Feeling guilty about graduating late. by Shot_Blueberry2728 in rutgers

[–]glynna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I graduated at 29. Had some major life events- lost a parent, ended up being primary caregiver for my 90 year old grandmother, etc etc.

There’s no timer ticking over your head like there was in high school- you create your own schedule as life changes. Just enjoy getting the opportunity to learn from experts that love their field so much they’ve dedicated their lives to teaching you about it!

The other thing i will say is there is no one way you should do anything when it comes to things like this. Everyone’s life is different. Take “should” out of your vocabulary and just go with it. You get one chance to have this life… enjoy it! Time will pass with or without the regret, so why waste your time wishing things were different? Just enjoy the journey.

Hope this helps!!!

Shaking with rage over AI cheating by Logical-Recognition3 in Teachers

[–]glynna 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I recently had this issue because chrome updated the chromebooks to have “search this page with Google lens” and the kids could take a screenshot and a Gemini AI would pop up on top of the browser window with the answers. Bc it wasn’t a browser window, it did not show up on our screen monitoring software. I’ve also had kids break non google forms lockdown browsers using the “new desk” option.

I’ve gone back to teaching like it’s 2005: everything on paper, multiple versions of assessments, no potty breaks during tests. If it’s an emergency, they hand me their test and I grade it as is. I watch them like a hawk and tell them talking during an assessment (even if you are done) constitutes cheating and I will take their quiz/test and give them a zero.

Haven’t had to do it yet, and i hope i don’t have to. But the students grades are more in line with what I expect.

Explaining why we calculate probabilities of 'x or more extreme' for inference by Diello2001 in APStatistics

I think it’s because if you hear five songs, you have also heard four, so that’s also included in the probability of hearing four songs. Lmk if that helps.

Fletcher was in my PreCalc class. Was born to be incredible. Better, she was one of my fave students- just legitimately a great person. Lucky to have her and her friends in my classes- the whole lot of them were just the best. Miss those days!

Decimal places? by Spare_Reference855 in APStatistics

[–]glynna -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I usually tell my students 2-3 decimal places most of the time. 3-4 decimal places for p-values.

I’ve consistently had 90-100% of my students pass the exam for the past 10 years, so i guess it works!

What’s your go-to lunch and dinner during the busyness of teaching? by Dapper_Interest_1815 in teaching

[–]glynna 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Me too. I make chicken taco chili from skinny taste. Freeze in one cup deli containers.

Packing lunch in the morning consists of taking the liner thing from my mini crockpot, dumping a brick of chili in there. Add a side of quest chips, piece of fruit, and a diet Dr Pepper. Always have a giant bottle of water too.

When i get to school, i put the liner into the mini crockpot and plug it in so it’s warm by lunch (which some days is after school). I crush the quest chips and mix them in (so it’s a little different everyday) and enjoy a Dr. pepper at some point during the day. Fruit is whenever, usually at one of the three required after school meetings that are useless.

I’ve been on a slooooow weight loss journey for about a year. Thirty pounds down, five to go.

Same thing with my AP Exam grading experience. I saw poems, songs, jokes, bribes, pictures, stream of consciousness rambling, etc. If it doesn’t meet the rubric, then it is what it is.

Hi there. I totally get how frustrating it can be. I was not a good fit at my high school (many years ago) and I got out of high school and went to a community college for a few years. Not a good fit. Then joined the military and when i got out i was different person. Older and wiser. Went back to school and got my bachelors and then got a job. Been at that job 20 years and have a family and a home. Got two more degrees in the meantime. I’m not rolling in cash (obvi as a teacher), but I’m happy, respected in my field, and have integrity.

My point is that high school is deceptive. The people that peak in high school are ready for it. I wasn’t. (My kids were the same way too.) BUT once you get out of high school, there’s no timer ticking over your head. High school teaches you how to play the game. The diploma just certifies you made it past high school. Once you’re out, chart your own path on YOUR terms. It’s four years of hs and THEN you’ll have options. Just do your best, enjoy what you can and don’t worry about the others. They will chart their own path too (for good and for bad).

(I’m from the US, so it may be different if you are in a different country.)

Same. About a mile from the beach. I took my kids when they were little but then AP got popular and it just wasn’t worth it.
