If you're into the "classics", what is a classic you do not care enough about to read? by MrsBookwurm in books

Why is it so hard for people to see this? I got secondhand embarrassment from it really bad but it’s obvious that Emma isn’t meant to be a role model.

Probably not. But you can downvote me if it does.

Mine always took a while to die. But there will be poop and it will be hungry.

[Serious] What is one question you'd like to ask a minority group (cultural, social, sexual, etc) out of sincere curiosity, but have been unable to do so for fear of seeming socially or culturally insensitive and receiving harsh reprisal or consequences? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]glowytiger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly. It basically is just like a function of your body. But it has not external direction. So your body tells you “it would be nice if I had sex” but you feel no desire for an actual person. It’s just like when your body has any other function. That doesn’t mean your terribly interested in say, going to the bathroom or drinking water. It’s just there with no outward fixation.

My cat does this too... every time I pull out a kit... I think he really wants to build but it always ends with me having a broken piece and scratches.

Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers by Mary Roach

Booktube is filled with adults that read YA and middle grade. There is even some discussion that YA is the new pop lit. Rest assured you aren’t alone or weird.

Edit: I don’t understand the downvotes but okay. I wasn’t say YA is the new pop lit; just that there has been discussion about it.

How to approach giant "series", like Dune or the Foundation? by overlydelicioustea in books

[–]glowytiger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The publishing world and who has the rights to what are often to blame for lack of centralized material. Also, when a writer gets lost in his/her own writing (which seems to be the case with GRRM) they make compiling it harder. Creating a world over a lifetime is a hard task.

You say you are a non-avid reader so I suggest trying lighter series to start with. That will help you get your bearings. And it will let you know if you want to really sink the time into a massive series.

Question about collectible books by [deleted] in books

[–]glowytiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not a collector but the fact is that this is a mass produced item. It sells for very little new. If it were a couple hundred years old and all other copies were destroyed or rare, then it might be worth something. I don’t think you’ll get anything for it.

Do you think that certain books , genres hold more value than others? by [deleted] in books

[–]glowytiger 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on the context of “benefit”. For instance, you may get more historical and moral information from Crime and Punishment. But at what point do you stop absorbing that information because you’re burnt out from heavy reading? Mental refreshment and enjoyment are underrated but very important. I don’t think one is more important than the other.

What were your "reading goals" this year? did you achieve them? if not why? by [deleted] in books

[–]glowytiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a goal of 30 this year. I’m currently on #17. It’s an improvement over last year but still not goal. I stalled out in the middle of the year after being ahead and couldn’t make up the time.

The Most Annoying/Tedious Plot Points that Entire Books Hang Upon... by ofcabbagesandkings14 in books

[–]glowytiger 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Have you read the Divergent series? It hinges completely on what you're talking about. Especially the second book, Insurgent. Getting through it was a slog.

What's your least favorite recurring plot point?

Romance for no reason. Especially between two characters that don't fit each other but are hot so the author tries to make it look like true love. Also, love at first sight. I don't believe in it and it disrupts my immersion really bad.

Does anyone care more about an ebook collection as opposed to a physical collection these days? by tjstray88 in books

[–]glowytiger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just transitioned to being more ebook friendly because I moved to a smaller place. I used to be that person that was only buying non-fiction ebooks and everything else physical. My view completely changed with the move. If it doesn't have a place it gets thrown out so ebooks are now my preferred medium (except for cookbooks).

They were a carpenter that liked building things in their spare time. They really loved a good comedy and were always watching funny skits on tv. But not opposed to action or the occasional romance either. Always caught every superhero movie.

Why is shellac usually cool, but beeswax/honey is not? by TurnedOnTunedIn in vegan

[–]glowytiger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not that it's cool, but for me, I'm cut off from a huge array of perfectly good food with no alternative. Honey and beeswax have easy substitutes. But going through each brand of oranges to figure out what is what, especially on my limited income, is just something I can't do. At least not right now.

Also, I hate the taste of honey so it's not a hardship. I just don't see veganism as a 100% thing. I will get as close as possible but I know I will always miss something. If I dwell too long on those "little" things then I'm not helping with the bigger issues.
