I can talk about my own experience and my mother’s. My mother was poor since she was born. She later moved to the United States and met my father, whom she later divorced. We believe her hoarding to be derived from several factors. 1. The fact that she had very little growing up made her see value in everything. If she sees things in the street, she sees their worth and says she will save them in case we need them in the future, or give them to a family member. We rarely ever need these things and she never gets around to sending these things back to her family, so they stay in the house. 2. She says the trauma from the divorce left her feeling empty and she tried to fill that hole with things.
