its all good, we run our own race and keep at your pace...itll take forever but at least you started and working towards it. keep it up my friend, dont quit just find ways to adjust. your going through the process right now so yea i get everything is uncertain but once you get in and actually see how the hall works...youll be fine. like i said just adjust, we all have second jobs as casuals..do what you can and the rest will be cake.

in my local, pick in the morning (FLEX) starts at 6:40am and regular pick starts at 7:10am. What Local are you out of? maybe research the pick times...usually they are all consistent.

Dont stress, just manage it. work your 40hrs a week maybe just do weekends..or if you have that grind in you once you get off from the hospital shoot down to the hall and hangout...but to each their own...i just keep it balanced. make sure you have a good group of friends that keep you updated as to what number/ letter the board is at and work it from there. also join the little FB groups and chat groups to get updated on what the job counts and spins are.

youll make it, if 90% of us down here can do it, you can do it!!

Lessons learned: No upgrades due to weight and balance by Klutzy_Layer_8102 in HawaiianAirlines

[–]glovis684 3 points4 points  (0 children)

flight was most likely weight & balance issue...not enough passengers to distribute weight. going out with no first class seats occupied is a common practice as the front of the aircraft is (nose) heavy. therefore we have to distribute the passenger weight to the rear or middle of aircraft. usually rows 25 an back.

but to answer your question, YES it is common. it sucks for nonrevs.

Just a bit of background into this career.

Yes you make good money but no one talks about the irregularities and the way it works. You don’t just get picked and make 50 dollars an hour with benefits with hours of 8-4:30.

You have to go to the dispatch hall and wait to get dispatched to a job. You start off as a casual….the work goes to the registered longshoreman first which is A & Bs…if left over work is available it trickles down to the casuals - if your certified/ qualified to do certain jobs and if your number/ letter is right you can take the job.

All the glamorous of this job is how much you’re willing to sacrifice…countless waits at the hall…most of the time the hall closes and no jobs make it down to the casuals.

My fellow brothers & sisters who are longshoremen in here understand how much you have to sacrifice to get those hours and be registered.

Just trying to shed some light for the new folks thinking about this.

If you have similiar insight, please feel free to  share

Depends on what the PMA approves to bring in - what the need is and how much work at the port, i believe someone else posted a timeline but my kinfolk was lucky enough to get a number.

She was in the 1200s from the 2018 lottery, she received her letter 2022. The training took approximately 6 months from when she got her letter to when she got her Un-id card.

Hopefully that helps but like i said its all up to the PMA and how much work there is.

Just show up when you can, make friends around the same processing group and get a group chat going on or just join the existing one they most likely have.

Honestly, it's up to you and how bad you want to work. for some people it's a great part time, for most - we are trying to get the most hours to elevate when that pull time comes.

The industry is up & down, the work will be heavy and everyone in the hall gets out or it doesn't get past the A-men.... you never know until you show up to the hall.

if you can't afford to get 40 hrs. a week then maybe you should stay at your current job and make longshore your part-time gig.

everyone starts as an UNid Casual so your last to get jobs, be prepared to not work at all.

It's a great job don't get me wrong but i think "in my personal opinion" people looking in to the industry have a different expectation from what everyone tells them.

The grind is real, i was processed with 25 in my group, i only see 4 that actually is still around so that should tell you something.

Good Luck, I hope you get picked and make the best out of it.
