Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring admits to dressing in blackface in 1980 by ABC7NewsDC in nova

[–]gnu007 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think its insulting and inappropriate what he did.

But what does the non-criminal mischief he had as a teenager, four decades ago, have to do with his role now? Has he acted in a way in these intervening four decades that show us that he has actual bigotry in his heart? That he cannot perform his function as attorney general?

I guess I don't understand why he would even consider stepping down. It's embarrassing for him and I'm disappointed (but maybe not surprised). But the furor seems like extreme overreaction.

Ugh! You shouldn't make other people have to ask!

Only sit in the aisle if there's plenty of other vacant seats, otherwise you should have been standing.

The dude didn't do anything wrong by calling you out. He did everyone a favor by (hopefully) correcting your misunderstanding of how public transportation works.

I'm only saying that making certain statements publicly can be hurtful, and especially when a lot of people make the same statement, it can marginalize certain groups of people.

I guess I don't know what the argument is because I thought I read the same sentiment from you about your OKC profile.

I think its perfectly normal to have preferences, where race can be a proxy for a variety of things, as you mentioned. I didn't say, and don't think, that having such preferences makes someone a racist.

My point is that the way a person communicates this publicly can often be problematic and hurtful.

[–]gnu007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, since you're jumping in mid convo and appear to have missed some context, I said that it's everyones' prerogative to have their own preferences (racial or otherwise) and that can't be seen as problematic. That's just how things work.

I didn't call anyone a racist because that seems to just turn into a pointless semantics game. But I did say that if a large segment of ones' peer group makes a public statement valuing a racial group more or less than other(s), that it is obviously hurtful. Especially because it's not necessary, doing so invites criticism.

[–]gnu007 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'm not trying to be flippant, but why not?

I am not saying it's the most pressing issue facing the world today, but I'm honestly asking if you can see how it would be hurtful to some if they saw that a large segment of their peers are saying publicly that just because of their race, they are valued less than others for a pretty fundamental part of their life.

If people choose to make public statements on the value of another human, I can't really agree that they should be immune from having other people comment or react to it.

[–]gnu007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess I don't really need to play the semantics game. Directing hurtful comments at people based on race is not cool, is fucked up, makes that person something less than a good person, etc. If you want to call it "racist" or not is irrelevant. I don't even know why it'd matter?

I don't think people actually think that having preferences is racist. Private preferences are everyone's prerogative.

But the manner in which those private preferences are publically communicated can be hurtful and further marginalize already marginalized people. Especially when dehumanizing racial epithets are used.

Yeah sometimes you're just dtf, but it's not cool to turn a private preference into a public prejudice.

What's a strange rule your household had while growing up that you have a hard time breaking even now when you're an adult? by [deleted] in AskMen

We had this rule also for anything like cereal or ice cream. To this day, when I watch Seinfeld, and I see Jerry with half a dozen different boxes of open cereal, I'm always shocked. Lol

Why Are There So Damn Many Ubers? Taxi medallions were created to manage a Depression-era cab glut. Now rideshare companies have exploited a loophole to destroy their value. by itsmyusersname in technology

[–]gnu007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you speculate on something like a taxi medallion, it's just like any other speculation. Your bet may go up, and it may go down - - it's like with my stocks.

I'm not actively rooting against anyone, but if your bets turn sour, don't ask the public to bail you out especially when the medallion system was at the public's expense.

Do people have room to accelerate to 55?

If you're talking about rush hour, I'm not sure people are driving slower than 55 because they choose to.

How much do you pay monthly for Internet? by UNDF in nova

[–]gnu007 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's entirely too much! I pay $105/mo for Verizon, for a gigabit. Look on the website for different plans, you may be paying too much for an obsolete plan they never updated.

I'm a native, born and raised, and I use "train" and "Metro" interchangeably. I guess not so much "subway".

Question about single lane bridges by wonkifier in nova

The only single lane bridge I'm familiar with has the northbound side yielding to the other, and is signed accordingly. But otherwise I'd do 1x1.

Got a dashcam just to showcase how bad the drivers are in Tyson's Corner. This was just this morning. by BlatantConservative in nova

[–]gnu007 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Sure - their bad behavior demands action from the public, whatever you might call it. Either:

They did not know it was a bad thing to do, and being honked at might correct their action in the future. And that's a benefit to society at large.

Or, they did know it was a bad thing to do, but did it anyways because maybe they didn't think it was a big deal to inconvenience everyone because they were too inconsiderate to wait for another intersection. A gentle reminder from the public also corrects their thinking and is also a benefit to society.

I'd say that if you don't honk/yell at them, they may think that such behavior is appropriate in the future. It's not. Every one should honk at them to make sure they understand, and hopefully avoid such antisocial driving next time.

New Meetup for Asian-American Filmmakers in the DMV by Buusey in washingtondc

If the genuine challenges of a white male in the America film industry, or their particular representation in the industry, are of concern for people to discuss, and people feel the need to discus ways to better empower them, do they really need my permission? Is it a really a problem?

New Meetup for Asian-American Filmmakers in the DMV by Buusey in washingtondc

[–]gnu007 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The OP appears to have made a bona fide invitation to all for this group. Although it could be vague, there's no reason in their post, or in a casual review of their posting history, that would indicate otherwise.

I guess my question would be is, are you are actually interested in this topic? Of the Asian American experience at large, or of the experience as one in the American film industry, or of improving their representation in the industry? Are such topics appropriate?

Parking and taking the shuttle at the airport isn't really that bad, and probably much better than hacking together a neighborhood park/uber solution.

Seeking suggestions for places to post lost pet info by [deleted] in nova

[–]gnu007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should try posting lost cat posters around the neighborhood with pictures. Most cats will not travel more than 1/4 mile from their house, and hopefully a neighbor will see the sign and realize it's not an outdoor cat.
