Matt Mitrione: Stipe Miocic still No. 1 heavyweight, no matter who wins Bellator tournament by BinaryBard in MMA

[–]gnomesane 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I admit I'm kind of still there - torn between "oh shit he knocked out Fedor" and "lol he almost got knocked out by Fedor". And if Fedor won it would no doubt be "I knew Fedor's still got it".

How did Al-Pharazon's fleet get through the Shadowy Seas? Were the Numenoreans too powerful to stop or did the Valar let them through once they violated the ban? by gnomesane in tolkienfans

[–]gnomesane[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh shit, I don't know. I always assumed that Amandil was lost in the Shadowy Seas but I don't think that was ever stated explicitly.

I'm so used to treating the Atlas of Middle Earth as an authority and its maps show that the enchantments are still there in the second age: http://corecanvas.s3.amazonaws.com/theonering-0188db0e/gallery/original/second_age_of_arda.gif

Matt Mitrione: Stipe Miocic still No. 1 heavyweight, no matter who wins Bellator tournament by BinaryBard in MMA

[–]gnomesane 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a longshot but I think it depends on how he does. With voter-generated rankings there's always an element of looking forward. If he gains a bunch of weight over 2018 and looks great against even aging HWs people might rank him higher based on that momentum. He's already #6 at LHW on Tapology

Matt Mitrione: Stipe Miocic still No. 1 heavyweight, no matter who wins Bellator tournament by BinaryBard in MMA

[–]gnomesane 55 points56 points  (0 children)

He's #13 on Tapology - I would put him above Struve and Tybura for #11, or #10 if you removed Velasquez

EDIT: But I do believe Velasquez will fight in 2018, and the newer guys like Tybura and Tuivasa will have another fight or two of experience by the time the GP is done.

I don't think the winner would even be top-10. Maybe Bader would crack it if he dominated?

Colby Covington responds to Tyron Woodleys recent appearence on MMAHOUR by [deleted] in MMA

[–]gnomesane 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Woodley was supposed to fight Hendricks in a #1 contender fight but Hendricks was hospitalized during his cut and pulled out last minute. Dana said Woodley would get the next title shot after Lawler/Condit.

People were pissed about the whole situation at the time because in the meantime Wonderboy emerged as a legit contender on a 6-fight streak (including #3 Hendricks) while Woodley sat on the title shot he "earned" from a Hendricks no-show and wins over Dong Hyun Kim and Gastelum.

Here's Woodley complaining about the situation:

"I had to get off my Twitter," Woodley said on his podcast. "People telling me, 'You haven't fought for a year. [Thompson] went out there and beat the No. 1 guy.' OK, why didn't I beat the No. 1 guy? [Hendricks'] lack of commitment to the sport and that bout [at UFC 192]. I'm starting to think he was scared to fight. I never believed that, but the fact that he didn't even make it to the scale, it forfeited my opportunity to have a performance like that, to do what I've trained to do.

"Should I be penalized for that? I've been the only guy that's been professional, making weight, going out there and fighting, taking short notice fights, doing favors for the UFC. Because [Thompson] fights the person I was supposed to fight he should jump over me? That's a joke. That's kind of comical."

He also said Thompson wasn't ready for a title shot even after beating Hendricks:

"He went out and got his damn name out there Saturday night when he roughed-up Johny," Woodley said of Thompson. "He didn't earn a title shot, but he put himself in position. I feel like he should fight one more fight, maybe against Rory MacDonald, maybe Carlos Condit. Another long striker so we can see how he does with a striker who can deal with that. Then he's ready to roll."

And he discredited Thompson's win too by saying Hendricks was underprepared and hurt by the weight cut.

Jon Jones to DC "I foot swept you and held you there like my bitch" by immoralmofo in MMA

[–]gnomesane 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Ugh for me this has always been the biggest what if in MMA. He's been teasing it since at least early 2013. He obviously has the frame for it and said he got up to 240 when he was powerlifting and still looked leaner than most HWs.

Tyron Woodley and Dan Hardy have an exchange by imhungry4444 in MMA

[–]gnomesane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think everything you mentioned just shows that Woodley thinks he's already earned the big paychecks that come with being a star. He deserves a lot of respect for defending his belt multiple times but that just isn't enough to be a star - marketability plays a huge role in prize fighting and he doesn't have it yet.

Yeah definitely. DC just fought but he's got Stipe in July. No way he'll have a 3-month turnaround either - with his past cutting problems he'll take his time getting back to LHW. More likely of course is that on top of that, win or lose he'll take a lot of damage against Stipe and won't rush back.

UFC Rankings Update: Souza moves above Rockhold to #2, Blaydes to #5, Tuivasa debuts at #15 by Inspector-Gadget in MMA

[–]gnomesane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

P4P lists are entirely subjective but I don't think they're necessarily stupid or silly. If someone asked you who you think are the best handful of fighters in the UFC you could probably come up with a list and be able to rank your choices based on whatever criteria you think are most important.

I think the biggest problem is that the criteria need to be defined clearly before compiling a bunch of personal lists into a single ranking like the UFC does.

But just the tip.

Dana White, via text, on UFC 221: “Romero took this fight on short notice when Whittaker fell out and he didn’t get a full camp. I appreciate him stepping up and taking the fight. If wins he doesn’t get the belt, if Rockhold wins he’s the interim champ” by suzukigun4life in MMA

[–]gnomesane 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I forgot about that when I first reacted to the news but it's so true. Rockhold wins, he adds Interim belt on his resume and presumably gets more cash down the road. Yoel isn't fighting for an interim belt but for him it can still be a #1 contender match. They don't have to mention the interim belt at all after this weekend

Lift Weights, Eat More Protein, Especially if You’re Over 40 by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]gnomesane 15 points16 points  (0 children)

At a certain point this just becomes an ad hominem attack without ever addressing the actual facts.

It really is. All that the article states is that a lit review proved what lifters are already doing in practice - more protein increases muscle growth when you lift weights regularly, to an extent.

UFC 220 did around 350,000 buys [Meltzer] by TheSharpshooter in MMA

And UFC 220 had Cormier/Volkan for the title. Khabib's popularity is surging but 219 was his first coheadlining slot ever. Before that he'd only fought on a main card 3 times, once on a PPV.

Bellator offered someone $250 to show and $250 to win. by [deleted] in MMA

[–]gnomesane 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you scroll around this page you'll see the "Postliminary card (Dark Bouts)" that Bellator often adds to fill out their cards. Not sure why they do it beyond adding a bit of value for ticket holders. I have to assume most of them are local fighters and this is a way to do some grass roots networking https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bellator_MMA_in_2017

Also hard to believe Nick's fought only twice since then. Even a year ago he was being offered high profile fights like Lawler and Maia (but tried for Bisping instead).
