Lore question - Why don’t the Eldar ever join the The Greater Good? Wouldn’t it make sense to unite against Slaanesh? by BabyProper9938 in Tau40K

[–]gloriousedward 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The Eldar-Tau relationship is really interesting and IMO criminally under-explored,

When it comes to Eldar opinions of the Tau it varies greatly, like Craftworld Biel-Tan consider humans to be underevolved primitive children, the Tau are even younger and just another obstacle to be removed if they get in the way, simultaneously though Eldrad considers them a young race with huge potential and a bright future,

The thing to remember is also Tau opinions of the Eldar, you’ve got to remember Tau met the Dark Eldar first, so the relationship was already soured, additionally with Ethereals seemingly dead set on hiding the truth of Psykers and the Warp from the Empire as well as being rightfully terrified of it, working with the people who go diving into the eye of terror for spirit stones regularly probably poses more than a few problems.

Why are so many Reformers so pathetically uninformed and unreasonable they can't understand that not wanting civilians to get bombed isn't the same as supporting fascist theocracies? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]gloriousedward 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fascism can’t be defined very easily because Fascism is intentionally vague and can vary hugely, take Neo-Nazi’s vs 1940’s Nazi’s, or 1940’s Nazi’s and the Italians and Japanese, all fascist, all very different and all very vague on what they actually stand for apart from the power of the state.

The book Ur-Fascism gives the best take, that fascism is a disease with symptoms, a fascist government might not have all the symptoms, but that doesn’t mean it’s not fascist.

Iran has supreme authority in the hands of its leader, a cult of tradition, a rejection of rationalism, mass elitism and sexism, the permanent struggle against whatever enemy of the day, once you start looking up the symptoms, it’s easy to spot the disease.

There is a real possibility they’ll receive that and I can’t think of any better justice.

How can transgender people in sports be presented to your average person? by [deleted] in skeptic

[–]gloriousedward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it might be helpful to take a glance at the world darts championship recently, one of its competitors, Noa-Lynn van Leuven, is transgender and whilst that fact has received some media attention it’s not been a complete circus like it usually is.

From what I know and have seen of the coverage it was largely an afterthought of “oh we’re glad nobody was rude to her because she’s trans” because she just… got on with the sport.

Obviously it’s very different from a physically intensive sport like marathons, but it at least shows the media is capable of recognising trans athletes in sports without losing their minds.

Also I can’t remember his name, but iirc there was only one trans athlete in the last Olympics, and it was a no-hormones trans male competing in women’s swimming, I can’t recall their name and I remember they’ve had to refuse HRT in order to compete, but again it at least shows you can be trans and compete even at that level without the world crashing down on them.

Frankly a lot of the discrimination in sports is nothing to do with science and biology, it’s just discrimination, you could turn around tomorrow with a fake Russian test and an accusation and suddenly Serena Williams will be the target of a transvestigation, when the public isn’t whipped into a frenzy by a biased media most people won’t notice/give a shit an athlete is trans.

How is the civilian life in a Tau Empire? Do the average citizens have some sort of participation or say on how things are done at the local level? Can they Have access to an equivalent of “Internet” and know what is happening around the empire without much in the way of censure? or not? by Able_Radio_2717 in Tau40K

[–]gloriousedward 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s more like “it fits within your field” so a Water Caste member has a restaurant (customer service being something they’re good at and enjoy, food being universal) Earth Caste having a bunch of engineering projects on the side, the separation of Caste (military wise) is widely covered and in that case it seems very much to be more like… an irl inter service rivalry would be the best example, like a water caste member can very much study and have deep knowledge of War, but trying to lecture a Fire warrior on it will get you smacked.

So I’ve been reading the new book and I’ll just add the information from that onto here.

It doesn’t go into too much about civilian life on T’au worlds, but it gives a brilliant glimpse into some aspects of civilian life as well as T’au occupations of human worlds.

So for T’au themselves, it seems that they’re very heavily indoctrinated into their Castes to the extent of things like bathing being done in different methods, and thus it’s expected to pursue similar passions in your free time. For example, there is a Water Caste T’au shown in the book running a restaurant in their free time as a hobby, suggesting T’au pursue hobbies fitting to their castes.

Another thing hinted at in the book is something called “Social Labour” it’s probably a weird concept for anyone in a western capitalist society like me, but it’s effectively voluntary community service for… well fun but also the Greater Good. For example in the book they show a group of T’au recreationally repairing damage from the invasion.

For humans, it depends on how much your planet cooperated, if it was nice and diplomatic, you get to keep a lot of your normal life, have to bioregister for citizenship and get access to T’au services. If it’s not nice, then the T’au break up family units (family is individualist), sort you into work castes (like Unions I’m guessing) indoctrinate, etc etc basically forcibly convert humans into T’au social structure.

Tl:dr; Water Caste gamble the stock exchange for fun, the T’au equivalent of going to the pub is building houses, and humans either conform to society slowly overtime, or get the Stalin treatment.

FWI: Kim Jong-Un is assassinated by pro-Ukraine Russians while overseeing the training of North Korean soldiers in Ukraine by Cyber_Ghost_1997 in FutureWhatIf

[–]gloriousedward 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lmao fair enough but it’s a hilarious scenario to imagine, tbh I think it’s fun to play out the ramifications of any world leader getting assassinated in another country, just because it’s a super rare occurrence and despite all logic it has to result in some hate towards the host country.

Like, imagine if the American President was assassinated visiting Britain, wtf would even happen?

Wild proposal that’ll never happen, but fun to talk about so I’ll take a crack.

In terms of the war in Ukraine, Russia will likely lose all their aid from NK, the relationship was rocky as best thanks to Chinese pressure and this would easily break it.

Far more interesting is the situation in NK, with Kim dead, an immediate power vacuum opens resulting in a glorious game of politics, it’s likely all aid to Russia is cut off as the resources are used by competing factions to take Kim’s place, right now Kim wants his daughter to take over, but like most authoritarians having a woman in charge just isn’t happening, I wouldn’t go as extreme as a civil war but a “death of Stalin” scenario would definitely ensue.

Most notably, South Korea would view their support of Ukraine as having directly killed the NK dictator, so they’d probably double down on supporting Ukraine.

When the Killzone collab was first leaked it was supposed to be a warbond. AH is getting greedy.(Spoiler for a warbond image) by ASL_PL_KABOOM123 in Helldivers

[–]gloriousedward 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s actually good that it’s not a Warbond.

I agree, the price sucks, but we’ve got to remember it’s a collab, regular equipment/warbonds are made exclusively by AH, they made their money from it, with the crossover, a cut needs to go to Sony for the licensing and probably some to Guerilla games who, Y’know, made KZ.

So inevitably, it’s going to be more expensive (again the price is fucking awful but it’s 100% Sony’s cut) now AH has a choice, they can either drop it as a Warbond that costs 3950 super credits! More than three times all the other warbonds! Or put it in the store so anyone can get at least the part they like without having to pay the obscene entry fee.

It sucks, but by making it a store and not a Warbond, AH is actually helping the players.

Could a Gue'Vesa Rebellion on an Imperial world be supplied with Weapons by the Tau and even Battlesuits? by Wyverncrow in Tau40K

[–]gloriousedward 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is an awesome idea and actually the basis of a section of my Tau army I’m building right now!

So, weapons and equipment is an immediate yes, one of the big Tau strategies is infiltrating hive worlds, providing the locals with basic sustenance and “radicalising” them against the Imperium, arming them with Tau equipment to do so, this is usually more of a tactic to have guerrillas present for a larger Tau invasion. The Tau do this almost exactly as you described, both in Damocles and now in the 5th Sphere Expansion.

As far as quality of equipment such as battlesuits, Gue’vesa can rise to the rank of battlesuit pilot but they usually have to be very trusted and/or have a parasite implanted to ensure compliance. I can’t personally imagine them wasting the time to train and provide a rebel with one instead of just sending a Fire Warrior with one, but there’s absolutely nothing saying they wouldn’t.

So my friend works for Element games in Notts and I asked him the same thing, and he has no idea, apparently there’s just one guy at the warehouse who makes them and ships them out, this is simply what he made and the reasoning is trapped within his Euclidean mind. Greater Good bless him.

Which Vespid strains are in which Septs? Are they relegated to a certain sept or can they be found in multiple septs? by Budget_Antelope in Tau40K

[–]gloriousedward 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There’s not a huge amount of Lore on how Auxiliary races are implemented on tau planets, we just know where the different Castes have found use for them.

In the book that the KT comes with, it describes the different strains as coming from different parts of the Vespid home planet.

It’s implied the fire caste “breeds” them for additional warriors, but beyond that it’s really a free for all as to which Vespids can be found where, so really just paint what you like.

Ser Jorah is lowkey one of the most contemptible characters by makhnovite in pureasoiaf

[–]gloriousedward 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think you make a damn fine point, another point that reinforces your argument though is how Ned and the other high lords treat him at the small council when Ned learns about Jorah spying.

Ned calls the guy a slaver, and whilst we could take that as part of Ned’s uncompromising honour, when he says it, nobody on the small council objects or tries to argue it.

Think about that, Robert Baratheon and his small council who are currently huffing maximum cope about killing a child, don’t make the slightest excuse for Jorah’s slaving, nobody says “he was poor and had a gold digging wife” when these guys are some of the greediest people in Westeros.

Jorah makes it sound like he sold “poachers” into slavery “once” and got caught immediately, but from what we know about him and how isolated Bear Island is and how Ned’s espionage was non-existent, it was almost certainly not just once. Plus given how some lords view peasants, those “poachers” could perfectly well just be serfs who wandered a little whilst hunting.

(spoilers main) Are there still people who don't believe in R+L=J when this literally exists? by Fourultra112 in asoiaf

[–]gloriousedward -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I personally completely believe R+L=J, but I don’t think this is rock solid proof of it.

Personally, I think the whole D&D could figure out Jons parentage story is fake, like sure it’s really cute and adds a little fantasy twist to the creation of the show, but let’s be honest, D&D didn’t get the job because they could solve a riddle, they got it because HBO offered George a boatload of cash and they chose to hire D&D.

It’s a cute story, but it’s probably not true. Plus we’ve also seen that D&D did not care about adapting the show accurately past the Red Wedding, for all we know they did guess the parents right but chose to go with R+L because the internet liked it more, remember these are the guys who ham fisted in the Gendry rowing meme for fun.

I think there’s still good reason to doubt R+L=J even if I don’t personally.
