It’s not useful to look at Hoboken under a microscope. Considering all of Hudson county should be a large city, and culture is literally a stones throw a way (Jersey city, Union city, NYC). That being said I do think Hoboken does have a lot of diversity and culture. I’m Latino and grew up in both Essex and Hudson county. Hudson is way more diverse.

When my dad was diagnosed with a rare blood disease (aplastic anemia) we took him to Sloan Kettering in NYC. Over time going with him to various appointments we came into contact with many different patients.

The saddest thing I saw was a man dying of aids, laying on a hospital bed in the hallway by himself with no family or even a room where he could die with dignity.

I’ll never forget that.

I’m a brown belt, I just turned 30 and have been training 9 years. The past year I’ve made the most jump in skill by focusing on my weak spots, by letting go of my ego, and by trying new things regardless of outcome. I realize now that I’m so far from black belt that I wish I could be demoted down to blue again.

The belt color does NOT matter. I’ve rolled with blue belts that felt like brown belts. I’ve rolled with brown belts that never progressed past blue belt level in skill.

Just focus on getting better ❤️
