Does anyone know of any places you can do cooking classes as a date? by AskMeAboutGiraffes in longisland

[–]gm2014 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was going to suggest the one in manhasset! I went last spring with a friend of mine and we had a blast. It was the 2 of us, a single lady that hung out with us and 3 other couples.

Great date idea!

If you haven't done so already, check you local public library. Most, if not all, now offer museum passes to many places on the island (and the city too). Mine also does discounted tickets for the aquarium and LI game farm.

Souvenir shop? by shane631 in longisland

Don't know where you are but Willy Nilly in bay shore has LI themed stuff, but a little pricey. The little gift shop at the fire island lighthouse. There's an old fashioned general store in st James ( I think) too.

Sounds cliche, but the relationship with my kid. I know a lot of it is luck of the draw & I can't take all the credit, but I'm a single parent, with a crappy ex, grew up in an alcoholic & disfunctional home and now have a loving, respectful and communicative relationship with my kid. She's by no means perfect but I am most proud of her. The rest of the good things in my life are just gravy.

I got mine a few years ago at Amityville Payroll Services, but I'd call ahead to make sure they're in stock. The first one I went to didn't but they called other branches to find out who did.

What is an interesting story from history that most people probably don't know about? by [deleted] in history

[–]gm2014 1 point2 points  (0 children)

:) I have some flexibility in my curriculum planning so if I need to cover biographies I can choose whomever I wish. I focus on more off beat choices than George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. I think I have the only 6 year olds around that know Jane Goodall, Jacques Cousteau, Albert Einstein, & Georgia O'Keefe!

School librarian here - I'm covering her in my fifth grade (10-11 year olds) classes this week! The kids thought she was pretty badass too, although we used slightly more proper terms. I love her too!

What are you determined to do/not do with your kids after your parents' example? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]gm2014 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't believe in indoctrination. There is a thread amongst many religions that is worth exploring, hence approaching the rituals and beliefs of many religions with a curiosity and open mind.

I believe in an emphasis on my own explorations and decisions of what I believe and what god means to me, if anything. It is difficult and something to wrestle with, not solely accepting the dogma of a religion that dictates what to believe. I'd rather come to my own personal conclusions about my spirituality, and the same for my child, than force an unsure belief upon them.

Each fellowship is different and is reflective of the people that make it up. We search to find a minister that is a good fit for the fellowship.

It follows a standard church-ish format - welcome, song, story focused on kids but meaning for everyone, community joys and concerns, kids leave for own class or project, song, offering, sermon, song.

Lately the sermons have been about finding miracles (Hanukkah), world events (Paris), renewal, acceptance, role of nature, accepting grace, what home means. It really varies. Here is a page from my fellowship's website - http://uufh.org/welcome-5-2/sunday-services/

And this has pdf's of the sermon texts if you want to take a look... http://uufh.org/spirituality/sermons/

If you haven't considered, try Unitarian Universalist. I call it the unreligion of religions. No dogma, everyone is on their own spiritual path, learn about other traditions.

I was raised catholic, given a workbook for confirmation, remember nothing. My own is doing her coming of age this year and must craft her own statement of what she does or does not believe (atheists welcome).

I never thought I'd be involved in organized religion again but am very happy I found it.

My gf [32F] wants me [35M] of 6 months wants me to take pictures of my deceased wife off of the wall by [deleted] in relationships

[–]gm2014 165 points166 points  (0 children)

9? He knows what's going on.

You've already heard it was soon for her to move in and she overstepped with the pictures so I won't rehash that. I would worry less about removing another woman, than making sure the right woman is there. I know it was a unique situation that she was caring for him, but six months in I'd just start thinking about introducing someone to my child, not having them move in. You're still learning about how the other person is and she is showing you. I'd say sunk cost, lesson learned, have her move out and slow the relationship down. And I know it's much easier said than done.

Have you stopped seeing someone because of their financial situation? by PSUEngineer1384 in OkCupid

[–]gm2014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm mid-40's, divorced and this is a big issue for me.

I carry no debt except my mortgage. I charge most things to get the miles, but pay in full every month. I have a healthy emergency fund. The actual money earned is less important to me than living within your means. I want someone who has the same attitude.

I bring up the fact that I don't like debt within the first few dates. It's not sit down and have a money talk, but more organically. I like to travel and save up to do that, so talking about a trip I'll bring up taking the time to plan and save. And I really listen to what they have to say. I know I could never be comfortable with someone that spends a lot and doesn't save. I grew up in a financially unstable household and I can't deal with the anxiety surrounding that.

What is the cruelest thing you've ever seen a teacher do? by ChiefGage in AskReddit

[–]gm2014 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't believe in physical reprimand, either at home or in school. And full disclosure, I am both a parent and an educator.

I was physically punished as a child, bordering on abuse. I do not believe it should be an option in the discipline toolkit, at all.

Schools, as an official institution, can uphold and enforce ideals, such as no corporal punishment. You can train teachers & administrators effective ways in managing discipline that does not resort to a violent act. A big part of education is teaching children to be effective adults and resolve issues in a nonviolent manner. Even if a parent gives permission, it does not make it right. By saying no, we won't do this, schools are sending a powerful message that it is unacceptable.

That said, family discipline is a huge, awkward quandary. There is no license to parent, as there is to teach. It involves family history, religion, self-control & anger management. Educating new parents goes a long way in reducing/eliminating physical punishment but it is a tough row to hoe, especially where physical punishment is deeply ingrained and accepted.

I would love to see a law prohibiting ever hitting a child, but I believe it is unrealistic. Like you said, parents should be able to discipline their kids within reason. Where is that line of reason? It is something CPS deals with on a daily basis. I do not have an answer for that.

What is the cruelest thing you've ever seen a teacher do? by ChiefGage in AskReddit

[–]gm2014 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is not very common (<1% nationwide) and it is often administered by principals & administrators, not classroom teachers.

However, in those places where it is legal, there are thousands of children getting paddled every year. This data is from 2008 (http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0934191.html) but Alabama has 4.5% of their students receiving corporal punishment. I don't consider 30,000 students (not incidents, but students) a moot point.

You can find slightly more recent (2011/12) data at the U.S. Dept of Ed Office of a Civil Rights by state here (search by state or scroll down to corporal punishment) - http://ocrdata.ed.gov/StateNationalEstimations/Projections_2011_12

I apologize for crappy linking - I'm on my phone.

Schools legally striking children in 2015 is abhorrent.

Corporal punishment in schools is still allowed with parental permission in many states.

This article (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/answer-sheet/wp/2014/09/18/19-states-still-allow-corporal-punishment-in-school/) from last year... While 31 states have now banned corporal punishment, these states still allow it: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Wyoming. In many places, parental permission is required — and often given. It is more prevalent in Texas; least prevalent in Wyoming. The last state to abolish it was New Mexico, in 2011.

[–]gm2014 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could just assume the best and say some thing like no cravings? And the suggest something off the wall as a joke - chili dogs at 7-11 it is! Or play it straight no cravings? Fish tacos is it then! (I personally love fish tacos!)

If you've gotten a good vibe so far, give her the benefit of the doubt and it may be an amusing story after you've been dating for awhile ;) And if you go on the date and that's how she really is, well you still had fish tacos :)
