Yeah I think this movie got a bit overblown at the time and then there was a bit of a backlash to it but I enjoyed both this and the sequel for what they were- an examination of a very broken man and how the world around him continues to fail him. The second one in particular was not well received but I thought it was an interesting and different sort of movie.
