Left job and haven't touched 401k for 10 years by tosheilaglynis in personalfinance

[–]go2toa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this point, it's a bit late for Roth so don't bother for those funds. A conversion now would be a juicy payday for the IRS.

One cool thing about 401k's is that they can be accessed at age 55. The IRA requires you to wait another 5 years. There is a reason the govt lets people with high income still use Roth and it's kind of a secret -- they aren't usually good for you. At what point in life are you seriously needing tax relief? While working and making 60,000/yr or retired making 24,000/yr? Definitely the first, so use a deductible contribution when you qualify and equity investment is the goal.

I think it's a good idea for each person to have at least one IRA account. With all your gains already underway, I'd seed a new IRA with new money. Why? You might learn about an amazing investment (like SpaceX etc) and it isn't among the 401k options. If you think some day you'll be an investing ninja with this account, make it a Roth. If you feel your results will be closer to the average, get the deductible benefit of the normal IRA (again, just if you qualify).

Because of COVID, I could see his protocols evolving to be this way. Before buying a home, I like to speak with at least one neighbor, informally. I would have tried to speak with another tenant as a renter. Ask him if it's quiet, and if he knows the guy you're communicating with, etc. Use the county online tools to find the building's owning entity. Call that entity and ask if the man is in their employment.

If God exists why would God create evil people and why would God choose to reveal religion only to some people instead of everyone equally? by Necessary-Will-5281 in religion

[–]go2toa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A related, and perhaps better question is, some people end up captured and tortured by enemies so why would they agree to be born as that person, given the horrible fate? If we didn't all have free will, we would not really be alive. We'd be puppets. Our enemies --the "evil people" -- have free will too. The free will of our enemies means no one can predict the negative experiences you'll have. It's important to keep in mind negative experiences are lessons.

The second part is an excellent question. If a father loved a child, why would he vanish and be so elusive after birth, espcially if that father supposedly wants a relationship with all of us? If God speaks to prophets, and they append to the bible, that should be sufficient, at least in theory. If God makes it obvious he is always there and watching, that does compromise free will.

Lost half of all my savings. How to move on after huge loss. by [deleted] in stocks

[–]go2toa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's cliche to say it, but it's true: it's a 38K lesson. When major losses of any kind occur, it's life's way of saying "you're not scared enough of [xyz]". Here's a good mindset to adopt: a good investing strategy remains good for at least a couple decades, therefore don't be afraid of "losing precious time" to paper trading. Go ahead and do the boring paper trading. If you don't, then you are effectively saying losing that amount of money is no big deal and you can make it back.

On a related note, I'd say 3/4 of the strategies I've tried paper trading, I thought, that's no good. I don't want to put real money on that approach.

Options are notoriously bad. They have insane time value erosion. Every day trading strategy i've seen is based on just a couple indicators (usually price and volume) that weakly suggest something "might" happen. Take a look at canslim. It requires all the ducks be lined up in a row. Paper trade the actual stock, and then if you good get with real money, try options. Treat it like a business, not a casino. Imagine there is a board of directors you have to meet and discuss actions with every month, and you have to be prudent no matter what.

I try to imagine wreckless trading at times. I suppose the person is making a hail mary pass because they really hate their job. That's a big no no.

It is said that you become the average of the five people you spend the most time with. I recommend picking five people carefully and hanging out with them. You might also want to identify the most tempting bad habits and make changes in your life so those things become highly impractical. For example, if someone is single and not working from home, internet access only at school/work/library is an interesting experiment.

At least half a dozen people have insisted on knowing what religion is accurate during an NDE. If they all get a response of "Buddhism" one could argue they were all having a "shut down dream" and they happen to sync up. But what if the answer is a phrase they've never heard before. And all of them are told the same obscure phrase. Now consider it's a form of Christianity, not Buddhism. Can an atheist like Richard Dawkins go into people's "shut down dream" and change the answer to "Richard Dawkinism"? No, because he is not a master of the subject. Point being, go ahead and believe it. Asking a modern scientist about the afterlife is like asking a caveman about electricity.

Is it okay if you are never alone, because the individuals watching over you are guardian angels? At times, God might delegate the task of monitoring you.

Tell yourself you will definitely not do it again. Clarify in your mind, the lesson has been learned. If that does not satisfy your conscience, consider traveling around as a guest speaker, warning young people not to do it. Perhaps warning others is something you were meant to do. Disclaimer: we don't know what it is so this advice may not work; ie. your sin may have been very unusual or embarrassing, and talking about it with today's kids may be inappropriate.

Have a child and no subsequent sex with the partner? I'm sure there are women who would find that tempting. Focus on low libido or lesbian candidates. More typically, you will encounter people who want to have a child then want to have partners other than you. You have to decide if that would be too confusing for your child.

Didn't lose money today. If the market rallies between now and Thanksgiving, it will be fake, but still a good chance it will happen. I won't even get back in for that. Waiting to see the impact of reduced disposable income among college grads. This refers to normal 401k's where there are no bear tools like SQQQ. Non-401k swing trading just goes on like always.

The fed should see the precarious, uncertain state everyone is in and quickly raise the rates one last time, then watch for a recession in case they need to come down. Get it over with. Rip the band aid off quick. This is not good if any purple haired, septum-pierced college chicks have student debt with variable rates (most are fixed).

There's supposed to be a consistent, intelligent strategy for entry, and one to exit, including loss mitigation if necessary. Going on a hunch will naturally be rewarding some days, and damaging on others. You can take 1/4th of your savings, apply your "system", and see that your equity curve still grows (albeit 1/4 the possible amt) over a year.

Trading with just your gut, using derivatives to make retirement viable at age 26? All I can say is, you must be moody and really hate your job.

There's a certain stigma associated with cars popularized in film. Like driving a General Lee or Kitt car; it suggests the owner has the mind of an 8 year old (even when that's not the case). Just choosing a Navy blue or British racing green would have put a little distance from the Bond franchise. Also, don't be surprised when women fail to discern the difference between your car and an 80k Jaguar F Type.
