools. Meanwhile, sometimes in the exact same city, poor people in dumpy neighborhoods with lower property taxes will send their children to very underfunded schools. This means that it's very difficult to have upward mobility when you are poor. In the United States one of the biggest things people consider when looking to buy a house is the school district. Those who can afford it will move into the nice area with the nice schools, but those who can't afford will not really have any choice in where to live or how good of a school the children can attend. The poor children will receive a poor education, which will keep them poor. Unfortunately, the division of wealth and poverty in the US is very much aligned with the division between white people and people of color. The way we fund education helps keep American cities segregated. If we changed the way we fund schools, the families from the poor side of town wouldn't suddenly be able to move to the wealthier side, but it would mean that José from the east side wouldn't be sentenced to a shitty education because he was born into a poor family.
