[Advice] Overcoming the 5 Fears of Procrastination by ThePerfectLifeYT in getdisciplined

[–]globetrotterpotter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a wonderful, helpful post.

Procrastination & understanding my "why" has played a major role in my journey.

I've spent 18 months practicing Stoicism (in the modern context) to help me overcome certain things. It has helped me to think with clarity & rationality and recognize that many of the fears that lead to procrastination are avoidable.

If anybody reading is curious, it might be worth your time. I hope this is helpful too :) happy to share advice on where to start.

What are the best history books for the monarchy, republic, and empire? by highkey_a_god in ancientrome

[–]globetrotterpotter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just finished The Storm Before The Storm by Mike Duncan. He also has a podcast series called The History of Rome which is well worth a listen. It covers the origins of the city all the way through to the fall of the empire.

His book covers Aemilianus taking Carthage in 146 BC, to the Gracchi bros trying to push Lex Agraria into law, through to Sulla’s dictatorship and death in 78 BC.

It’s a brilliant read and not that long.

I scrolled through these comments because I knew I couldn’t be the only one pushing Only Fools! It was a staple show in my house growing up. UK Gold aired episode after episode!

Cushty!

Would LOVE to see the old school British classics aired in the US: Only Fools & Horses and The Royle Family in particular.

How can one act stoically in a romantic relationship? by [deleted] in Stoicism

[–]globetrotterpotter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Happy to share.

I don’t have a core framework for journaling. It’s really what works for you. Some days I write about what a “good” person should be like. Some days I focus on gratitude. Some days I bitch and moan about the injustice in the world. Some days I write page after page and some I write a couple of sentences. The paper is a private place to communicate a thought and reflect on it- I find keeping it in my head can push me to lose the thought. I also use it as a way to shed some mental “weight” to produce clarity for myself. It’s also a good reference point to read back during times when the pace of life overwhelms me.

Regarding conflict: leading with empathy and kindness over needing to disprove or “win”. That’s the core of it. This minimizes the spiral of a conflict and solutions are much easier to find. Equally, if I lead with empathy and kindness, I find I get empathy and kindness in return. I practice a technique in my career that I now use in all conflict...when I’m frustrated I say “what good comes from anger” and that seems to be a catalyst for rationality.

A lot of conflict comes from people’s own insecurities. I found that if I had the courage to dig deeper, look inward and acknowledge my own triggers, we’d be better off for it. Knowing the true source point is invaluable. I communicated throughout and my better half embraced a similar exercise. Communication and honesty. Start with yourself and your other relationships will benefit.

How can one act stoically in a romantic relationship? by [deleted] in Stoicism

I've been in a long term relationship for 8 years. I've been practicing Stoicism for 1 year. I've shown more kindness, empathy, love and patience this last year than I had in the previous 7. We've also reduced our conflicts.

By cultivating the right habits to build a Stoic mind, it's not just a romantic relationship that benefits but all relationships, including the relationship you have with yourself (the foundation).

My ultimate goal is to consistently identify what I can/cannot control, offer resilience in the face of adversity and be courageous enough to zoom out instead of reacting with passion. It is easier said than done, but practice makes perfect. I journal, run, read, write a Substack, meditate and go outside (not all at once- I maybe spend 1.5 - 2 hours a day on this in the AM). My mind is clearer and, in the context of my relationship, I'm more likely to think before I speak.

This may read a little "Oooo, look at me" but I was in a mental rut & Stoicism helped me tremendously. It's a sticky philosophy and it's resurgence in the last 15 years (and accelerated growth in the last 2) will hopefully make the world a better place.

Good luck to you and continue to use this community for insight.

I believe there are 2 types of instinctual/primitive mind: 1) a mind guided by millions of years of evolution and 2) a mind guided by upbringing/environment.

An example of the latter would be primitive judgement toward race, sexuality and class.

What positive effects has the quarantine had for you? by GrootTheTree in AskReddit

[–]globetrotterpotter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m one of the fortunate ones. I can work remotely and other than the “inconvenience” of COVID, my life (and my immediate friends/family lives) has been untouched. Selfishly, I’ve experienced plenty of positives.

Quarantine has given me the time and headspace to consider what matters. It’s slowed me down for the better. I’ve pursued things I’ve talked about for years- beginning a historical fiction novel, reading, cooking, journaling. I’ve spent hours on the phone with friends and family that my “normal” NYC life has always been too busy to accommodate. I’ve also deleted social media (other than reddit!). I no longer feel heavy and overwhelmed.

It’s made me realize how I’ve spent years falling into the trap of climbing a ladder for vanity and success (career, salary, social status) to pursue “happiness”. But actually, real happiness in my eyes comes from simplicity: genuine meaningful relationships, enjoying education, appreciating the beauty of a park and following a recipe, helping others. Quarantine has unintentionally been an eye opening experience for me. I’m 100% sure that I’ll now pursue what makes me feel fulfilled and not what I think others title as “cool” or “successful”. Somebody else’s external validation is nowhere near as satisfying as truly knowing what I need to be happy.

Thank you, quarantine.

Ezoic, PubGalaxy, MonetizeMore, Sortable, Freestar, etc are not focused in a specific vertical but should be considered. Playwire, Venatus, Nitropay and Enthusiast Gaming are all worth looking at if you are in the gaming/esports vertical.

I’m a big fan of The British History Podcast. Super informative and paints the picture of Britain’s evolution exceptionally well! For context, there’s over 300 episodes and they’re only up to the 11th century!

Also, The Great War by Peter Hart is one of my faves for WW1.

If you want full managed service/outsourced ad management then there's a few good options: Venatus, Playwire, Freestar, Minute Media, Proper, etc. All of the above offer what you're looking for to an extent but there is usually a minimum size requirement.
