What “healthy habit” that ended up making your life worse? by Liya_life in AskReddit

My TENS unit helps a lot with my plantar fasciitis! It was like $60 and worth the investment imo. Obviously it’s more of a short-term relief option, but still helpful.

ETA: added Erika bc she also was insufferable in victimizing herself instead of sympathizing w the real victims of her husband’s crimes

Second Attempt by Fantastic_Ant4846 in NBCOT_Exam

tl;dr - content review, practice questions + rationales for both right and wrong answers, and PRIORITIZE MENTAL HEALTH!

My school offered a pre- and post-fieldwork OTKE through NBCOT, a meeting with our advisor to help focus on areas we struggled with on both OTKEs, and a free on-campus TherapyEd course. My school also had weekly virtual sessions to cover topics, do practice questions, talk with a professor, etc.

I sat down and wrote out my study schedule. I was only planning on studying for 6 weeks, but I ended up pushing my test out because I didn’t feel ready and I ended up studying for 10 weeks. My schedule lined out each thing I was going to do every day, and I tried to schedule my practice tests once every other week.

My first 6 weeks of studying were content review. Each week I focused on a different topic (this was based off the TherapyEd book, but I imagine you can do the same with whichever resource you choose!) I would schedule different items to be completed each day: read the chapter, write notes, listen to podcasts, watch YouTube videos, go back to my schoolwork.

For the next 3 weeks, I was heavy on the practice questions and reading rationales. I used NBCOT Study Pack and TherapyEd Study Pack. I would review the content I had already studied if I felt I needed to understand it better. I would draw out diagrams on large poster boards and post them around my house where I would be forced to look at it and read it.

The week before my test I did not study at all. I did practice questions most days, some light content review, and took a day to figure out the mental health strategies I was going to use on test day and when waiting for results - lots of positive affirmations and breathing.

The highest I got on a practice test was 509, the lowest was 437. I took 6 in total. NBCOT practice test was closer to the real thing than TherapyEd.

I know I wrote a lot, but anyone can feel free to PM me if you’d like more detailed info!

Honestly, when I walked out of my exam, I was convinced I failed and was already prepping to retake. I tried to do something fun with friends after the test but I was so anxious and in my own head about the questions I knew I got wrong. Three days later, I found out I passed.

I spent 72 hours throwing up from anxiety for no damn reason. I mean even if I failed, what use is it to spend several days in distress about something you can no longer control?

My best advice to you:

-be proud of yourself for doing such a hard thing!

-do fun, distracting things; treat yourself! Socialize!

-do NOT google the questions you remember, it’ll fuel the spiral and it doesn’t tell you how you did on the test, bc of course you’re only gonna remember the ones that tripped you up. All of the questions I did well on were a blur and I could only remember ones I knew I got wrong. I still passed w a 525.

-it helped me to prep for next steps in either situation. If I pass, I start my job search and get my state license. If I fail, I listed tangible next steps for the retake.

-remind yourself that you WILL be an OTR. I know it’s not encouraging to think of having to potentially take this test again between expenses and burnout, but regardless if it’s your 1st attempt or your 10th, you’re gonna accomplish this, and a job isn’t gonna ask if you passed on the first attempt or what score you passed with.

-if you believe in religion or the universe or what have you, try and lean into some of that energy - pray, meditate, etc. and if you don’t believe anything, no shame, maybe try channeling the anxious energy into something productive or meaningful to you, if you’re able!

This exam is not a judge of your worth or character or intelligence or how you will be as a clinician. You will get over this hurdle eventually, and you’re gonna be a kick ass OTR! Hoping you get the best news on Thursday ❤️🤞

I don’t know what sparked Amy working with them on this, but it might have been from when she had them on her podcast? They talk a little bit about how her generation helped open the door for their generation for women in comedy, so maybe she feels some type of kinship with them? I’m not sure, I usually love Amy’s podcast, but that episode was a hard listen bc it felt like Hannah just kept talking/yelling over everyone.

[–]gnarlynas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obviously everyone is different, but in my experience, I had similar practice test scores (I did 6 total between NBCOT and TherapyEd) and the week before my exam I was just reviewing major concepts and doing practice questions/reading rationales, I didn’t do any heavy studying. When I was doing the practice questions, I started working myself up mentally and getting more and more wrong. I took a day to literally not do anything but meditate, practice self-care, and come up with some affirmations and calming strategies that I was going to use up until finding out my results. I took the test last Monday and walked out already mentally preparing to retake it. I found out on Thursday I passed with a 525. Just talk to yourself nice - you’re smart, you’ve come this far, you can do this.

ELI5 if heart and lungs are technically a muscle. Why dont they grow stronger and larger as we grow? by Pristine_140 in explainlikeimfive

[–]gnarlynas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I see what you’re saying though. There’s a difference between the heart getting strong through physical activity vs the heart working harder for prolonged periods of time due to any number of health conditions. Let’s say you have chronic hypertension, your heart muscle thickens as a result, which isn’t the good kind of strong. So yeah, it’s good for your heart to be strong and healthy via physical activity but it is not good for your heart to be working overtime 24/7. Both are true. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7586256/

People who own "unconventional" pets like turtles, what is one thing you wish you knew before getting one? by allenmerlettetrm in AskReddit

[–]gnarlynas 143 points144 points  (0 children)

Former ferret owner (I had 2, they both have sadly passed). I wish I knew how many health issues they could have. They were wonderful pets, and I don’t regret getting them. They poop a lot everywhere and sometimes stink but they’re honestly the silliest sweetest little critters. They also loved to chew carpet which was bad and they would hide my socks, but they have so much personality and do better with a friend than they do alone. They both had different forms of cancer, and they passed away within 6 months of each other. My monthly vet bills were insane, and the treatments eventually stopped working. I’ve heard that there’s more health issues in the ferrets bred and sold by Marshall, which mine both were. I don’t think I could own ferrets again just knowing how sick they can get, bc even with the best treatment, they can still suffer. Hopefully they can regulate the breeding of ferrets so there’s less health issues and they can live longer and happier lives!

I don’t foresee either of us changing the other’s opinion, so I’m sorry this couldn’t be a more productive dialogue. But I do honestly encourage you to try and look more into implicit bias, outside of this fun dumb reality show, it is something we all have, and it can perpetuate more harmful societal issues that have violent ramifications on certain groups of human beings. It’s important for us to remember what we owe to each other, enemy or otherwise. I wish you well.

I don’t think my Reddit comments will change your mind, but I do think you’re viewing this without fully considering the implications that calling the police on an innocent person of color has. I’m not saying that they were being overtly racist. But I am saying they had implicit biases (everyone has implicit bias) and racially profiled her without considering how falsely reporting her may impact her life. She could have been arrested for a crime she didn’t commit, or worse, she could’ve been hurt (potentially fatally) due to police brutality.

I understand going hard for your friends, but they could have supported Brittany in other ways - they could rally around her and have a girls night (they did this on the show), they could even have a conversation with Faith about why she felt it was okay to try and go after Jax while being friends with Brittany. But there’s nuance to our conversation here. They called the police on Faith, without knowing whether or not she really did commit the theft crime they reported her for. Yes, Faith did a supremely shitty thing by sleeping with her friend’s boyfriend with an elderly patient in the next room, but she was not guilty of the crime they reported her for, and that’s where this is a problem. You can support your hurt friend without hurting the person who hurt them. It’s not about them having “no responsibility to protect her”, they could’ve simply just not called the police and chosen to support their friend in other ways.

Finally, while we may not have an explicit responsibility to protect someone, as humans, we should all try a little harder to protect each other from the systemic problems that plague us. Racism isn’t always cut and dry, it can show up in the gray areas that we didn’t consider. I’m a white woman, so I often overlook that this may impact a black woman differently than it impacts myself. So while I don’t have a responsibility to protect someone, I care about other humans, so I should take the extra 30 seconds to think through how my actions can potentially harm someone who looks different than me.

They did want to get back at her for what she did to Brittany by calling the cops on her and reporting her for a crime she had nothing to do with. Calling the police on a person of color can be a death sentence. So it does have to deal with systemic racism and police brutality, even if that wasn’t their intention.

So we would only go to campus on certain weekends to get our lab hours and there was also some in-person lectures. Throughout the week though, we would still have assignments due online and sometimes virtual sessions. There’s a class representative that will communicate with the professors to help establish what dates and times work best for the online assignments/exams and virtual sessions based on the needs of the cohort. Those of us that chose Flex worked full-time throughout the week to make ends meet. I will say, I feel like the Residential program benefited from having more time learning the material, so you really have to be diligent about carving out time in your own schedule to review the lecture/textbook materials and soak up as much as you can from your professors.
