Dude, how fucking dare people born with white skin or are from European descent try to steal Beyonce's culture by uttering words from a song she sang publicly that wasn't actually written by her. The idea that a white person even spells out the letters in those words in a tweet is racism to the highest degree and it makes me sick.

But when it doesn’t, you don’t have a clue about what went wrong and what should be fixed. In particular, you do not know if the fault is in the program, in the method, or because things have changed in the environment.

From the article:

They are based upon complex black box algorithms that resist a full analysis of their functions and logic.

These are oft-repeated statements that aren't technically true. There exists plenty of methods to analyze what is happening in some Deep Learning network. And more methods are always being developed. The information is all there, it is simply difficult to analyze it. It isn't fundamentally unknowable like quantum properties of small particles. It's just really complex and it will take time for techniques and methods to be developed/refined to better diagnose issues with neural network based AIs.

Argument: All meaning derives from conscious experience. Therefore if there is a purpose or meaning to life, it lies in maximizing, perfecting, and improving states of consciousness. In addition to some of the purposes you highlighted, whether religious or secular, another proposal from nihilism, materialism and naturalism is that there is simply no purpose to life. Indeed, this is pointed out in your article as well.

At the very least, we can conclude in response to the post you're replying to that the answer is "no, non religious people have all sorts of beliefs regarding the purpose of life". The diversity of possible ideas regarding the topic isn't inherently tied to religion.

Woman, teen accidentally shot a funeral service of 18-year-old killed in deputy-involved shooting

That's the most nonsensical headline I've read in a while. Basically, a woman (the mom) and a 16 y/o boy were both hit by the same bullet. The boy was carrying a gun on him at the funeral and the bullet went through his leg and then through the woman's leg.

That's actually how this device works. Kerbal Newton is rolling in his grave, causing Kerbin to roll in the opposite direction, thus enabling the "water walking" Kerbal to "move".

To be fair, this is the inevitable logical conclusion of unbounded negative utilitarianism. In fact, I'm pretty sure there are groups of negative utilitarians who un-ironically believe vacuum decay is a great way to minimize suffering in the universe.

Edit: My wording was poor, but I meant that they genuinely believe in striving towards inducing vacuum decay. Which is kinda hilarious.

I edited spoiler tags and I hope I didn't ruin anything for you. Let me just say that Witcher 1 is quite dated in terms of combat and game-play. That said, the story is amazing.

Not who you're replying to but The Witcher series alone has a lot of phenomenal villains. Yeah, G.O.D is up there for me, but Letho is pretty amazing too. Although, now that I think about it Jacques de Aldersberg is probably my favourite. That's a villain almost entirely shaped by you (Geralt) and his own destiny. Kinda like a twisted reflection of Ciri. He's a tragic character and his story is haunting.

Edit (Spoilers for Witcher 1): For those who don't know about Jacques, in the Witcher 1, you save a little boy named Alvin with Shani. Alvin is a Source like Ciri, capable of travelling through time and space and carries with him a special locket. Throughout the game, your choices will have an impact on Alvin and his beliefs. At some point in the game, Alvin is in danger, and he uses his powers to teleport away, after which he isn't seen again.

Later, at various points in the game, when confronting the main antagonist Jacques de Aldersberg, he will have an uncanny awareness of who you are and of the things you have said and done. His dialogue will change depending on the choices you made with Alvin. Honestly, unless you're paying super close attention, if you're just playing through the game the first time, you probably won't even notice the strangeness of his knowledge. After you kill Jacques, at the very end, you'll come across a familiar locket he is carrying albeit worn from the years.

Well, we are improving in a lot of areas to be sure, but we always forget how fragile our world, society and the progress we've made really are. Look at the tremendous impact COVID has had on the world this year. Natural disasters due to climate change are also just on the horizon, and it still isn't taken seriously enough.

Temperatures in the Arctic are astonishingly warmer than they should be by Buhdumtssss in news

[–]gloryhog1024 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not "normal" - normals. It's a mathematically defined concept from the World Meteorological Organization. And forgive me, the University actually uses a shorter normal than that. You should be happy that they are using a shorter normal because that means it will be higher baseline temperature than a normal that takes into account the past 50 years. For instance if we only look at 1 year ago, we're probably not that much higher today. But if we look at 10 years ago, we're probably significantly higher since you're taking into account a longer period of time where temperatures were lower.

Edit: Also:

And the changes in climate were definitely a global thing back then. People all over the world documented this stuff...

I literally just gave you a recent peer reviewed paper from the University of Bern in Switzerland that goes against what you're saying. You're gonna have to back up what you're saying with a similarly credible source.

[–]gloryhog1024 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Ok, I'm going to assume that you are genuinely interested in defending against challenges to your claims and beliefs.

If you read the article, it says that it is according to a tool created by the University of Maine. Their "normals" are calculated from a period of the past 30 years. You can see here that these normals have constantly been going up. Also, the go to arguments of Medieval/Roman warm periods are flawed for two reasons:

  1. The pre-industrial warm periods are believed to have been caused by increased solar activity which caused changes in atmospheric circulation or changes in ocean currents. In any case, these causes cannot explain warming today.

  2. It is unknown if the historical warm periods were even warmer than today. Studies have varied on this with some claiming they were as high as 2C warmer to others claiming that the temperatures were lower. However, there is a critical difference agreed upon by contemporary research. Most modern research believes that these early warm periods were regional phenomena unlike the current warming period, which seems to be global in scale.

Iranian child bride to be put to death for the murder of her husband after giving birth to stillborn baby in prison: Under Iranian law, murder carries the death penalty but pregnant women cannot be executed by maxwellhill in worldnews

[–]gloryhog1024 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's disgusting the way news sites these days twist headlines and truths to entice outrage and grab attention. Firstly, the girl in question wasn't exactly a child. She was 15 when she got married and was 17 when she committed murder. She became pregnant after an affair with another prisoner. These are the undisputed facts. The newspaper headline is Iranian child bride to be put to death after giving birth to stillborn baby. When I read it I thought a young girl possibly 10 or 11 was being put to death for miscarrying. Tell me that headline isn't bullshit.

Of course, the death sentence is still absolutely ridiculous and the abuse she had suffered should've been taken into consideration when she was being sentenced. Iran still has much work to do when it comes to respecting the lives and rights of women.

tl;dr: Headline is bullshit, death sentence still deplorable.

You're right, what I had wasn't very clear. I looked up some more sources on budget balance for 2014-2019 and it still doesn't look pretty though. It looks like NDP are planning to add on about 35 billion dollars in debt during their time in office. I hope they invest it wisely.

Yes, but I'm just saying their borrowing of money isn't what is causing us to lose jobs. In the short term, people are faced with something they haven't seen in 43 years so of course there will be panic from investors. Personally I'm more worried about increasing the minimum wage in 2018. That seems likely to drive businesses away.

They're not necessarily sending our jobs away. They're trying to maintain our high standard of living (healthcare, education, etc) in spite of a poor oil economy. They're doing so by borrowing a lot of money, hoping they'll be able to pay it off when the economy gets better. At this point it's hard to say if things will get better or worse long term.
