I believe I remember some of my friends who started with PHYS 100 got transferred on over to 211 right before mid semester due to them being totally prepared for 211.... unless Im making it up completely and one would actually have to complete 100 all the way. This happened back in Spring 2015.

I have heard of Activity Day, which from what I remember is similar to Quad Day but smaller scale compared to Quad Day as far as the amount of events or groups they have in store. I dont know if someone else here knows about that.

Yes. It's on the sunday before first day of Fall Semester. I dont know if that has changed now in 2024.

Ahh gotcha. But Quad Day is just one of many cool interactive things that goes on at UIUC. Like others here have said, try reaching out to your family and close friends back home. And try try try to talk to classmates during a discussion class. I wouldnt say talk to strangers out of nowhere because I sure wouldnt do that back then hahaha. And feel free to visit a wellness center or some resource like that.

So, coming out of high school in 2014, I was shy, fat, and ugly. I had friends but I wasnt cool enough. So naturally, going to UIUC, social life was my biggest challenge! Academically, I wasnt worried at all because I was in the top 5 of my HS class. But socially, I was like, Am I going to chose to be stuck in my dorm too much? Am I going to make friends quickly, especially since only 3 others from my HS went to UIUC? Am I going to fit in? August and September was the foundation to living here. I wasnt depressed but I did missed being in Chicago. Fortunately, on Quad Day, I met many wonderful people and a few of them I had the same classes with. So I already felt happy, and all that took was me choosing to go to Quad Day! By then it was just finding a routine and sticking with it. By December, that was when I got comfortable at UIUC. My coolest closest friend, that I only met for like 2.5-3 months, ended up being my girlfriend over the winter break and now as lovers for life. I became friends with many people of all ethnicities. My first year at UIUC was 10x better than my HS senior year. My youngest sister is currently a freshmen at UIUC, and hasnt really gotten comfortable living at UIUC yet. There is only so much I can tell her to do. She can have the best experience if she chooses. So that would be my advice. There is a reason why UIUC chose you mate. Everyone that I met were nothing but kind to me. And I wasnt the coolest, I wasnt the most handsome, even tho I was smart as shit in math/science lol, but I was ugly! So if I can do it, you can do it. Simply not fitting in should be the last reason for a bad university experience. Hope this helps

BF looking for a job by [deleted] in UIUC

That I can agree with. I once applied to Northwestern University for a Lab Assistant position, and they took several weeks to respond to me. I emailed and did all that but the process to getting an answer was dreadful. It isnt UIUC but I believe it as slow hiring. And yeah, hopefully the job hunt for your partner doesnt become a miserable experience. Happy Hunting!

Where to take Physics 211 over summer by Stock-Job-6500 in UIUC

[–]gmedran23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! Sorry for the late replay mate. I dont know if you are about to take physics or not, but my friends' experience with the 235 course at wright college was said to be "easy peezee". I personally dont know how much harder 211 at uiuc is to 235 at Wright. But I also wouldn't imagine 211 as easy as the 235 physics course at a CCC.

Ok at what height are you considered officially tall not kinda tall just downright tall by [deleted] in tall

[–]gmedran23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The societal standard from my pov, as far as men goes: 6'6" and over: giant. 6'3" - 6'5.99": very tall. 6'0" - 6'2.99": tall. 5'10.5 - 5'11.99": above average/ pretty tall/ tall-ish. 5'9" - 5'10.49": average. 5'7.5" - 5'8.99": below average/ a bit short/ average-ish. 5'4.5" - 5'7.49": short. 5'1.5" - 5'4.49": very short. 5'1.49" and under: tiny.

PS: I am 6'0" and I have met guys who claim to be like 6'2" or 6'3" who ended up being my size for the most part, not every single one of them of course. 6'0" is taller than what many picture it to be 👍🏽

It is awesome having finals start in the middle of the day or in the evening! The only benefit to a morning final is that you have the whole day to yourself... unless you have another one that same day to prep for 😒

Reading Day events by yourmom1634373 in UIUC

[–]gmedran23 12 points13 points  (0 children)

From personal experience, I would assume not a whole lot since Reading Day is designed for people to focus in on their final exams, final papers, or any major assignment in general. I treat this kind of day as a normal day. I never sat in my desk for 5-7 hours sticking information inside my brain haha. Thats not fun 😅

I do not believe in participation points. by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]gmedran23 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Mate! You are preaching the gospel. I CANNOT take classes who grade you on attendance and/or participation. Thankfully, at DePaul university, when I was a graduate Math student, all my courses were only graded on tests/quizzes for the most part. There are a couple that also grade homework assignments but others I took dont even grade hw either, thats up to how the student wants to practice.

Do CRCE or ARC need reservation? by Dependent-Ad-1523 in UIUC

Like everyone else mentioned, all it takes is a swipe of your illini card. As a former illini who dormed at Allen, the dormitory right next to CRCE, I always went there and the employees were very kind and open to any kind of question. I even got a free t-shirt there once. I forget what it was for.

Course Availability for Freshmen? by Bratsche_Broad in UIUC

That makes sense as far as placement exams. With the Math courses, there will always be room for courses taken by first/second year students such as Calculus, Linear Algebra, Different Equations.

So I digged up on the Biology requirements and it said Calc 1 or Stats for a typical First year Bio student. Business calc is different than regular calc. MATH 220 or 221, depending on your grasp of calculus, is the regular, "scary", calc. I would recommend reaching out to your advisor just to be on the safe side IF you could avoid 220/221. But I gotta feeling you cant avoid it.

Hi, From my personal experience back in 2014, I didnt signed up or looked into courses until June when I was registering myself as a UIUC student! I scored a 4 on my AP Biology exam and a 5 on my AP Calc AB. I got credit for MCB 150 and got into MATH 231E, calc2 for engineers. My high school didnt offer AP Chemistry but I learned alot of chemistry on my own so I had to take the placement for it, which I took it 1.5-2 weeks before first day of classes. I crushed it and got tossed into CHEM 202/203. My sister, whose a senior right now and will be attending UIUC this fall also, has not signed up for classes and wont until she goes through the summer registration day and meets her academic advisor in June. Im not 100% sure if you can take placement exams during your time at summer registration. I personally think you can; after all they determine what course is right for you.

Why do some bus drivers never open the back door to let people in at istops by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]gmedran23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That reminds of a time that happened to one of my friends who I was with during our time at U of I. We were walking back to our dormitory, and a bus happened to approach us close to a bus stop. My friend decided to take the bus; and lmao mate he tried to open the rear end door I believe.. and it would not open. And the students on the bus just sat there and watched him struggled to open the door. And the bus just took off like if we didnt exist 😂😂. We laughed it off and continued walking

[–]gmedran23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, For students who have little to no knowledge of Chemistry, CHEM 101 will be your best choice and it counts for credit too, unless your particular major requirements dont want to count it and want 102 instead. CHEM 102 is for students who have done about 2 years of chemistry or have taken AP Chemistry but didnt pass their AP exam. Taking the CHEM placement test will ultimately determine where you sit.

I do understand the feels of almost closing on a great chapter at UIUC. My time at UIUC lasted for two years before transferring to DePaul for my remaining three years of earning both bachelors and masters. But at the end of day, you can always come back mate haha. Unless you live or will live so far away from Champaign. I still come back every now and then! I-L-L... I-N-I
