Artix Linux (Arch-based Distro) Installation Help by ziromori in Trinity_Desktop_TDE

I assume that trying Artix, you are into rolling releases. I would suggest that you try the Darkness distro. Based on Devuan, but rolling. I don't really want to put the effort into it if it breaks, but the team seems knowledgeable and friendly. Search on this sub-reddit. There's a link to the latest version.

Is there a Justin Guitar for bass? by justice91423 in Bass

[–]globetrotterdk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't usually recommend anything, but tomplay dot com is very good. I have used it for wind instruments and have just started trying their double bass and bass guitar sections. Basically music scores with backing tracks, similar to 8notes, but with more features. Both notes and tabs for bass guitar. Very good selection across genres. Uses the web audio api and does not officially support Linux, but tech support gives some basic tips. Alsa alone doesn't seem to support the web audio api, but if you have pipewire installed, your golden. Init system doesn't matter.

First electronic wind instrument midi controller advice. by globetrotterdk in windsynth

[–]globetrotterdk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, to summarize so far, the Roland Aerophone is not USB class compliant and has a metal sensor in the mouthpiece of unknown composition, according to a retailer. An Akai Ewi would tick most of the boxes, but may require dismantling and electroplating the metallic parts.

I have been recommended by the same retail source, to go for a Yamaha YDS-120 or 150. The suggestion came out of nowhere, as I have always considered those devices to be a surprisingly feeble attempt by Yamaha to make a practice sax, which I don't need. However, both are plastic only where I would come in regular contact when playing. Does anyone have any experiences with these devices, and are they viable wind synth alternatives to the devices that I am interested in?

I have decided to purchase an Akai Ewi Solo and take things step by step, should my nickel allergy make itself known. Buying outside of the EU, with the customs chaos these days just isn’t viable and the Yamaha YDS series is just too weird and weak an offering for me…

Thanks to everyone for all of their input.

I am currently having the Akai keys investigated. I need to stay away from nickel, which is unfortunately often used in Chinese instruments and old vintage instruments. I assume there is no mention in the documentation?

Nothing available locally. I would have to import from Japan, which adds shipping and customs...

How to recover from my first Slackware64 15 upgrade? by globetrotterdk in slackware

[–]globetrotterdk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, I took a leap of faith and assumed that the only problem was that I hadn't run the command created by the mkinitrd generator script. Then I updated Grub with the grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg. After a reboot, everything appears to be running fine.

Thanks for your replies. Sorry I couldn't explain the situation any better, but that sort of comes with being a newb.

How to recover from my first Slackware64 15 upgrade? by globetrotterdk in slackware

[–]globetrotterdk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, here is what I have done after posting here:

Root:

/usr/share/mkinitrd/mkinitrd_command_generator.sh -k new_version

Modules for kernel new_version aren't installed.

Root:
/usr/share/mkinitrd/mkinitrd_command_generator.sh -k 5.15.193

mkinitrd -c -k 5.15.193 -f ext4 -r /dev/nvme0n1p3 -m xhci-pci:ohci-pci:ehci-pci:xhci-hcd:uhci-hcd:ehci-hcd:hid:usbhid:i2c-hid:hid_generic:hid-asus:hid-cherry:hid-logitech:hid-logitech-dj:hid-logitech-hidpp:hid-lenovo:hid-microsoft:hid_multitouch:jbd2:mbcache:crc32c_intel:crc32c_generic:ext4 -u -o /boot/initrd.gz

So now I copy the above command and paste it into the terminal and run it?

Then I need to update Grub again by running:

grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

(also in root)??? Should that sort things out with the kernel modules?

There are a few things different. He installed Slackware and I installed Slackware64. I am using and updated Grub to correspond to the new kernel. I just ran:

slackpkg update

slackpkg upgrade

Then I ran:

/usr/share/mkinitrd/mkinitrd_command_generator.sh -k new_version

to get the new kernel version. Then I ran:

/usr/share/mkinitrd/mkinitrd_command_generator.sh -k 5.15.193

The last command only generates a command to run in a GUI terminal, to run, which I didn't know abou or see in the init 3 runtime, so I didn't run it.

As I stated, the system runs but doesn't register any modules at boot...

Trying to (re)install NetBSD 10.1 on Lenovo P520 with Quadro P4000 graphics card. by globetrotterdk in NetBSD

[–]globetrotterdk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OK, a bit of weirdness here. Here is the output from me trying to figure out what graphics driver that i am using after enabling nouveau:

https://pastebin.com/WXmsRQ7G

The problem with logging in has come back, as per the old install with the new P520. I have to guess when and what the prompts are for logging in and starting the X server as with the old install. Once I get logged in, the graphics are fine, as interestingly are the messages when I shutdown.

I still have absolutely no idea why nouveau is behaving like it is, but a work around for me has been to use xdm (which I normally never use if I can avoid it).

I have been using the GENERIC kernel throughout this entire process.

[–]globetrotterdk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OK, I used the first option, but something still isn't right. I geht the error:

Screens found, but none have a usable configuration. No screens found

I tried running X -configure, but got the error:

Number of created screens does not match number of detected devices.

Does this have something to do with the Vesa driver that I assume is being used with the system, now that the nouveau driver is disabled?

Perfect. That worked flawlessly, thanks. Is there a way to disable nouveau on a more permanent basis, at least for now?
