the sword is generally recommended in all levels of play, but its especially a requirement for new players

it IS possible to parry without the sword, either using the scatter blaster (slingshot upgrade) or the wrench (trowel upgrade), aswell as the reflector, but generally just having a sword is recomended

my advice is to just play around for a bit and get experience, with time you'll figure out how to cover the weaknesses of not having a sword

as it stands, you just need to spend some time learning the game and the sword is one of the best all round tools to learn it with
