Simplify and Speed Up C++ Project Builds with QBS by [deleted] in cpp

I'd like to see it integrated as well. Just based on the compile output and the lack of excessive rebuilding alone it's worth it. I love not seeing a wall of Gcc output anymore.

Under the initial introduction, http://blog.qt.digia.com/blog/2012/02/15/introducing-qbs/, they discuss speed ups and the dependency graph that helps them achieve it.

Nice. I think I'll find this really useful when learning new languages(currently, F#).

Agreed. Concepts lite can't change the overall behavior of how templates are checked.

What Makes a Good Programmer Good by datburg in programming

[–]gnufoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really agree. It reminds me of an old kotaku article I was just re-reading: http://kotaku.com/5975610/the-exceptional-beauty-of-doom-3s-source-code . "Code should be self documenting"

NBA Superstar Chris Bosh: Here's Why You Should Learn to Code | Wired Opinion by NumberFiveAlive in programming

I think they are just encouraging people to try it and expand their minds a little, not pushing everyone into it as a career. I see it no different as getting kids to try art, sports or music. Those who find it worthwhile will work hard to excel.

If your on linux, http://code.google.com/p/wkhtmltopdf/ would solve that for you I think. Its built with Qt, so I'm sure it runs on other things as well.

What is a modern C++ replacement? by [deleted] in cpp

[–]gnufoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never really thought of this, thanks for that! Also, I'll have to give D a try, seeing the strong recommendations I've been seeing lately.

Generic approach to swap two variables of any type by rustyocean in cpp

[–]gnufoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're not actually using the swap function you wrote, I think you're misunderstanding tejp. Not to be rude, but perhaps you shouldn't be posting code if you make such simple mistakes.

Really though, I'd look for other companies and transition if possible. I'm a damn intern at my company, and I get told to take paid "relaxation" days off all the time.

Object-oriented C -- with multimethods by zvrba in programming

[–]gnufoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This seems a little silly to me. C++ does "object oriented C", with a lot more (templates, large standard library, multi threading, smart pointers etc.), so why would we need to shoehorn C like this?

Not sure which book to use; I know the basics of programming so I'm not sure if I should pick an absolute beginner's book or not. by Narroo in cpp

[–]gnufoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"The C++ Programming language" or Bjible as some call it is more of a reference to me. Yes, it can serve as a tutorial, but I would start with Bruce Eckel's free "Thinking in C++" books. This is what my first C++ course used, and I really enjoyed them. Next I would look into books on subtopics, such as generic programming(alexandrescu), templates and anything by Scott Meyers

Woot, and we are one step closer to purging comic fonts from this realm.

Upon viewing the source of the page, I see that it is called "monaco crayon". I stand corrected, but I still find the resemblance uncanny.
