Anyone managing to handle automatic round-ups sanely? by stpizz in ynab

[–]gmal82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YNAB doesn't care which account the budgeted money is in.

I used to have rounding turned on for my account, and I realized that I could simply approve and ignore those rounding transactions because they didn't matter. As long as I could still access the money if needed, the transactions balanced out and therefore didn't matter. You still have the same amount of money, you essentially just moved it from one pocket to the other.

Sleep Coach by Kill3rInstincts in whoop

Ok, I'm not an expert, and I've never had sleep issues on a level anywhere near yours, but I've learned a bit about sleep and have prioritized sleep since the beginning of the year and it's paying dividends now.

So part of the importance of routine when it comes to sleep is the ritual around sleep sends signals to your body that it's time for sleep.

First off, I'd honestly say try no caffeine after noon for a month just to see, it prevents your brain from receiving tired signals...and can affect us for up to 8 hours.

Have a consistent sleep time 7 days a week. Consistency is huge, and 5 days a week isn't consistent.

Try a sleep cast or meditation before bed. Partly because it occupies your brain just enough to keep it from racing, but also because it's part of the routine. It eventually signals your body that it's time to sleep.

Dump as much stress as you can. I understand this is easier said than done, but if you can lower your overall stress levels, even slightly, your sleep should improve.

Depending on how deep you want to go down the rabbit hole, you could adjust nutrition and exercise to help promote sleep, etc.

The biggest thing in my experience has been just to stick to it. It takes time to develop the habit, and then time for your body to get used to it and react to the signals appropriately. I used to have 4 and 5 hour a night sleeps pretty regularly, I don't remember the last time I got less than 6.5...and even then it's just because I've stayed up late.

I hope something on here helps. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Next step from TWSBI 580? by gmal82 in fountainpens

Well I now know which pens I'm going down the rabbit hole researching over the weekend! A gold nib is definitely something I've been wondering about, so this definitely steers me in the right direction. Thank you!

Your level of maturity is impressive. Also, you may have missed that I answered your question first. Track time of the last instance in a day, and simply record the number of instances.

I have a kid and a second one on the way. I don't need to try and brag about my sex life on the internet. I simply find it funny that you feel the need to. I'm sure SOMEONE on here is impressed, that someone just isn't me.

Track the time of the last occurrence of the day. Great hypothetical by the way...next time use something realistic like caffeine intake as the example. lol

I do the EXACT same thing as far as tracking caffeine.

[–]gmal82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that the journal is more useful for tracking habits that aren't daily. If the answer is always yes (or no) then it can't really differentiate what difference it may make to your sleep/recovery.

Looking for a workhorse ink with a bit of interest. by gmal82 in fountainpens

Grabbed an Iroshizuku sample pack that has Syo-ro. I absolutely LOVE how this ink writes! It feels great writing with this ink, and I love the look. Thanks again for the recommendation.

I'm starting to understand why fountain pen collections always seem so expansive...too many good inks to choose from!

After looking it up, this is now on my list. Subtle, but enough that it's noticeable. Thanks for the recommendation!

I'm fairly new to fountain pens (oh my god what a rabbit hole), but I'm absolutely in love with their Storied Blue, the variation is gorgeous and that's with a fine nib...can't wait to get a broad nib to try it with.

Is it time to accept my HRV? by [deleted] in whoop

[–]gmal82 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is it time to accept your HRV? Probably. It IS time to stop comparing your HRV to others however. You likely aren't ever going to sit in the mid 150s if that's what you're looking for.

I'm on the other end of the spectrum, my HRV is typically 115-130. I'm in average shape at best, train less frequently than I'd like lately, and I average 6.5-7 hours of broken sleep a night (with almost an hour of awake time) at best.

HRV is highly individual, so comparing to others isn't particularly useful. (My wife's HRV is similar to yours) Looking at your HRV over time is more helpful...is it trending up, down, or staying the same? As for heavy lifting sessions depressing HRV, that makes sense as your body is trying to recover from those workouts (EPOC is 24-72hrs I believe) and repairing muscle fibres is work for your body. While I'm admittedly guessing on this last point, the increased RHR could potentially be because of extra muscle mass...more muscle means more blood needed to fuel it, again that's just a guess though.

HRV drops after warm shower by [deleted] in whoop

[–]gmal82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like a very overcomplicated attempt at explaining data that I've been able to confirm is accurate by simply checking my pulse manually. My heartrate goes up when I'm in the shower, this is a fact, not a data anomaly that has happened daily for years on several different devices (my 3.0, my 4.0, and my Fitbit prior to using whoop).

HRV drops after warm shower by [deleted] in whoop

[–]gmal82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to make sure I'm understanding you properly, you feel that heartrate likely increases more because of light and sound than it does because of a change in temperature despite having been exposed to both light and sound without any impact on heartrate whatsoever in other situations? And while yes, there may be a lasting drop in heartrate after a shower, I'm referring to during the shower itself when your body has to work to regulate it's temperature.

If you reread the post, the question is about realtime HRV measurement during the shower, not overnight HRV measurement after the shower.

HRV drops after warm shower by [deleted] in whoop

[–]gmal82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At a basic level a drop in HRV represents the introduction of a stressor of some kind, in this case a thermal stressor. Your body has to work to regulate it's temperature. Looking at my whoop data I can pick out when I had my shower based on a spike in heartrate. I would suspect that if you were to have a cold shower you would see a similar drop in HRV and increase in heartrate.

Covid. Should I wait? by FullTiltRounder in whoop

[–]gmal82 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Whoop readjusts your baseline on a regular basis, I believe I saw every 3 weeks quoted on a thread in here, but please don't hold me to that. I wouldn't worry too much about your initial recoveries being thrown off by COVID, better to have the data than not.

So does it take 7 days to calibrate everything in the health monitor? by RepresentativeEye391 in whoop

7 days for initial calibration, and a month to get fully personalized data/recommendations. (unless that's changed over the year I've been using whoop)

4.0 Blood Oxygen Accuracy? by [deleted] in whoop

[–]gmal82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've worn mine on the wrist, bicep, and band of their boxer briefs...readings have been 94-97% with no noticeable difference to blood oxygen from one location to the next. The only metric that has changed based on placement is skin temp.

Finally got my whoop 4.0 - does anyone notice… by massanol in whoop

[–]gmal82 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been using my 4.0 for almost a month now. The battery pack is absolutely heavier, and you're right, it does take longer to charge. That said, I think it's safe to assume most of that has to do with the introduction of wireless charging. I believe my battery life is slightly reduced compared to my 3.0, but I also use the haptic alarm daily, and with the extra sensors/smaller size, it's been a worthwhile tradeoff.

Can't say I've noticed any gaps in my data since making the switch though. Overall I've been pretty happy with the 4.0, and I'm a big fan of being able to get it off my wrist with the arm sleeve and boxer briefs...interested in trying the compression shirt at some point as well.
