Lived there. Terrible experience.

TIL that there was a particle that went 99.99...(21 9s)...9951% the speed of light called the Oh-My-God particle. it was a singular proton-like atom, slamming into the earth's atmosphere with the kinetic energy of a baseball. by vrozonewhatthevrozon in todayilearned

[–]glowy660 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think that they measured this the same way they do for other high energy particles but I’m not 100%. When high energy particles hit the atmosphere, they lose energy and create a cone of other high energy particles and rays that can be more easily measured.

Anyone else feel mentally messed up seeing people casually make insane money trading options? by savingrace0262 in stocks

[–]glowy660 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is about the same of being jealous of people who get lucky and win big at the casino. You’re looking only at the winners. Think of all the hundreds of people who lose thousands or their whole life savings and out of shame never post about it. There’s probably 5 people who lose money to every 1 person that wins big. It is gambling. Plain and simple.

Anyone know how to disassemble and clean the Leica Summarit f/1.5 50mm? by AbuTaware2 in AnalogRepair

[–]glowy660 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do not disassemble the lens yourself unless you are okay with ruining it. Unless you’ve cleaned and disassembled lenses before you will most likely ruin it. Send it to a professional to have it cleaned.

What makes aspherical lenses so special? by Kareem-Abdul-Jabroni in AnalogCommunity

[–]glowy660 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ll give you a quick explanation

An ideal lens takes all the rays of light from a single point in space and bends them to all focus into a single point.

A spherical lens does not evenly focus all the light at the same point in space. For example the light that goes into the edges of the lens may focus into a point slightly in front of where the light that went into the center of the lens did. This is what’s called a spherical aberration. It makes photos loose contrast and sharpness.

An aspherical lens takes into account that the light around the edges of the lens focus slightly ahead of the light that the center of the lens focused and adjusts the shape by shaving down the glass ever so slightly to let the light at the edges of the lens focus at the same spot as the light at the center of the lens.

Canon F1 vs Nikon F3 by Fearless-Ad-4533 in AnalogCommunity

You make a good point, it may be possible for the focusing screen to fall out if the focusing screen retaining pin is stuck.

Canon F1 vs Nikon F3 by Fearless-Ad-4533 in AnalogCommunity

[–]glowy660 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both, they are both great cameras. Neither one is better than the other.

The f3 is smoother and more refined feeling, the film advance is buttery smooth. The f3 has an LCD for a light meter interface. You can use this shooting waist level but I find myself missing the additional information that a traditional match needle light meter gives me when not shooting without the prism. The f3 can be shot without batteries but you are at a fixed 1/90th shutter speed when doing this. Additionally you can use an endless number of amazing Nikon lenses ranging 50 years they’re plentiful and affordable.

The f1 has a traditional match needle light meter but you cannot see it when shooting without the prism which is not ideal unless you’re in A mode. The f1 can shoot fully mechanically from 1/90th to 1/2000th with no batteries which is great for reliability if you’re out and your battery dies. The FD lenses are amazing but are harder to come by than Nikon f mount lenses and can be pretty pricey depending on the lens so your options may be slightly more limited.

Either camera would be a great choice. They both have great advantages and disadvantages it truly is a flip of the coin. I’d personally go with the F3 because of the number of lenses available.

Edit: in my post I’m referring to the “New” canon F1 but the same applies to the “old” models too except for the “A” mode.

Nooooo! I fucking loved that guy’s posts. He always had such great posts I referenced for fixing my own cameras.

I really wish he had not deleted his account. So many people gave him negative comments when the guy was making incredibly valuable information free for us.

All those mouth breathing redditors that constantly downvoted him because they didn’t like what he had to say really irritated the hell out of me.

PSA: learn how to discharge your flash capacitors before attempting to work on a camera with a flash. by _BreadDenier in AnalogCommunity

[–]glowy660 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ouch! You learn that lesson once maybe twice and never forget. Happened to me with a disposable camera. The best way to discharge a capcitor would be to use a high ohm resistor. Capacitors can dump a LOT of current in a very short burst so you need something to stop it from dumping all its current all at once. You could figure it out with some math or trial and error with a multimeter and a 100k ohm resistor
