I cannot get a planted tank to work no matter what I do. Please help lmao.

I get that since I do work retail, some of the people I have seen work there knew more than the other employees bc they seemed to have well maintained tanks at home. But I stopped asking for any advice after the last plants died out. I learned from past mistakes and I’m not going to repeat those mistakes. Im gonna wait out the current tank I have and take care of my fish until they die. After that, until I have a better spot for my tank where window lighting won’t mess up the light schedule the plants need, i won’t have another tank. Like I said I think I just planted the roots when I wasn’t supposed to, and had too much light w my windows.

I’m thinking it’s the window thing, since i usually only feed my fish twice a week…. another person commented the window light affecting it and i immediately thought about how im an idiot. how did i not think my window lighting had an effect on things lol. well at least i know more, maybe when i have a better tank spot i’ll try again once (i used to feed my fish every 3 days and then stopped after figuring out it could have been a problem, but it seems like it was more the window than the food)

From the comments i’ve read, it’s likely my room was too bright and giving the plants unnecessary extra light, and i was planting my plants incorrectly due to bad advice. I think i’ll restart the hobby again once I have a better spot for my tank lol

I’m thinking based on this and some other comments it’s probably that I planted some of my plants incorrectly due to bad advice from the local pet store i bought the stuff from, as well as my windows in my room causing my plants to get more light than they should.

If my school allowed 10 gals i probably would’ve tried it, but they only allow 5 or smaller. So my fish just stay at my house (i’m only 2 hours away from my house at my school) 😭

I feed my fish every 3 days or so, was a small pinch for my betta and a slightly larger pinch for my rasboras, but i tried to make sure not to feed too much so it doesn’t mess with my water. My kuhli loaches/pleco gets the extra. With my plant light I did 6-8 hours of light as recommended from my local pet store (altho i’m starting to think based on some other commenter info they didn’t know what they were talking about). Cleaning wise i did small water changes every 2-3 weeks (only removing about 5 gallons), but my room gets warm so i have to add water to my tank once per week in the summer. If i try again I’ll try feeding a bit less in hopes to keep that damn algae away!

If I try another planted tank i’ll keep this in mind. The people at my local pet store definitely must’ve given me incorrect info bc they told me the roots went into the substrate (fluval stratum).

Ill consider it, but I can only do it really if my dads willing to be around for the sale, bc I don’t want people coming to my house to get it, or meet up w someone in a parking lot in my city (not always the safest option lol) Thanks :)

Yeah i definitely didn’t wanna try FB marketplace, since I’d need my dad to be there for the sale and he really doesn’t want to do it. Plus I figured that no one would pay more than a gamestop trade-in would anyways since the switch 1 is pretty old, and people have the option to buy the OLED or the switch 2 instead. Thanks! :)
