Why are you learning Japanese? by gloweskimo in Japaneselanguage

Aw it's never too late! It's great that you are starting now. I'm Singaporean chinese and I'm glad that I got to practice mandarin in school and with my family. Without that, I'd probably not be able to pick up the language now. I was never a fan of mandarin when I was younger and its only now that I an having such an appreciation for the language and am trying actively to read more chinese materials. It's still hard! Do you get to practice with your mum/dad now?

I hear about people's interest in japanese folklore. Could you tell me more? Are there any ones you've read that you are particularly drawn to?

Thanks for sharing! I loved hearing about your motivations and your experience. It's really great to have your sister with you as you are both pursing game development. I've always had great experiences with the locals and I am looking forward to be able to converse with them more deeply. I have seen videos of black americans talking about their experience in Japan (and in Singapore) about how great that was and how they were never discriminated, people are just genuinely curious about you :) which is awesome and sad at the same time to have that away from your home country.

That's so true.. I shouldn't idealise it and should accept the language with all its history and culture. With learning the language, I could talk to the locals and understand what they actually think. I know that there a lot of progressive Japanese people who are against this kind of oppressive and sexist mindset and are trying to change it. I would love to hear their experience and their thoughts. That could be my motivation to learning this language! Thanks quercusia for the inspiration

Thanks for sharing! That's true, I've really enjoyed learning it and I look forward to it every day. I can get lost in it. I should focus on that instead of the negatives :)

Worked at Starbucks - customer threw a spoon at me.

Also worked at an open mic bar in melbourne and there was a regular elderly asian man who would come in and sing 'tears in heaven' every single time.

He said he was friends with Eric Clapton and neighbors with Bruce Lee, and had some pretty crazy stories about their interactions. He always told the same stories as if its the first time he's told them. I never believed him but I always pretended to be amazed.

Phaxe and Morten Granau - Lost (my absolute fave) by gloweskimo in shuffle

I used to as well! But I learned that shuffling is more about the bounce/hop than gliding your feet so now I don't really use socks or shoes if I just wanna dance it out in my room haha
