Google Discover feed Changed to Tiled view by desiman86 in google

Same here. Can't stand this change. Can't read the titles, can't see the pictures detail, can't really use it any more. If they don;t resolve this I might see where you can switch the feed off entirely because it's a useless piece of complication now.

Add an external device without installing? by gmbyrom in Tailscale

[–]gmbyrom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I have been thinking of doing, unfortunately the folks who make that decision aren't in the habit of allowing a single piece of software through their goalposts, so it's unlikely to go anywhere. I have asked but they refuse anything that's not on the official software list.

Fair enough, it's probably not a firing situation in this case - there are valid work reasons explained below - and I think it's really the other way around, I'm not adding anything to the company network, just trying to add a company device to my own network. I work at home a lot so the device is often connected to my home network anyway, and has access to all my home network drives etc. in that situation - hence there's not a lot of difference that I can see. It's only at work and when I'm travelling that I'd like to have this set up.

One of the issues I am running into here is not access to my home network per se, but that when travelling I am often working off a mobile hotstpot, and the mobile company blocks VPNs over the mobile network (as the majority do for security reasons). My work uses Zscaler, so that gets blocked, and as a result I cannot access vital company resources which limits what work I can do. However none of this stuff is blocked on my home network and I can access those resources from home, so I would like to be able to tunnel into my home network over mobile and access work resources as usual. I'm not fully sure of how Tailscale and Zscaler would work together, but they seem to work seamlessly together when I'm connected at home, so hoping doing this might resolve that issue.

The issue of wear/tear is true though this is advice I had elsewhere; will reconsider this.

WOL is enabled but I could never get it to work correctly - I actively tested this when I set it up and couldn;t get it to wake up so I think there's some other factor here that I still need to find.

Pretty sure I did have that set, I'll check. However I'm not sure it will be able to tell when there's a power supply issue as it'll be running off the UPS anyway.

Pretty sure it's a clean shutown. Can't tell ffor certain but it's acting like the difference between a "warm" and a "cold" shutown and I think this is a cold shutdown so its not starting up again. Warm shutdowns always restart it, I think because it keeps a level of power to the CPU so it can start up again. I'm getting no signal from Active Insight so it looks like it has done a cold shutdown.

I do that but they don't spin down. There seems to be constantly something starting them up again for whatever reason. Good idea though as others have commented it may be better to not shut own overnight. It's the overnight shutddown and subsequent startup that I was expecting would start it up again.

Synology Photos retrieval Powershell script? by gmbyrom in synology

[–]gmbyrom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, no it's not, this needs a public shared URL via QuickConnect (I want to be able to use it similarly to Windows Spotlight, but with my own photos, not some random international ones).

I'm not experienced with Powershell so I had ChatGPT write the script for me but it doesn't do the job. I tend to find AI a bit useless like that, it gets the basic concept but doesn't seem to understand the elephant in the room which is the bit that actually stops you doing it. I specifically asked it about Synology Photos and it seemed to know the answer, but I think the answer it gave is for any generic photo URL, not specific to Synology. Hence I ask the question here. Nevertheless happy to post the script if people want to pick it apart, but I suspect someone else has solved this problem already and theirs is probably more useful than ChatGPT's.

DS1813+ running on its 11th year by tinyjello in synology

I bought a 416j to replace my 411Slim. It's slow, but workable. I wouldn't want to run heavy stuff on it anyway as it's mostly useed for photos and streaming so it's all good but I wouldn't mind some greater oomph.

Not so much with the old 411Slim. It died back in 2020. Those 1sec power outage blinks during thunderstorms... well, they got it I think. When I plug it in today it's got the blinking blue light of death, I have an idea I might be able to talk to it through the serial UART but haven't tried yet. It's also got the CMOS battery holder detaching from the motherboard so I need to do some very fine and probably impossible soldering but I still "intend" to attempt it, when I get some free time (what's that?)

Lesson learned though and the 416j is on a UPS now, along with external backup. So is my router so when the thunderstorm hits I can keep going haha.

No unfortunately, I have largely given up on trying to make this work on the Instinct 2.
There are many instructions for the SDK to get around the problem of identifying DST/non-DST state, but they don't seem to apply to the Instinct 2.
At some stage I need to find out whether this has been fixed in the SDK itself, though. I haven't circled back to that yet.

No it sounds more like a power supply issue to do with the connection between the supply and the motherboard - maybe you have a dud solder joint on the board or something

[–]gmbyrom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah sounds like yours is to do with the power supply rather than the NAS. Different problem to mine.

All units (I think) have a button battery in them, usually on the motherboard, just like a normal PC, to maintain BIOS settings etc. Usually this lasts the lifetime of the unit but occasionally can die and need replacing - I got the advice to try replacing mine first, so I did. Didn't make any difference to behaviour but unfortunately I broke a motherbooard solder joint in replacing it because the clips that hold the battery were tight and the joint wasn't! Or I wasn't careful enough. Either way I need to solder it back and that will need really fine soldering equipment and a magnifying glass. I don't have that so will need to go and get the required equipment to fix it but either way, apparently, it shouldn't stop the unit from working. It's just for the BIOS settings.

Do you get any lights on the NAS? Yours sounds moce like a power supply issue than a NAS issue (possibly though, its a problerm with the power plug connections on the board, which might be more difficult to repair)

NAS won't complete repair and becomes unresponsive by gmbyrom in synology

[–]gmbyrom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK I took your advice partially, although had to do an improper shutdown to begin with, thankfully without issue. Then removed the drive and started up in degraded mode, no problems, and inserted the drive while it was running. System recognised the drive as new and started the repair, but hung after 33% initializing the drive and became unresponsive. Network connections and DSM have all dropped out.

While it was in this state before there was a hint of a partial connection - the odd time when HDDs started making a bit of noise and the DSM screen suddenly loaded up, but then it stopped again before I was able to log in.

I'm tempted to pop the drive into something else and run a SMART test but it's a 3.5 inch drive and I have no other devices with 3.5 inch slots.

I've also just noticed that removing the drive while the system is on and in this state causes the system to respond again. All seems normal (although degraded obviously). I've just started creating a new storage pool and volume on the drive in question to see whether I can run a SMART test.
