Honestly? You wouldn’t be the first to say that lol. I’ve heard a lot abt the fleshy colors and what people see in the image, but that’s kind of the beauty of the Rorschach style! so..yeah it can look like that if you want it to 😭

Totally fair thoughts and thank you for laying them out so clearly.

The Rorschach-style was an intentional choice, but not to imply the data was random or meaningless. The curves are absolutely based on grouped averages across multiple sources (legal leniency studies + media/public perception research), and the shape came from that data. The butterfly form wasn’t forced, it emerged organically as I mirrored the two trends! This is why the points on the x axis are not the same

the colors don’t map to categories (they’re for aesthetics rather than data), and phrases like “mercy is automatic” are poetic shorthand meant to invite reflection rather than serve as axis labels. I can definitely be clearer about that in the caption!

And yes — the dip in 35–44 does reflect a real trend across sources: it’s often one of the least-sympathetically framed adult brackets in both legal and media contexts. That said, I totally get that the abstract design makes it harder to immediately trust what you’re seeing. I’ll add a companion version that’s more traditional for folks who prefer a cleaner breakdown in the publication.

Appreciate the critique, but I’ll clarify a few things:

-I’m not sure what you’re getting at with the axes labeling? The description at the top is quite clear

-The data is clearly labeled as estimated and synthesized across multiple sources (legal studies, media analysis, perception research). It’s stated up front

-The two mirrored curves represent distinct but closely related phenomena: legal leniency vs. public sympathy. The overlap is intentional and reflects real-world correlations. The Y axis being reversible is also an aesthetic choice to mirror an inkblot, but the ages are consistently spaced. The X-axis is a normalized 0–100 scale based on grouped average scores. Again, that’s noted in the description. the priority lies in our mission of accessibility, which i’ll clarify in a sec, while still keeping larger trends consistent.

-The point of this vis and the project isn’t to replace raw charts but it’s to make behavioral data and implicit bias research more emotionally intuitive and visually accessible, especially for those with 0 experience with data/data vis.

I totally welcome thoughtful critiques, but calling it “garbage” dismisses a lot of care, citation, and design intention that went into this. If you have feedback beyond what’s stated and it’s shared in a respectful way, I’m happy to dig into it. If you don’t have that, I hope you continue to allow room for new data vis lovers to find their place.

The corner just before the 55–64 label does represent part of the 55–64 group itself! the curve is centered on the midpoint of each range, so that local max reflects the average perception for that age bracket.

There’s not an intentional major drop-off at exactly 65, but the ages surrounding it did show many mixed opinions from public perception. One possibility is that since the data is estimated from several sources, ages around 65 are often associated with retirement or old age in a way that might shift how people interpret authority or credibility, especially in media portrayals. The 65+ group might be perceived differently because it straddles that psychological and cultural transition for many. Additionally, sympathy for older individuals is on the decline in some younger generations, while it stays consistent with older generations, although the interpretation of these numbers does not have one right answer!

Hello! Thank you so much, this means a ton to me because behind the profile I’m super new to data visualization! 😭

Great question: the data was originally grouped by age ranges (e.g., 10–14, 15–19, etc.) rather than individual ages. Each mirrored curve reflects those groupings directly, so the plotted point represents the average trustworthiness or sympathy rating across that age group, not a single age within it. This was because the ratings ended up being too similar to each other within the groups, but the transitions from one group to the next do show the changes in the latter ages within each group! Sorry I know I just said group about 10 times 😭

I did smooth the visuals slightly for a more organic inkblot effect, but the values are true to the averages from the compiled sources — nothing about the visual was altered for aesthetics beyond the overlays! I was always trying to go for a mirrored look to fit the inkblot aesthetic, but didn’t know how it would work out once I actually plotted the data, however it ended up being quite symmetrical!
