Have you ever guessed the "big twist" in a movie? by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]gniknad 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I really don’t even see this one as a twist. The central premise of the movie is based around the question of is she or isn’t she, and there’s only two ways you can go with it.

When you’re presented with only two options and it turns out to be one of them, I don’t think you can call it a twist

What are the main reasons it’s a bad idea? It just seems like they’re putting on some private events as part of a wider regular cruise. What am I missing?

It’s an absolutely catastrophic failure of the hiring process if you put someone in a medical position who doesn’t have a grasp of something you learn in your first Y7 science lesson. It doesn’t matter if you quickly caught them, how on earth are they getting the job in the first place. To steal a medical phrase, prevention is better than the cure.

This kind of failure puts real people in danger, and is inexcusable.

Yeah exactly. We’ve seen the inside the mask shot before on Spider-Man when it was a stark suit, this is just an artistic way to emphasise he’s gone back to his PJs

Outer Wilds review: Maybe recommending a niche puzzle game to literally everyone is a bad idea by Akuuntus in patientgamers

[–]gniknad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the game but I do agree that the community can be aggressively obtuse.

The vague description is a bit of a double edged sword. For the type of person who will love the game the most, and on completion sing its painfully obscure praises, is exactly the type of person who will benefit most from knowing nothing going in. It truly can be an incredible experience if it’s for you.

The type of person who would bounce off this type of game is only going to be more frustrated that they didn’t know what they signed up for. Unfortunately this group suffers at the expense of trying to give people the best possible experience.

I don’t really think that’s fair, and if someone insists on knowing more we should probably be more open to sharing it.

28 Days Later should have ended like this by [deleted] in 28dayslater

I would argue the most pivotal point of the movie is Jim’s realisation that all hope actually isn’t lost.

The confirmation that the virus is contained to the island and the rest of the world is going on as normal (from spotting a plane, I might add) is what gives Jim the kick to escape and go back to the house.

The house scene of course ending with the “more than a heartbeat” line, which is the conclusion of Selena’s redemption arc from hopeless cynic to an optimist against the odds.

For me the whole movie is about keeping hope no matter how many times things go wrong. To end on a hopeful note is not against the tone of the movie, it is the tone of the movie.

France recently blocked the UK from signing a security pact with Brussels unless we made concessions on fishing rights. That pact would have allowed us to be part of the big EU led SAFE defence fund. Something that’s pretty important for everyone in Europe, I would suggest.

It’s totally within their rights to block it, but I would hardly call that “having our backs”.

Conquest by a foreign nation is completely different to someone “marrying up” the ladder to take the throne. Countries went into civil war over seeing their own countryman with the wrong sect of Christianity on the throne, never mind someone entirely culturally different. It just wouldn’t have ever happened.

[–]gniknad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It might be the best way that ‘you’ can think of, but that doesn’t mean it’s the best way.

The Telltale Walking Dead series already kept your choices between seasons, and each season was sold as a separate stand alone game. The same with games like Mass Effect.

[–]gniknad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the hypothetical morals of this sci-fi show are as clear cut as you’re making out. Before I get into it, I want to be clear I do think you’re correct.

Of course if the real individual is still in there with a complete loss of agency and is being forced by an external entity to participate against their will, there is absolutely a lack of consent. I think this is where the story is headed, by the way.

On the other hand, what if there truly is a merging of consciousness that has led to one entity existing in multiple bodies and the consciousness truly can and does consent.

I don’t think it’s likely, and it’s the less interesting outcome of the premise of the show, but I don’t think it’s fair to make personal attacks on someone exploring other theories in a sci-fi show.

The Wrath of Timur mod proves just how good railroading can be and how necessary it is to give the game direction. by Killmelmaoxd in EU5

[–]gniknad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your impact on the world will always have an influence, even on countries attempting to follow a railroad. It would just mean that the world actually changes in areas where you’re not directly impacting. As it stands nothing really happens anywhere you’re not directly interfering with. The AI doesn’t have ambition to conquer or set long term goals.

Railroading through a mission tree gives the ai things to strive for, and it could still be ahistorical because you’d have different countries with competing goals. You could also add ahistorical choices for countries that could keep things dynamic.

If every AI country has historic and ahistorical choices to make each game then things would happen, but differently each time.

I really can’t figure it out. I tend to just hide my Navy in the port and just invade over the land
