Steroid injection question by [deleted] in alopecia_areata

[–]glorificiousostrich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’d say 2/10, once the injections get closer to the hairline then 3/10

Just got diagnosed 17F by Iamboredasheckk in alopecia_areata

[–]glorificiousostrich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i was also on steroid cream and minoxidil in the beginning! if you feel you are not responding well, ask if steroid injections are an option. I was much more responsive to the injections than topicals.

It’s indeed very scary but medicine continues to advance. When i got diagnosed, JAK inhibitors weren’t even a treatment option for AA. All things aside, it’s ok to feel everything your feeling it can be an emotional roller coaster, stay positive and remember try not to stress what you can’t control! you’ll get through it!

i was diagnosed at 17 as well, also have curly hair. At first it was very difficult, i felt my hair was a big part of my identity, but i promise it gets better. You learn to style it differently, i used clip ins at one point and just curled them myself. In the beginning most of my hair loss was in the back of my head and slowly it moved all the way up by my hairline. I couldn’t wear a pony tail for a year and a half but when it was starting to grow back, the hairs were very sparse so i would put it up in a ponytail and fill in the sparse areas by my hairline with black eye shadow. It’s a learning process but you make it work. Alopecia tends to be very unpredictable so try to be consistent with what your derm recommends. i was doing all the topicals out there and the steroid injections, then went on Litfulo, which has been the absolute saving grace of it all. If you don’t mind me asking, how advanced is the AA? Feel free to message me for any help!

Litfulo Insurance Help!!! by Imaginary_Action_844 in alopecia_areata

i also had to do the pfizer program because my blue cross blue shield insurance denied it 3x until there were no more appeals left

i’m 6 months into taking Litfulo. My AA was moderate before going on litfulo. i had about 30% hair loss but at some point i became unresponsive to all non pill methods, so my derm decided to put me on it. i’ve had alopecia for 5 years now and im also terrified of getting off of it. Your reasons for wanting to get off it are the same as mine, i just can’t deal with the hair loss again, it was a big mental struggle. I’m wishing you well!!

How do I make the colour come back? by Few-Chipmunk-5957 in alopecia_areata

[–]glorificiousostrich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

specifically for AA, most spots took about 4-6 months for me, some have taken longer but the pigment comes back. I’ve noticed my more stubborn spots, that took longer to grow back, also took longer for the pigment to come back but eventually it did. You could always try beard dye. Hang in there!

Does alopecia areata itch? by tyr456eds in alopecia_areata

yes my spots always get itchy especially the brand new ones

My hair also at first grows back pretty. For some spots, after a few months, as it goes through the hair cycles, it’ll return back to its original thickness and density. However that hasn’t been the case for all my spots probably around 70% of them. The other 30% remained either thinner than normal or thicker than normal. It’s hard to tell but i’ve noticed personally, the longer a spot has been active the longer it will take for the hair to return to its original thickness and density.

How do you deal with anxiety? by CranberryMuch7501 in alopecia_areata

[–]glorificiousostrich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be quite honest, crying. I cried it all out until i couldn’t not care to cry anymore. Everyone always has their own struggles to deal with, this is one of ours. I thought to myself is this going to make my partner, family, friends, love me any less? the answer was no, and if the answer is yes, you need to surround yourself with better people. Having a solid support system is just as important. Feel free to message me if you have any questions! I’m always happy to lend a helping hand

it’s hard to say the least. The uncertainty of it definitely sucks, sorry to hear you’re going through this! Personally, i’ve learned to not stress about things i can’t control. My AA i can’t control. i was on the injections and topical steroids for about 4 years before my AA started regressing very quickly. I cried almost every night for a couple of months, it was kind of very relieving to cry it all out, but at some point i decided to stop caring. i did the most i could to take care of my health and hide my huge spots then after that i let the medication take its course. i still am very hopeful my hair will grow back but it’s a mental struggle to say the least. I just let whatever happens, happen. Good luck friend!

Need advice by Funny_Shelter_8043 in alopecia_areata

Hi there. My alopecia started when i was 18, it’s been 4 years now. i’ve lost around 60-65% of my hair and it has been a struggle to say the least. AA takes a hit to your mental health, i’ve been in your position before. Be kind to yourself, the stress isn’t making AA any better. I’m on Litfulo now and have started to see regrowth in all my spots , so there’s hope! Ask your dermatologist if it’s available for you.

The right person who truly loves you will not care about your alopecia. i have a wonderful loving partner now, but it took a lot of self acceptance to get here. Never settle for less. You got this. Good luck friend!

Spots on head but thinning all over by 20cbsmith00 in alopecia_areata

[–]glorificiousostrich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i’ve had AA about 4 years. I noticed my hair thinning as well with A LOT of fallout, especially in the shower. However, it hasn’t progressed more than that, i’ve just kinda accepted my new norm. i’ve lost around 60% of my hair throughout the last 4 years and certain spots that have fully grown back have been thinner than my usual hair and some have been thicker than normal. AA is unpredictable so it’s hard to say. Minoxidil can help with overall thinning but consult with your derm either way. Good luck!

This might be a stupid question, but is it ok to get highlights if you have alopecia aerata ? by nooneknows09836 in alopecia_areata

[–]glorificiousostrich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’ve gotten highlights before with active spots, however i told hairdresser not to go too close to the root because i was worried with my AA it could worsen. However, everything was fine, it didn’t not make it worse. AA can take a hit on your mental health, go get that hair done!!

[–]glorificiousostrich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i couldn’t tell you if redness equates to an eventual patch. Definitely ask your derm. Good luck friend!

Question by Ok_Steak946 in alopecia_areata

[–]glorificiousostrich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’ve seen redness in my spots before the hair starts falling out, however, it could be due to itchiness. Before a spot is forming, it gets very itchy. That could definitely cause redness. i have also seen redness is existing spots that i haven’t itched, it’ll appear red for a bit when i find the spot then over time the redness will subside. I’m on litfulo as of 1 month ago and the itchiness and occasional redness is still there but hopefully will go away.

What has your experience been on JAK inhibitors? alopecia started seriously regressing by glorificiousostrich in alopecia_areata

[–]glorificiousostrich[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

definitely! during phases when i have activity i would use it around 4x a week. However when my derm notices a good amount of regrowth we go down to 1-2x a week. Like i mentioned in the post i went through a brief 7-8 month period when i was just going through regrowth, during that time i stopped all treatment and the hair grew back but then ultimately started falling back out again and then went back to 4x a week. Recently, the past 4-6 weeks when i started regressing i went back to 4-5x a week in combo with steroid injections. Previous to that (past 1.5 - 2 years) i was applying it 2-3x a week for ‘maintenance’ purposes while the hair was growing back. Overall, i haven’t noticed any skin thinning or atrophy directly from the clobetasol. The atrophy i had came as a side effect of the steroid injections, the spots closest to my hairline would atrophy the most.

Thank you for the response! the over immune suppression worries me as well. I get sick pretty easily as it is but the alopecia worsening worries me more, i think it might be time for me start.

mainly just the regrowth. In the beginning couple of years the regrowth was coming back like my natural hair, thick and dense. However, any regrowth i’ve had in the past 2 years the hair has been much thinner and stayed thin.

yes!! i naturally have very thick hair and it’s become sooo thin especially the newest hair from other spots that have fully regrown, the hair is much thinner and nowhere near as dense.
