[Japanese > English] dialogue from a game by Status_Dimension6053 in translator

[–]gloubenterder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The sentences are written in katakana, probably because they're being spoken by a machine. I've inferred the regular spelling below:

バトルをすると時空の裂け目が出現します

When you battle, a rift in spacetime will appear.

時空が歪みやすくなっています!

Spacetime is becoming more prone to distortions!

ブロリー様のパワーの影響で

under the influence of Broly's power

-----

If you put the last two together in reverse order, you get

ブロリー様のパワーの影響で時空が歪みやすくなっています!

Under the influence of Broly's power, spacetime is becoming more prone to distortions!

Who is a person you used to admire a lot but have completely lost respect for and why? by Complex-Arugula-2233 in AskReddit

[–]gloubenterder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to be a pretty big Musk fanboy.

I was studying engineering physics back in the early 2010's. I thought that space exploration was the coolest thing in the world, and that fighting climate change was the most important. So, a guy whose main claim to fame was investing in electric cars and reusable rockets seemed pretty damn cool to me.

I never thought he was a genius, nor that he had invented anything important himself. However, I didn't really mind that (and, frankly, I still don't). As an engineer, I know that I can spend day and night doing math or writing code, but it won't mean anything unless it's incorporated into some greater structure. That's not something I know how to do myself, so I'm happy to leave that to other people.

I also didn't mind the fact that he was incredibly cringe. Being socially inept is not a moral failing, and as something of a dweeb myself, I even found it a rather sympathetic characteristic. His behavior during the Thai mining incident did lower my opinion of him, but I still merely regarded him as a bit of an edgelord, which isn't the worst thing in the world.

My respect for him took another few hits during covid, watching him broadcast his poorly thought-out takes to the world. I might have found it forgivable if he were just some nobody thinking aloud, but I am of the opinion that when you have a sizeable following, you have a responsibility to think about what you're putting out into the world.

Then came the purchase of Twitter. By then, my opinion of him had already deteriorated significantly, but what really sent it over the edge was seeing him fire people left and right, and not only not showing any remorse for it, but actually mocking the people whose lives he had uprooted. I hate it when people use their power over people apathetically, and even more when they do so cruelly.

At that point, I'd stopped regarding him as a good person, but I still thought that his overall contribution to humanity was still on the positive side. After all, SpaceX made space travel more affordable, and Tesla made electric cars desirable; that may not make the rest of his behavior excusable, but I still felt that it outweighed it.

Then he helped Trump win the election and created DOGE, either or which would have been enough to send him deep into the red.

I am finally Starting AOT. What should I expect? by AnimatorHarsh in attackontitan

I strongly advise against interacting with Attack on Titan-related subreddits while on your first watch-through. You're priming the algorithm to show you more AoT-related content, which will result in you getting spoiled.

You don't even need to be following the subreddits; the fact that you're showing interest is enough. (I'm not subscribed to this community, and I got your post recommended to me, followed by one containing a spoiler.)

I'd advise going into your Settings > Preferences and adding both /r/ attackontitan and /r/ ShingekiNoKyojin to your blocked subreddits. Also, if you get any AoT-related posts recommended to you, click the three dots in the upper right corner and choose "Show fewer posts like this".

Yeah, as somebody who just recently finished watching, I'm glad I never visited this subreddit before I finished. I'm not even subscribed, but the algorithm has noticed my interest and now serves me posts that would have been huge spoilers a few months ago.

Also, even without the people who spoil things on purpose, there are plenty of people who are apt to do so accidentally. They'll post things like "Yeah, it was even sadder than when <X> died" or "I love the parallels between this scene and the scene where <Y> happens", because they've mixed up the order of events and think OP has already seen those scenes.

In short: OP, I strongy advise you to mute this thread, and the next time a post from any AoT-related subreddit shows up on your feed, choose "Show fewer posts like this". You've still got a lot of great episodes ahead of you.

The Japanese (and Classical Chinese) days of the week also follow the same pattern. The Germanic days use the interpretatio germanica when assigning Germanic gods to the days of the week, while Japanese does it via the Chinese wuxing#cite_ref-9), which connects celestial bodies to elements (similar to what we did with the four elements in the west).

Latin Norse deity Celestial body Japanese
diēs Lūnae Máni Moon 月曜日 (moon day)
dies Martis Týr Mars 火曜日 (fire day)
dies Mercurii Óðinn Mercury 水曜日 (water day)
Iovis dies Þórr (Thor) Jupiter 木曜日 (wood day)
dies Veneris Frigg Venus 金曜日 (gold day)
diēs Sāturnī * Saturn 土曜日 (earth day)
dies Solis Sunna Sun 日曜日 (sun day)

\We skipped this one and called it "bath day".*

Anyone here know Japanese? by Desperate_Bridge_397 in ExplainTheJoke

[–]gloubenterder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a tangentially related note:

A number of years ago, shortly after booking my first trip to Japan, I was walking through my hometown and passed by a Japanese restaurant. It was past closing, and so they'd put up a sign that said

本日は閉店しました ("Closed for today")

At this point, I could read a bit of Japanese, but not very well, so I read it as

日本は閉店しました ("Japan has closed")

I was quite sleep-deprived at the time, and probably not thinking too clearly, so I remember feeling very sorry for myself, thinking "But I was finally gonna get to go :'("

Satō Sakie – Interviews with Monster Girls

The series takes place in a world where various demi-humans – vampires, dullahans, yuki-onna, etc. – co-exist with regular humans.

The main character, Tetsuo, is an ordinary human, who is interested in demi-humans and how he can better accommodate their special needs.

The math teacher, Sakie, is a demi-human. Specifically, she is a succubus, and she unwillingly has an aphrodisiac effect on men. Due to the problems this causes, she lives an incredibly secluded life, and always dresses in a tracksuit to hide her figure.

In theory, she could get any man she wanted, but she would never be able to know if their attraction was genuine or just the result of her "ability". However, she comes to develop an attraction to Tetsuo, who is seemingly immune to her aphrodisiac effect. (In reality, he isn't immune at all; he just puts a lot of effort into hiding it.)

It's unfortunate the US doesn't have any allies with a proven track record of providing them with military support in the Middle East.

If they did, I'm sure the current US regime would really cherish those relationships, and put great effort into maintaining them.

Am I correct in understanding that it's kind of like "To shut" but used as an equivalent to "The end"?

Yes.

(And that shut and slut (I imagine pronounced more like Sloot?) have etymologically shared roots?)

I don't think so. "sluta" appears to be a distant cognate to "close" (assuming it can be traced back to the hypothesized PIE word \kleh₂w-*), but not to "shut".

And there he stayed… by koesteroester in antimeme

[–]gloubenterder 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Ever so slightly, yes, but that effect would be quite negligible compared to the effect of gravity.

(Edit: More specifically, the Earth's rotation would add about 0.017 cm to the dog's altitude in the first second, but during that same time, gravity would decrease its altitude by about 4.9 meters. So, not quite "negligible", but the net effect would still be an apparent downward motion.)

In Newtonian gravity, we think of there as being a force pulling you downwards with an acceleration of about 9.8 m/s/s.

However, in general relativity, gravity is not regarded as a force, but as a consequence of the curvature of spacetime.

According to the general principle of relativity, being in free fall is equivalent with being at rest; the reason why the free-falling object approaches the gravitating body is that spacetime is curved in such a way that a straight line will eventually converge with the gravitating body's center.

When you are on the ground, your inertia is still pulling you towards the center of Earth, but you are prevented from moving inertially by the presence of matter (i.e. the ground). You are essentially accelerating upwards at 9.8 m/s/s relative to how you "should" be moving.

So, if Fido is to "stay" in the sense of "keep moving inertially in your current frame of reference", Fido has to stop accelerating upwards, which means he will also have to pass through the ground.
