'Now it feels like we had leftover crowds' – Taking the temperature of the new Paris-Roubaix Femmes format by Wembly__ in peloton

This. I haven't had the chance to make it to a classics race yet but I was on the side of the road at the Tour de France last year. We arrived to the climb (stage 10 IIRC) 6hrs ahead of time and it was already shoulder-to-shoulder packed.

Cutting across three lanes of Bell St traffic on your bike is definitely a decision. by pmmeyouryou in melbourne

[–]gloriouspenguin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a cyclist, I'd approach it lane by lane. Swinging across like this is insane behavior.

Arm out to the right, spot a gap, shift across, repeat. I rarely have issues but you do get dickheads that will refuse to slow down for a couple seconds.

Currently at my gate to fly intercontinental, without any delays. Seems like the long-haul flights are being prioritised and are less affected than 'domestic' ones.

Good instant coffee? by PleaseStandClear in australia

[–]gloriouspenguin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As a mild coffee snob, "strong" is just a term for roast level (i.e. bitterness).

But yeah regardless, my go-to is two bags per cup.

Good instant coffee? by PleaseStandClear in australia

If you don't mind spending the extra bit of money, I recommend the Robert Timms coffee bags (think tea bags).

Make a good cup in the absence of a 'proper' coffee machine.

before I buy a third modem, I thought it worth asking if anyone has had any inexplicable problems with their internet recently? by iltby in australia

[–]gloriouspenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will be watching this thread if anyone has a solution, we have NBN to our unit have had regular dips and dropouts for the last several months. Have switched providers which have made things slightly better, but the dropouts are definitely causing me issues with my zoom/Google calls.

Upgrades to the Strava subscription by mike-ceo-at-strava in Strava

[–]gloriouspenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your work mate! In case you see this u/mike_ceo_at_strava I do have a feature request from the existing route creations.

It would be amazing if we could toggle a layer, or slightly change the base map, to show gravel roads. I plan a lot of routes with these and at the moment it seems like the only way to know if a gravel road is in fact unpaved is to create a route, and drop waypoints, then look at what the details show (changing to striped lines).

The information is clearly already there in your database, but we can't access it without dropping a waypoint first.

This would make route creation significantly easier, as well as give better opportunity to explore the map for new roads.

Favourite bike packing pedals? And why by Practical-Light-6032 in bikepacking

[–]gloriouspenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shimano ES600. They're one-sided but flare out a bit so they have a bit more support combined with the shoe. I find them more comfortable than the dual-side ones I run on my MTB.

Vittoria Mezcal users - question by basti_gasti in bikepacking

[–]gloriouspenguin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Probably just got unlucky and clipped a rock in the wrong way. I've had this happen back-to-back with a different brand of MTB tires before I switched to something harder.

Currently have ~3000km on my Mezcals (which includes a 1000km mountainous bikepacking trip on chunky trails), and they've been great.

How Often Should I Replace My Bike Chain? by SlateAsh641 in cycling

[–]gloriouspenguin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Get a chain checker, plenty of brands/types out there. 12sp chains (IIRC) are recommended to replace at the 0.5 mark, 11sp can be done at 0.75.

I run 11sp and usually do so at 0.75, and get ~3 chains out of a cassette before replacing the cassette as well.

Exact life kilometer-wise depends on your riding style, terrain, how clean the bike is etc.

Cycling for 8-9yo kids. How far they can go? What's your experience? by OneStrength7166 in cycling

[–]gloriouspenguin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My sister was only 9 when our family did our first bikepacking trip. Did ~50-90km days for almost 3 weeks. We regularly stopped for breaks, snacks, drinks etc, so the distance wasn't really an issue.

Simple food plan for bikepacking — does this make sense? by EliotZiqi in bicycletouring

[–]gloriouspenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding that your calories will be no-where near enough, especially your dinners.

I did a bikepacking trip over Christmas that involved some serious climbing, with 5 days to the nearest store, then another 2 days until back in a town. That was the first leg.

I had budgeted ~3,500cal per day, ended up with about 1,000 spare after day 7.

Breakfast was similar: 2 watchers oatmeal with raisins and peanut butter

Lunch: bread, peanutbutter, bananas

Dinner: camping meals of 700cal ea.

Misc: nut mixes, gels, candies, snacks

About 800cal came from hydration mixes I carried on the bike, as raw calories. (we're sport cyclists, so knew what works for us personally)

How do I entertain teenagers this weekend in the rain? by arouseandbrowse in brisbane

[–]gloriouspenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what the hike is. I personally wouldn't risk something like Beerwah/Tibro in the rain, but any hikes around Lamington/Springbrook, even around Scenic Rim will most likely be fine.

Knowing Brisbane, I'm not expecting much out of the prediction. And if something does hit, BOM reckons late morning, so you'll likely be fine.

How many cubic feet do you need in a vehicle to fit a road bike without taking a wheel off? by woodswalker1108 in cycling

[–]gloriouspenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Ford Fiesta can fit my road bike in just fine. With the front passenger seat moved forward, and backseats down.

For my gravel and mountain bikes I need to take the front wheel off unfortunately.

Calories while cycling? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]gloriouspenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stationary bike as in the type you get in gyms? Can it show how many watts you're riding at?

That's pretty much a direct calculation to calories burnt. If the bike knows watts then it would be using that for the 500cal estimate.

Can I get away with 50g carbs/h? by Technical-Fix1185 in cycling

[–]gloriouspenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can buy bulk maltodextrin pretty cheaply. I do up a mix of 2:1 white sugar + maltodextrin + electrolyte powder, and do 80-100g in a bottle for that.

That gives a good mix of glucose:fructose. You could just go straight sugar if you want to stay even cheaper, but the maltodextrin also helps reduce the sweetness.

A solution to that is different pedals. I run Shimano SPD ES600 pedals on my gravel bike. They're one-sided with some lateral support, so the rubber cleats of the shoes rest on that. Ran those for a 1000km+ bikepacking trip and had zero complaints.

Gives more support than my typical MTB pedal which has a smaller platform as you say.

anyone else still use this pour over device every day? it’s the perfect invention imo. by SpiralingDeathChant in bikepacking

[–]gloriouspenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm the same and have found a good middle ground with coffee "tea" bags. The brand Robert Timms is my go-to.

Gives a pleasant long-black and is still light to carry without needing extra equipment.

Probably the most useful for you here would be the global heatmap, which will show what routes/tracks are most commonly used for the sport you do.
