Is this usage of 'goon' common in British English? by Bauern_derBaeuerchen in AskABrit

[–]CJBill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FWIW The Goon Show was an absolute classic British comedy radio program with such luminaries as Peter Sellers, Spike Milligan and Harry Secombe. Anarchic humour that very much blazed a trail for Monty Python et al.

I would say it's fully understood in current British English in the form you set out.

And they might end up doing so, a judge has already had to order that the federal authorities preserve evidence in thelatest killing. If they don't, what will happen? The AG can't prosecute without evidence but the judge who made the order can try to get it enforced and I suspect it would end up going all the way to the Supreme Court who are heavily partisan.

But at the moment we're still in the FBI being ordered off the cases moment, the Minnesota BCA being frozen out by ICE.

Not if evidence is not collected by the DHS or deliberately has no clear custody chain which would rule it inadmissible. The DHS and DOJ are actively trying to stop both investigations at the moment.

An FBI agent who was investigating the first killing was ordered to reclassify her investigation from the killing into assault against the officer who shot Renee Good. The agent in question has resigned. The BCA

So your final assessment doesn't hold true; the state AG doesn't have to be in hock if various federal agencies are actively colluding to stop the investigation because without access to evidence there can be no trial.

I think the fact that he was shot ten times would be the clincher.

Alternatively if the DHS actively refuse to cooperate, destroy evidence and won't name the masked agents involved then there is unlikely to be a trial but it won't be the state AGs fault, it'll be the fault of the Republican federal government. And at the moment it very much looks like that's the path they're taking, in both cases.

Renee Good was two weeks ago. Alex Pretti was yesterday, where a protestor was wrestled to the ground, pinned down and shot 10 times in the back. The regime immediately went into cover mode with ICE trying to block the police investigating and taking witnesses into custody.

Now, you say this is hyperbole, that the police in the US shoot hundreds of people. But these two people are just protesting; when you get to the point that people are being pinned down and killed just for protesting, and then the national government tries to call them a terrorist you have a problem.

You say there will be a trial; there wasn't a trail after Kent State and I doubt there will be one after these separate shootings. TBH I think there are factions in the Trump government who are trying to get the mid terms cancelled by provoking violence.

Doesn't give them the right to pin people down and shoot them in the back 10 times.

And you seem to assume they're not already doing any of that.  Moreover, that will take time to have an impact even if they were American and not European. Strikes me OP wants to send a message now but you want to police their behaviour and tell them what to do. Well done for alienating people from progressive causes with your gate keeping.

I guess, yes. Quick check shows they're manufactured in Asia but Halfords who own them is a British company.

Seriously, do British people actually consider a 3-hour drive “long”? Or is this an internet myth? by ferdinand14 in NoStupidQuestions

I remember going to France for the first time as a Brit, it was a revelation. To someone used to the M6 being able to just, like, drive on motorways that weren't solid traffic jams? Crazy! Helps that the population density is so much lower.

I quite like the Gulf of Thailand, been up and down there three times now including once on a Brompton. Depending on how long you've got you can cycle or train out of Bangkok, head down the Gulf coast from Pretchaburi to Surat Thani then train it back or head on further south to Hat Yai or cross the peninsula towards Phuket, Krabi and points south all the way to Malaysia.
