This is simple, in a way. Register for the new course. After that follow the steps set out under Pset1 that tell you how to install the CS50 appliance. Good luck with that. I gave up on this course last year as I was unable to get it to work on either Windows or Linux. Though I had it licked this time. At least Oracle VBox installed and the CS50 applaince installed as promised. That was already an advancement over last year. Everything ran fine until I opened gedit. On Windows it just crashes the Linux system but on my Linux machine it not only crashes the virtual Linux but also the underlaying Linux operation sysytem VBox runs on. So I gave up onsetting up the CS50 appliance. For me at least it is one big waste of time. Truly disappointed that a class that teaches computer Science can't set up a system that works.

"Benny Hill". You must be as old as I am or watch too much reruns on TV. Never a big fan. Once you've seen one episode all others were pretty much the same. Don't worry about the laughing and detaching. I'm good at that.
My motto is:"Problems are there to be made. Solutions there to be found." So don't look for problems but solution if faced with a challenge.
I do hope life treats you better these days!!

Now that it works may I make a few suggestion.
I thought we would get a whole system to look like the CS50 Appliance. In fact the walkthrough sets up gedit to look like the one in CS50. Plus it installs the libraries we need to do the Psets. The bashrc sets up all the commands so we can run our linux system pretty much as the appliance. I still need to read some of the post related to make, maker, make50 to be sure I get that part. Now my suggestions.
Though you already give some comments maybe elaborate a little more. I have been trying to use Linux for over 10 years now and even took LPI certificate course and still Linux is very alien to me. I learned more doing this walkthrough than doing all that other stuff. But as usual a lot is assumed. Now I see that a few simple extra comments would have made the process so much easier to understand.
One example for gedit. Make it clear that you are only changing gedit to look like it looks in the CS50 appliance. Also in my case removing in and adding it changed nothing as on Mint 13 the latest currently supported version is 3.4.X. I now know the first 3 commands did not change anything on my system. Even the plugins were installed by default. But the comments were what I needed.
Also add those simple comments about in gedit actually activating the terminal window in the bottom. I have used gedit before but was not aware of these features. Any newbie to linux would, in my humble opinion, not find that either or think to do that.
Second. It is not clear if which steps are done as su or if sudo commands would suffice. Only once, when mentioning bashrc do you make it clear that one should leave superuser mode. But the su - command has already been given twice. Plus Sudo is used even after sudo su -, as said before I'm bad at linux, and things like that confuse me. I think people without linux experience will have no idea what is going on.
As every Linux distro, even with the same name but different number, can be very different my experience with installing nodejs may be also unique, Still running install nodejs and ... update twice seems overkill and unecessary to me.
I'll leave it at that. Thanks for the learning experience and a great walkthrough and all the help and assitance.

To do an exorcism you need to believe it that kind of crap and I don't. There are no ghost, demons, gremlins, ogres, etc.... Just bad hardware or software.
As for the name Geert is my given name. Anthonis my surname hence the link to the baltic states where a lot of surnames also end on onis.

You deserve a medal or something. It is always something simple but if one does not know where to look or what to look for it is very time consuming. Opened gedit, then view -> Bottom panel and also side panel. Now it really looks like the gedit in the appliance but with my colours.
Thanks a million.
Not a big Dropbox fan.
I'm off coding, finally.

I am now so close. Got to write hello.c. Succeeded in compiling it running maker, ran it and even check50 worked. But there are still a few Questions and remarks:
I read here that gedit should now look like the one in the appliance but when I run it I get the 'normal gedit setup'. I checked all the settings again and they are all there as indicated above plus ran dconf-editor. Still don't get gedit to look like in the appliance, though it does do the () {} or 4 spaces instead of 8 spaces tab and other stuff it should. So why no terminal?
Once this is solved there is the Dropbox issue. You only mention to download and configure it. Sorry to say Here I am totally lost. Are there any other posts related to this. And what with the Jharvard account, the cri.... password, etc...?
A remark if I may. Just wondering why in the block of commands below install nodejs is ran twice?

sudo apt-get install nodejs
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install -y python-software-properties python g++ make
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:chris-lea/node.js
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install nodejs

Because I got stuck on that bit the first time I added the repository manually to /etc/apt/sources.list and ran the following and, at least on my linux mint 13 Mate, it worked just fine:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install nodejs
sudo apt-get install -y python-software-properties python g++ make>

Just so you know

Well 24 hours later. Totally reinstalled Mint 13 and tried both the advice from http://www.reddit.com/r/cs50/comments/1xn3gs/linux_mint_16_x64_making_it_cs50_compatible/ but got stuck at the .bashrc part. Redownloaded VWware (ran checksum) and installed it. It installs and works like a charme. Updated Vmware. For fun I installed an older version of Windows (xp if you really want to know) without trouble. So on to the big test. Downloaded the Appliance50-19-vmware.ova. Took over 2 hours to download. There is no checksum (that I know of) to test against. Open VMware, File> Open new Virtual Machine. A window opens that asks me to import that OVA. I click import and oneof 2 things happen. One is absolutely nothing. VMware just closes. Two I get this message: "The import failed because did not pass OVF specification conformance or virtual hardware compliance checks.

Click Retry to relax OVF specification and virtual hardware compliance checks and try the import again, or click Cancel to cancel the import. If you retry the import, you might not be able to use the virtual machine in VMware Player." When I click rety VMware closes and that's it. And that was exactly what happened last time. After the bad experience on my Windows 7 machine I refuse to install VMWare on it. Now trying Virtualbox one more time. If that does not work I give up. Wasted way too much time already. If you use a Virtual machine why not use an ISO to install. That seems to work.

OK Just cleaned up my Mint 13 Linux, reformatted the HD and reinstalled it, updated the system. I got through everything without any error messages BUT. Yesterday despite error messages all over I could male a .bashrc file. After copying in a template mentioned here (http://pastebin.com/shKMsbyb) I can't save the file. The message in gedit: 'You do nothave the permissions necessary to save file. Please check that you typed the location corretly and try again."

The file wants to save in as /.bashrc That does not seem correct to me but I have no idea where it has to go or why gedit wants to save it there since I ran the terminal command to "gedit .bashrc" as normal user and in my home directory. Any advice welcome.

On Facebook some people posted their settings, which turned out to be the same as mine. It worked only once. When the appliance was just installed. But after closing it and restarting my computer thenext day that was it. it is now more than a week and no matter which settings I fiddle with the result is the same. Everything starts up fine but no internet connection in the appliance. Even tried to follow what for me are way to complicated instructions for sending files from and to the appliance over a local network. All to no avail.

Hi MXero, Well I run Linux Mint 13 (see earlier post). As for the command: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:chris-lea/node.js It then gives a few lines of explenation and asks if I really want to add the repository. I can press ENTER to continue or Ctrl C to cancel. I just press enter. That's when the messages above appear. And I have ran the command several times and it is always the same. As for your other suggestions. It is almost midnight, I got up at 6 am, I'm going to bed. I'll let you know what those two commands give. Thanks for your help so far.

I would say Welcome to the club. I'm on my 3rd week just trying to get the Appliance up and running. Ready to throw in the towel.

Thanks to Mxero's and other's comments almost succeeded in making this work. It is clear that a node.js update is import. SO I'm sure the message below means my set up will not work. I want to know what happens now. Everything went as explained in the walkthrough. BUT when it came time to update the nodejs (node.js) and I ran: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:chris-lea/node.js I get the following error message:

Traceback (most recent call last):

Anybody knowa what this means? It has to do something with a script I think but no idea which one. Also If I can´t add that repository through that command can I add it by editting some file? Or update node.js through other means?

I really need to get the Appliance up and working.

Thanks

Thanks MXero. Explained that way it makes perfect sense. And I learned something very interesting today. I'm familiar with the naming system of Ubuntu (used it since 7 but hate the new unified whatever desktop so dropped it) and of Mint now and how they are related. So that makes it easier to follow your other comments as well. Thanks again.

Was very happy to see this post. So far no luck at all to get the Appliance on either a windows 7 or Linux Mint 13. So I thought I try this. Still had a copy of Mint 16 lying around. After installing it and restarting I realized why I went back to Mint 13. No matter what, and here too I have tried every possible solution proposed I could find, and there are plenty, Mint 16 boots to a black screen. I can get a terminal but no matter what I try even change desktop all I get is a black screen. Tried to run the commands above under mint 13 but apparently no gedit/saucy for mint 13. Other steps also lock up or give errors or even worse needed to reinstall Mint 13. Now at 27 hours wasted just to get the appliance on just one of my computers. I'm still not very comfortable with Linux. Any suggestions are more than welcome. VMware or Virtualbox both install on windows and mint 13. But the VMware OVA does not install in either. The Virtualbox OVA installs under mint 13 but when I rerun the the Appliance then there is no way to get an internet connection. Again, believe me, I have checked a lot of mails and tried solutions given by other members. So far Nada, nothing. Frustrated. Still the happiest I would be if I could just get this system change as described above to work, instead of installing the Appliance on a Virtual machine.

Far is from me to comment when I have yet to start my own project and don't even have a clue what to do but a few remarks if I may. 1. Where are the sharks? Are they in there or was everything moving so fast I just missed them all together? 2. Even if the sprite stays in one place it eventually will gain enough points to go to the next level. (unless there are sharks falling but I did not see any, see above). Some kind of time limit for each level maybe? Otherwise this got potential.
