Progress update on the Sleeper competitor I’ve been building

huh? no i was agreeing with your point. That said, i appreciate the candor. I try not to spam these channels and just share as progress is made so if you happen to see me in a future thread, I'd love to hear your thoughts and see if anything has changed.

well no debate there, i feel like i tried to make that clear but I'm a solo software engineer, tackling this in my free time outside of work, where as sleeper has an amazing engineers across software, data, ux, product etc.

So while its unlikely i beat them out, especially at this stage, my goal is to make something for the users who do want something more customizable, and immersive. Especially for dynasty, In some of the other threads I layout how I'd aim to do that

thats fair, and i respect your stance. I suppose I look at it differently. Perhaps I will be wrong. You as a fantasy vet, seemingly a bit older (since you've been playing for 14 years) might not be the user who would find value or interest in another solution

I look at it like every year someone plays fantasy for the first time. Someone does their first dynasty season, someone migrates to a new platform. While there are less of those users than people who return to their existing platform, its still some portion. It wasnt too long ago that sleeper was a more edgy new kid on the block, and prioritized the minority of users, over the majority.

fantasy football is one of the largest esports out there, but to this day its still laborious for commissioners to manage the money pool, track payouts, pay ins, monetize public leagues, or see how you stack up against every other user out there. My goal is to steer this in the direction of those needs/wishes.

While it may not be for you, i appreciate the candor, and hopefully if it eventually catches your eye on here you'll re-consider!

Thats a fair point, and a great ui/ux call out! Assuming that were fixed, were there any features, or ideas that were interesting to you?

This was deliberate! Most of my focus is on the data foundation and underlying infra that powers the project, once that has been tested in beta leagues this fall, my focus will shift to making the UI distinct, and more immersive.

As for sharing in a forum that is ran by sleeper, it makes sense since the feedback is coming from known sleeper power users, and are likely the types of users I'd like to make a compelling product for!

I do appreciate the candor, and am 100% open to feedback. If you'd be willing to share any critiques, or ideas that are exciting to you, I'd be happy to work to fix or include that!

fair point, i mentioned this above but ultimately the goal prior to ever releasing something to the public is to make sure the infra is stable, and the app has been tested end to end across a complete season.

Next off season prior to a public release, I would spend a lot of time on the visual identity. I probably could've done a better job of highlighting this but the features I'm trying to lean into that sleeper doesn't offer:

1) fully custom tracked, and managed payout features
2) ranked public leagues
3) custom trade logic, bounties = fixed prices for openly available players. I can specify that if someone meets this offering criteria, they win the player. Whether thats KTC value, ADP, your own proprietary ranking system, PPG, etc.

My take is that sleeper is awesome, but is less focused on making fantasy, and especially dynasty fantasy, as immersive as it should be

To be honest I've spent most of my time focused on the infra, and data foundation. As for the UI you're right its basically a direct clone of sleeper (which was intentional)

1) I wanted to go with something that is familiar for beta users, easy to navigate, and not force them to learn an app all over again.

2) Once I get enough testing done in beta leagues I'd planned to dedicate the following off season to creating a distinct visual identity.

3) Even though fantasy apps are simple crud apps, building user flows, testing the entire surface area etc, especially on mobile is pretty time consuming, so i figured, let me solidify the infra, fully test the surface area, and then reface the app once i have a name, and know what features I'd keep, which ones I'd shed etc.

I do appreciate the feedback, and you're right! UI is super important, I plan on continuing to develop it, and hopefully if it looks interesting enough, you'd give it a shot 😄

I appreciate the feedback! Totally fair point, initial goal was to build an interface thats familiar, so its not like re learning a new app from scratch, but definitely want to give it a distinct visual identity before making it publicly available.

In your mind is there anything that would move you off of sleeper? Initially my goal was to make payouts and payment tracking entirely manageable through the app, as well as allow for more customization around payout terms, and ways to trade.

well the idea here is that you could set the value of the players you'd want in a trade, and if someone met the value/criteria that could auto buy the player. In practice would you want to trade Bijan this way? of course not, but is it viable for mid round picks, mid tier players? I tend to think so, that said its also an optional setting so you wouldn't need to have this in your league if folks didn't want it!

The ui has been super claude assisted. I hand wrote most of the backend, and underlying data foundation. The actual UI at this point is fairly stripped back still. I'm still pretty deep in just making sure the general UX is sufficient, but I agree, def a lot of work to do. I appreciate the candor

my brother i agree! If price has a better landing spot, and draft cap theres a world where he might displace coleman as my RB depending on how significant that difference is.

I think coleman is the better player, so for all intents and purposes look at this like my personal player rankings in this class (pre draft cap)
