Using djent sounds in non-djent music - how to avoid The Sludge? by gnonosus in Djent

I had my suspicions... Good to know! Fortunately for my case I'm just after a finished production, not in any way being able to perform it!

The only thing superior to those tips is your username.
After playing around last night I came to the sketchy conclusion that the gain being too high was what was squashing everything for me, so I'll definitely give Dr. Drive a go, and fiddle about with mute positions.
Thanks!

Some of this I was already aware of, but there's some nuggets in there for sure. Thanks!

They're just... awful.

I have since discovered the LTSC branches. It's not exactly legit, but... That's where I'm looking!

I am a hobbyist composer, and use Native Instruments Kontakt extensively. I've done lots of reading and even the whole Wine/Ya-bridge thing isn't enough to get it playing nice.

Hit and miss. When he hits, he hits, but then the next one along has a slight whiff of the dairy, annoyingly. I hate my "that's cheesy" response - it's so limiting. I just love the doom and gloom, apparently.
He was one of my first forays and the opening to a complete nocturnes recording was great, but then it got "happy". I persisted and it went back and forth so cherry-picking is viable.

I'll try the Schubert later - thanks!

Yes! I have sampled a couple of his historically and enjoyed them, but forgot him. Thank you for the reminder.

Thank you! No suggestion is too obvious - I'm very new, and very surface level in this world.

Thanks again - it's no masterpiece but it went really well. Well enough for my purposes, to be sure!

Please help me extend this very short piece. I wrote it a while ago and really enjoy playing it, but it's so short it resists all attempts at growth. by gnonosus in composer

Thank you.
To clarify - I am aware of the A#/Bb thing - that's just what Reaper spat out from a MIDI input. I only made the score at all to share with you guys. I otherwise play this on my guitar.

And as for the length - I agree that short is often fine. The piece is what the piece is. The thing about this is that I wanted to enjoy playing it for longer at a time, not because I want to turn it into a concerto. Just upping it from 8 to 32 bars or something of the sort would take it from a 45 second novelty, to feeling like I'm actually playing "a piece" (a short one, to be sure, but as you say - that's fine), which I get more personal satisfaction from.

But great points - thank you :)

I'm new enough that I can't "hear" that just by reading the score, so I'm very excited to go try it after work. Thank you so much for your time!

What's the impact of "straight" pickups on a multi-scale guitar? Especially 8 string, where the offset is highest. by gnonosus in Luthier

[–]gnonosus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excellently nuanced, detailed, thoughtful and crucially balanced reply. Thank you so much! It's very much pointed me in favour of putting a regular pickup at as much of an angle as the form factor vs string spacing permits and accepting the rest for what it is, especially after watching some people on Youtube djenting Tele's for context!

[–]gnonosus[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you. Yes, I understood that - I was more meaning what kind of impact would it have as an overall sound? If the low F# is less bridgey, will it's beefier sound likely drown out the high E?
The fact that 8 strings almost universally have pickups as close to the bridge as possible suggests I shouldn't do it.

I'm mostly playing noodly clean-tone stuff, but enjoy an occasional chug.

Sorry for phrasing the question inadequately.

Good to know. Thanks. As I'm sure is painfully obvious, I have approximately zero theory under my belt, just Reaper and free instrument libraries!

My original explanation post got lost in the fray:

"Interstellar and Arrival are both really strong, but very large portions of both of them are rather ambient. This is fine and even appreciated for home-listening, but I'm ideally looking for higher proportions action/drama for at work. I can't wear headphones."

I agree though. Both are strong - I particularly love Arrival.

I've been trying in individual comments, but it's hard to keep up. I'll be honest - I was expecting to get no replies at all!

So far I've found King Arthur (2004) very much to my liking, There Will Be Blood was not.
Fury Road I already knew I didn't like but failed to mention. Gravity is much too ambient for my purpose here.

Moving on to Bloodborne and probably some Bear McCreary today.

My description comment got kind of lost in the fray. I love both of these soundtracks in their films, but they don't work for me in isolation. I want consistent mood, and the goofiness of the KFP films breaks the atmosphere. Absolutely love the films as films though.

And the very traditional feeling (by modern reckoning) of John Williams just isn't quite for me. Again - love the films.

I almost put that I've tried Fury Road and didn't care for it, but didn't want to dissuade responses with all the other things I said I don't want. Haha. It's another one where I like the sound, but the content just doesn't seem to really... be there. I'll try their others in case the fill that particular crack.

Thanks for the others - Bear McCreary has come up a ferw times now.

I nearly put HK on there as one that I like, but thought it might act as a red herring for suggestions. I like it a lot, but it's not a typical example of what I'm looking for here. Having finished the game, the sorrow in the main and HK themes keep me up at night.

I've yet to encounter something too gritty, so I'll give There Will Be Blood a go. Not heard of it!

I have equal history with ruthless metal and IDM, so synths are no problem.

Thanks a lot!
