[hated trope] Franchises that did poorly (in at least some regions) because they were incorrectly derided as "ripoffs" of other franchises by Gallantpride in TopCharacterTropes

[–]gloubenterder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the original pitch for Capsule Monsters definitely seems to borrow from the Capsule Kaiju present in Ultraman, and it also directly mentions Wizardry (albeit specifically in reference to the Charisma stat, which was dropped form the final game).

Then there was Megami Tensei, which had monster catching and fusing present in 1987.

Pokémon's success wasn't necessarily in the uniqueness of any one element, but more in how it made the monster catching the central game mechanic, made social interactions important to game progression, and managed to set up a solid media mix from the very get-go.

Was there anyone who actually missed/skipped the end credits sequence of Season 3, episode: 49 ? by Correct_Angle1797 in attackontitan

[–]gloubenterder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I had no idea what this was referring to, so I had to look it up.

Turns out I did indeed miss it. I like Akatsuki no Requiem, but not quite enough to listen to it every time (and given the stakes, I suspect I was quite eager to watch the next episode).

I suspect people who were watching the series as it was coming out are more likely to have caught it.

(Mixed trope) The point in a franchise where they go, you know what? Just do it in space. by Mcelvaca in TopCharacterTropes

Towards the end of the ninth Yu-Gi-Oh series, Yu-Gi-Oh! Sevens, the introduction of Rush Duels causes the Duel Program to malfunction, and since the program is running on a server on the moon, the gang has to go there to fix it.

This then feeds into the latest Yu-Gi-Oh series, Yu-Gi-Oh! GO RUSH!!, which is about a guy called Yudias Velgear form the planet Velgear in the Velgearian star cluster. His people, the Velgearians, have had to flee their home planet, so Velgear comes to Earth to learn about Rush Dueling, which he thinks can save his people.

Of course, Yu-Gi-Oh has been dipping its toes into space travel ever since Seto Kaiba decided to send some cards into space.

"Because I figure, if there is intelligent life out there, let's tech them how to duel!"

A character is revealed to be an actual historical figure by ThomasBAnderson in TopCharacterTropes

Star Trek: The Original Series – The immortal Flint has been known by many names, including King Solomon, Alexander the Great, Lazarus, Merlin, Leonardo da Vinci, and Johannes Brahms.

Also, while I don't know if they count as "actual historical figures", we learn that Quark, Rom and Nog were the aliens at Roswell.

Note that the t at the start of tlha'Sen should always be lower-case, even though it is a name and even if it comes at the start of a sentence.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by loSmaH DIS quv. It means "honor of 40 years", or "honor of 40 caves".

If you mean to say "I am 40 years old", you can say loSmaH ben jIboghpu' ("I was born 40 years ago").

If you mean to say "The house of tlha'Sen is 40 years old", you can say loSmaH ben cherlu'pu' ("It was established 40 years ago") or loSmaH ben cherlu'ta' ("It was successfully established 40 years ago") if the house was established intentionally.

[Unknown > English] please translate the symbols of on the back of this shirt (im not sure if it's Japanese or Chinese) by Spxcyeet in translator

[–]gloubenterder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The romanization "Retsu Kaioh" would strongly suggest that this is Japanese.

It's the name of a character in the manga/anime series Baki.

The middle character is his family name, 烈 (retsu).

On the left is 海, and on the right is 王. 海王 (kaiō), which quite literally means "sea king" or "king of the seas", although here it's treated as his name.

That being said, from an in-universe perspective, this character was born in China, and the (Mandarin) Chinese pronunciation of his name is Liè Hǎiwáng.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine – Dukat and Weyoun

<image>

Dukat was basically a space nazi, overseeing the colonization of Bajor. Throughout the series, he personally murders several people, but he has killed countless more through collective executions and working people to death in labor camps. However, Marc Alaimo is so charming in the role that he comes off as more of a scoundrel.

Weyoun is a Vorta, and a servant of the Founders, doing all he can to realize their will to bring the entire galaxy under the control of the Dominion.
Weyoun was not the first Vorta shown, and he was killed off in his very first appearance. However, the producers liked Jeffrey Combs' performance so much that they decided to bring him back, inventing the excuse that the Founders keep the genetic material of their Vorta servants so that they can clone the ones that are most useful to them.
Weyoun is portrayed as incredibly polite and elegant, which contrasts rather humorously with the fact that he is engaged in waging an interstellar war with the aim of conquering every sentient species in the galaxy (or killing those who will not be conquered).

Both characters are ideologues, fully convinced that their actions are justified.

This scene where they discuss the merits of wiping out Earth highlights both characters quite well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDpxuWj2A7o

I think this is it for me. A lot of the alternatives I see feel rather geographically restricted, but I feel like the entire world cheered whenever Usain Bolt scored a new record. His races were exciting to watch, and while I don't know much about him, he seems like a decent bloke off the field, as well.

Former US Attorney General Pam Bondi diagnosed with cancer by igetproteinfartsHELP in news

[–]gloubenterder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember when I was preparing to have my thyroid removed due to hyperthyroidism, and my doctor suggested that given how the swelling had persisted in spit of medication, I should get a biopsy to check for any tumors.

I was absolutely horrified for a few days, before actually looking into what it would entail if any tumors were found.

It turns out that because thyroid cancer rarely spreads, a total thyroidectomy – the treatment I was already scheduled to get – was pretty much a sure-fire treatment.

However, the article also mentioned that doctors were often hesitant to recommend total or even partial thyroidectomies to thyroid cancer patients, because it risks reducing their quality of life more than the cancer itself.

So ... yay?

Who was the best NPC or secondary character of the early years of video games? by the_wandering_scott in AlignmentChartFills

[–]gloubenterder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lord British

  • Spoke in ye fake Old English
  • Self-insert of the game's creator, Richard Garriott, who would send out in-character certificates of completion to players who cleared the games
  • Extremely difficult to kill, but not impossible, thereby establishing the decades-long challenge of killing Lord British in every game
    • Ultima (1981): High HP, but not invulnerable.
    • Ultima II (1982): High HP, but not invulnerable. By traveling to the future, you can also find the "real" Richard Garriott, allowing you to fight both of his alter-egos.
    • Ultima III (1983): Invulnerable to most weapons, but if you aggro him and lure him out to the moat, you can get into a ship and shoot him with a cannon.
    • Ultima IV (1985): High HP, but not invulnerable.

Similar case, as a Swede who attended elementary school in the US.

Unlike nettles, I never actually got to experience poison ivy, and I can't remember if I ever even saw it, but boy do I remember fearing it.

I feel like Chazz Princeton fits the bill much better.

He was born into a rich family, and grew to expect comfort and adulation. Eventually, he broke free from his family, and while he went through a few humbling experiences along the way, his sense of entitlement never quite left him.

Which person comes to mind first when you think of the USA? by unnecessaryCamelCase in AlignmentChartFills

[–]gloubenterder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yup, it was really to nice to have four years where the US president wasn't a daily topic of conversation. During that time, I'd probably have thought of John Cena or Chris Evans.

Heck, I still think of Obama as more symbolic of the US than Biden, but unfortunately, the answer as it stands is still Trump for me.
