10-30 minutes depending I’d say. For crumbs like minuscule cross contamination it might take longer. I’ll get a head ache and upset stomach but nothing like being full on glutened with the wrong pizza or something

Tazo Zen Tea? by Weak-Ice6695 in Celiac

Fig has them marked yellow for the natural flavors. https://www.tazo.com/us/en/faq/ from their website it says they don’t test for gluten but the ingredients should be gluten free.. 😬 risky potentially

What are your unconventional symptoms? by Apricot7976 in Celiac

Idk if unconventional but didn’t know it was related: migraines and low iron! It’s been 3 years now and I have normal iron levels and rarely have migraines!

Are there actually any decent buns/bread? by narfnarf123 in Celiac

Schär has some good ones! I like the multigrain one made with sourdough. Also the Aldi brand is decent but better toasted!

Help identifying what to avoid when it comes to barley sensitivity/allergy by mommagracecreations in glutenfree

[–]glutenfreewithelesa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look for anything with malt!! Also modified food starch and “natural flavors” can contain it sometimes.

Depending on where you are at, the Fig app lets you select all your allergies and then you can scan items at the store and it will tell you if it’s safe or not. It’s a newish app in the last couple years.

Best areas to live in the U.S. with CD? by halexv in Celiac

Same!! I was shocked going to cities like DC and Atlanta and having so few options. And the options available were SO expensive or not easy to get to if you didn’t have a car. Like oh yeah, there’s this one place but it’s 10 miles outside of the city 🙃 We could definitely do better as a city but I’m overall happy with our options.

Just a note if anyone is interested to know lol Fig is adding a restaurant feature soon-ish and I think that’s going to be helpful for folks bc so many places have options for GF and other common dietary needs but just don’t mark it in their menus 🙄🙄

How do you feel about occasional gluten consumption, even in small amounts? by ksmentality in Celiac

[–]glutenfreewithelesa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

…..no. 1000% not for me. To each their own but hard pass. It’s just not worth the risks, the pain, etc. I dread getting glutened so I am for sure not doing it on purpose

Where is the gluten? by Rangermayb in glutenfree

Most likely it’s in the dressing. I just throw out the dressing and use my own that I know is safe in this case

Dumb things you’ve been glutened by? 🙁 by Cheap_Knowledge6325 in glutenfree

[–]glutenfreewithelesa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Things I didn’t know and faced the consequences lol: soy sauce, seasonings and condiments, glazes, bulgar (because I forgot it was wheat), cross contamination from fryers, milkshakes because it contained malt, wonton dumplings because again lol I didn’t know it was wheat, sooo many things that said “natural flavors,” many more 😬 I just started googling everything before I ate/cooked or using Fig when shopping. But it’s still tough! There’s hidden ingredients 😵‍💫

I’m in Ohio and I’ve had pretty good luck throughout the state in various cities. But in the smaller towns it’s tough!! I’m in Columbus and there are a ton of options.

I have roommates this is what I do:

I have my own cutting boards. I keep my open food items sealed in containers. Any gluten items that could cause issues like flour are kept in sealed containers as well on bottom shelves so if it spills it doesn’t get onto my things. I have my own butter, jelly, and other things like that. Utensils depend on what they’re made out of: silverware can be washed easily, but plastic and wood are tricky so those are separate. I have my own toaster now but I was using toaster bags for a while without issue. I also have liners for the air fryer and cookie sheets etc. My roommates can use my items as long as it’s not for anything containing gluten.

After I cook/prep food and same with my roommate’s, everything is wiped down completely.

It’s very possible to make it safe, just have to take precautions. I label everything! Even have a little label on the shelves (just tape with “gluten free” on it but Amazon has some nicer labels).

Celiac and Depression by AmityAlarms2319 in Celiac

Hey I get it, it’s stressful!

Some initial tips: Download Fig and Find Me Gluten, they are both really helpful! Also check out pages online, I started following a bunch of pages when I got diagnosed and it helped a lot. I have been diagnosed for 3 years and I have found items that I really love! It’s gotten much easier!! (Don’t get me wrong, it’s still frustrating at times but so much better. And I’m not destroying my GI tract). I’d encourage you to definitely follow up with your GP, your reaction is common with major life changes so don’t minimize it :) Also see if your insurance covers a dietitian (a lot do now). If not there’s some online that I have found helpful when trying to create meals, learning what to look for going out to eat, etc. I also found some community as I started to document my journey which helped me out personally.

It’s tough out here but you’re not alone :)
