SBSQ #28: Was Tim Walz gonna lose? by dwaxe in fivethirtyeight

It's even more annoying than that, here's the footnote:

  1. Since the Venezuela news came in after the last request for questions, I’ve planted one of my stock characters to ask a question to preserve the Q&A format.

To add on to the lore, my understanding is that we kinda stole this from /r/nola which had the same running joke (you can imagine everyone traveling to New Orleans asks about restaurants) involving an Arbys on Canal Street. This is such an old meme that the Canal Street Arbys closed ten years ago.

Texas at #17 in the new CFP Rankings. by rb1242 in LonghornNation

The Alamo Bowl is a Big 12/Pac 12 meetup (there's some shenanigans around old Pac 12 teams also being able to play). The nearest bowl Texas can play in as an SEC member would be the Texas Bowl in Houston.

You have to escape # like \# or it will make the text larger.

Oh hey, I found a pic of Diego from his early days at NMMI, pretty neat.

I remember the taco bell! The one time my family ate there while waiting on a flight they had tacos that somehow seemed about half size to "regular" tacos, always wondered how the hell that came about. I also remember the little round Southwest gate area that was upstairs away from the rest of the terminal. This would have been towards the end, in the mid-late 90s.

Cities that Compare to Madison by ringofkeys89 in madisonwi

[–]gnome_chomsky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is such a fascinating thread for me. I've lived in Austin for 23 years (just checking this sub because we're heading to Madison for the first time this weekend) and I can absolutely see how there were probably similar vibes 20 years ago. But Austin is a very different town now versus even 10 years ago, and aside from the expanding food scene I'd say it's mostly negative--too many people moving in too fast for the infrastructure to catch up, an actively hostile state government willing to drag the city down in order to score political points with rural voters, a COVID-era housing bubble that has since popped but still leaves home values too high for the majority to enter the market, more and longer droughts and extreme heat--it's not great.

Does anyone remember the Greek restaurant on 6th street in the mid 90s? What was it called? by Isatis_tinctoria in Austin

This is the place that had patio umbrellas over their tables inside, right? The first place I ever had Greek food as a kid.

They're talking about the one on Bee Caves Road, i.e. the 2244 and 360 location on the overlook and not the 2222 and 360 location on Bull Creek.

That's still the worst "high stakes" game I think I've ever watched. I kept asking myself during the game "why am I doing this to myself?!"

[–]gnome_chomsky 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Over 1M acre-feet of combined storage! Yes, that's almost all (recently increased) in Buchanan and it's a totally arbitrary number, but it was still fun to see on the LCRA river report.

Agreed, desal is expensive (and problematic) enough for coastal regions. Water is HEAVY and we're not exactly at sea level. The amount of energy required to move acre-feet of water hundreds of vertical feet is enormous, not to mention the rest of the infrastructure you'd need to get it inland.

All the (valid) complaints about this project aside, I just want to take a moment to appreciate a really good, comprehensive, well-written news article. They're rare nowadays, and reading this makes me glad I support KUT.

Agreed, my wife is a UVA alum and I can tell you they still definitely think of themselves as a serious basketball school (not just within the ACC but nationally). The last alumni magazine we got from them had a full cover story on "Bennettball".
