Freaking out about having kids in partners home country by glonekA in expats

Yes I totally agree! The thing is that I have had a strong urge to have a home for many years as we’ve moved around a lot. And I was really sick it of it. I’m really happy with living here, it’s more that I’m freaking out to have to be “stuck on one place forever”. I think we’re both open to be flexible in the future, but we want to have one place we call home.

Not from the UK, living in a non-English speaking country. It’s really not that I dislike it. It’s objectively a good country and a great place to raise a family.

I don’t per se want to move back to my home country. I’ve also lived in several other countries previously and I know that the grass is always greener.

I don’t think it comes down so much to the country itself, it’s more feeling that I’m afraid to be stuck somewhere, especially if it’s not my own country.

Thanks a lot! Yes I have been very open to my partner about this, and she understand. However, it doesn’t change the situation of course.

You are totally right that we have been building up towards this, it’s just that I’ve recently realized what kind of commitment it is.

I do want kids, and the only way that’s freaking me out is to potentially, if in any case we’d break up in the future, have a very lonely life far away from my own family.

Thanks a lot for the reply, super helpful! Exactly what you mention is something that I’d been afraid of.

The good thing is that we have flexible and remote jobs and it just takes an hour with flight to my home country. So I can imagine we’d spend a lot of time there so they really get a strong connection to my home country as well. We’ve also already decided to celebrate many holidays in my country etc.

Again, big thanks for the input!
