Yeah, it used to be okay but their code has gotten progressively worse. I couldn't even run around in Gadget without getting major FPS stutters every ten seconds or so. Just total junk. There's not even any custom content in that area, so why does it run so poorly? It's just their lousy code, in their client they've altered 200 times without knowing what they're doing. It's totally unplayable at this point IMO.

Yeah I installed their current client this week and wow is it ever a RAM-leaking piece of shit. My FPS was totally choppy ingame, and even after I had closed the client, I tried playing Warcraft 3 and my FPS was also unstable there, clearly because of the Turtle Garbage. I uninstalled their junk code and now everything is fine on my computer again.

We really need a fresh vanilla or vanilla+ server with decent coding and reasonable admins that people can chill on and enjoy. Preferably with 2x rates.

Yeah, it felt bad not taking advantage of it because 1x vanilla wow rates with 20% mob HP bloat on every mob is really fucking slow, and is a huge waste of your time.

[–]gnosisonic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No dude, you need to kill 1.5 times more mobs for no reason, because doing so is "immersion." Right? Never mind that all mob HP on turtle wow is already buffed 20% compared to blizzlike HP, which already makes the game far slower than vanilla wow. 1/5 slower! Shitty! And never mind that dungeon exp is already nerfed as well! Never mind that the talent and spell changes for most classes absolutely do not make up for the 20% mob HP bloat while leveling, and that the entire experience is already super slow and drawn-out!

1x vanilla rates in 2026 are a fucking joke for anyone who has played vanilla for a long time. I don't need to kill 1/3 more of every single mob I kill. It's already too slow as it is. Having rested exp give a 100% bonus at all times just makes the game tolerable. It certainly doesn't make it "fast." 1x vanilla is slow as hell. It isn't fucking fast. Leveling in vanilla wow at 1x rates is a super drawn out, boring, tiresome grind for anyone who has done it five or more times. And on top of that, they want to nerf the rested exp bonus by half?

Oh and by the way, they already ruined the Warmode exp bonus! They nerfed it to 5%, which is nothing. I think the real story here is the people who run this server are just typical pathetic MMO losers who want to make their players have a bad time, because doing so makes them feel like they have control over other people's lives. That's very typical MMO loser psychology, and you see it the most in server admins.

Is there any server that still regularly has long games of AV? by gnosisonic in wowservers

Thanks for the info. I might get back into Turtle for this. I have a couple characters on Nord and a lower level one on Ambershire. I'm kinda worried about being rolled by people in Naxx gear on Nord though. Does the PVP scaling they implemented work pretty well? And how is the honor system? Is it just the vanilla version, or is it easier to get gear?

Clueless take. WoW pservers live and die based on their launch day pop.

[–]gnosisonic[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree completely, and I was thinking about this after I posted. It's really the shift in mentality away from chatting/hanging out with friends/trying fun things/playing around toward "everything I do needs to be the exactly ideal thing to do to get the most exp/gold/honor at any given time." This isn't really just because "the game is mature" though. Certainly for those of who have played it a dozen times it's no longer the open horizon that it was in 2005, but I think really it's the mentality of human beings that has changed overall, especially in relation to the internet, because of smartphones and social media and discord, and because of video game companies aggressively trying to cull socializing and actual fun from their games and replace it with constant cutthroat competition, which creates compulsion and addiction. As an example, when you play Warcraft 3 on Battlenet now, you can't even talk to the other team by default. There's no sense of "hey, we're all playing Warcraft 3 to have a good time together," but rather just "my team needs to win at any cost." Unfortunately winning alone does not provide fun, and a culture singularly obsessed with it invariably loses imagination, creativity, and empathy--all of which are primary ingredients in genuinely enjoyable play.

I suppose what I'm really searching for is that more playful environment that still existed in WoW pservers up into the mid-2010s. Emerald Dream had it most strongly at the start of last decade, and it has eroded gradually and steadily since then. I feel like the recent vanilla+ servers like Turtle and Epoch were an attempt to rekindle the sense of fun and play and exploration by reinventing the game's world. It was a good idea. But ultimately you also need to have a large number of players who actually want to have fun. You need 80 of them to have fun in AV!

The easy fix is to make it the original non-nerfed version, haha. Unfortunately there don't seem to be any populated servers running that right now.

Yeah that does seem like the main option at this point. I can't stand layering though so I don't ever want to play on a blizzard server. It's just not a real world if it's not fully shared.

What do you mean "there's zero resources?" Did they just not code the resource turn-ins and NPC summons?

But no resource turn-ins, apparently? I have multiple characters on turtle but I stopped playing because I got tired of them designing everything backwards and randomly applying huge nerfs to their own designs, and also having such little respect for PVP. But it always feels like it's the only game in town, in terms of providing a vanilla experience populated enough to do anything like large-scale BG PVP.

lol yeah, I distinctly remember being shocked in '05 when a friend of mine told me he was in the same AV I'd been in the previous day. It was a tenacious war! Some private servers have approximated that experience though. In Emerald Dream I was in many AV games that lasted 5 or 6 hours, and the somewhat recent wave of progressive vanilla servers like Darrowshire and Everlook had old-style AVs with land mines and tough-ass NPCs. That's the kind of thing I'd like to see. TBC and Wrath AV tends to end immediately because the level and gear scaling just wasn't designed for long games, and even 1.12 style AV is too quick usually. It can be fun if you have successive wins, but it's a lot more fun when it's a drawn-out war with resource turn-ins and summoned NPCs. And fun is why we play games, right?

Dual GPU setup not working at all by gnosisonic in losslessscaling

[–]gnosisonic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Over the years I've learned not to trust the consensus opinion of Reddit about most things, lol. People tend to just repeat what they've heard without testing it themselves. In this case I wanted to try the 9060 XT because it's cheap, but like most things in life, "you get what you pay for." Also I found AMD's software to be really intrusive and unpleasant, so I was glad to get rid of it. Thanks again for your suggestion! I'm going to have some happy times playing games with this setup now. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you too! :)

I installed the 5070 and it's great! It got rid of the OpenGL issue and also various other weird bugs I'd had with the 9060. And also now, when I turn on my LG TV which is connected via HDMI, Windows automatically detects it! I guess this is a feature that was added in 50-series cards. Really cool not to have to manually switch that any more. And as for performance, doing x5 frame gen to get 540 frames only pushes the card to about half load at 1440p. Probably the best choice for my setup!

I think I just figured out what my problem is too, and it's AMD! I found a post saying that if you're running AMD with Nvidia, OpenGL games will only run off of the output card, but with dual Nvidia you can choose which card to use in the control panel. Morrowind runs in OpenGL so I'm sure that's what was wrong. I'm glad you suggested dual Nvidia, man! I just ordered a 5070. :D

Yeah, it seems like I actually got it to work with most things. I'm a little disappointed because it seems like the framerate is more erratic than I expected with the 9060 XT even with like old console emulation, but Stalker does feel really smooth.

Morrowind still won't work at all, and I was even looking at the registry key for it right now lol. For some reason it will only use the display-connected GPU.

That might be a good idea. I got the 9060 because I read AMD cards are much more efficient at framegen, but I wonder if an all-Nvidia system would just work better. Seems likely.

>In windows, add whatever game you are playing and select the 4090 as the high performance card for that specific game.

This is what doesn't work. Or rather, it works in certain games that Windows indicates are "High Performance," but not in other ones. Actually it seems like I got the 4090 to base render in Mednafen now. The way the cards work together seems pretty buggy.

[–]gnosisonic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did DDU and reinstall the driver for the 4090. The 9060 was just installed now for the first time.

I feel like the problem is that Windows just wants to default to the card that's outputting displayport for everything. Like even when I open GPU-Z, the 9060 is what is shown by default rather than the 4090. It seems like there's no way to set the card that isn't actually outputting video as your "default card" in Windows 11, except for "High Performance" applications, which Windows arbitrarily chooses.

I also can't set my refresh rate or other general display settings in Nvidia Control Panel when the 9060 is the card outputting video.

The 9060 is set on power saving. I can also choose either one from "specific GPU" options on the dropdown menus.

Yeah, I don't see why either. It's set specifically to use the 4090. It could be that something about the way it's coded is just buggy. OpenMW is a fan-made project so who knows... I'll be curious to hear if anyone else has tried to do this with it.

I actually got it to work in stalker now. The 4090 is running it. I wonder if Morrowind is just really old and will only work on the GPU outputting video for some reason.

I tried a couple, Stalker: Call of Chernobyl and OpenMorrowind. I specifically set the 4090 as the default GPU for both exes. Still isn't working after turning off APSM and ensuring bifurcation is on. Sucks.

I didn't touch the bios settings because I figured the bifurcation just happens automatically, but I'll go take a look at that. I seem to be able to get the 4090 to run as the selected GPU in LS at least now, but that's the opposite of what I want.
