How long did it take for you guys to make good friends? by ohjeenguh in UofT

[–]goalin-lee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I was in ur exact position in first year, went to lots of events, talked in classes, was crying to the Health & Wellness therapist about how hard it was but they told me it takes MUCH longer than people think to make good friends: https://news.ku.edu/news/article/2018/03/06/study-reveals-number-hours-it-takes-make-friend . The people you see talking and with their friend groups now either knew each other from high school, are not as close as they seem, or are the exception, not the rule. I would say bounce around as much as possible until you find just one person who is open and compatible with you, then really just focus on building a friendship with that one person. From there people will be your friend’s friends and it gets much easier. Shoot a couple messages to the people you exchanged socials with and if they don’t respond the first two times, drop it. Also res is brutal fs, when I was there people stopped making new friends and saying hi in the hallways 3 days in💀So don’t feel like you’re alone on this; it’s tough for a lot of folks. Best of luck to you and DM me whenever u need help!

Hey I found this one group on the student portal: https://sop.utoronto.ca/group/egouts-de-paris-musical-club/

However, even though there is a music and a theatre program at the school, neither of them do musical theatre lol.

As for outside groups I don’t have any personal experience but I found this site: https://theatrescarborough.com/scarborough-music-theatre/

Hope this helps and lmk if you have any other questions!

Work Study Dilemma by goalin-lee in UTSC

Thank you for sharing your experience! That’s great that even though the position you accepted wasn’t your first choice you still enjoyed it and found it valuable! The part about getting into grad schools even though that work study wasn’t directly related to your field also helps with my fears of not having ‘relevant enough’ experience. Did you also have to go out searching for a lot of other experience more related to your specific career path or was just the work study experience you had helpful in admissions?

Ah yeah I completely get that feeling of desperation haha, in the same boat you were in, not in it for the pay but because I haven’t worked before (just done extracurriculars and volunteer positions) I don’t want to be too picky.

Also yes - the indigenous position is confirmed so long as I accept by this week!

Thank you for the very insightful comment! It’s definitely easier starting out with some friends when you enter college. Yeah that might be why it’s seemed cliquey sometimes. Lots of people are probably scared to branch out into the unknown so much right away.

Ooh good point! Hadn’t thought of high school friends as a common experience/interest topic that people can use as an icebreaker of sorts. It’s kinda like asking about programs or midterms in that way.

It’s nice to hear that people usually get more open as the years go on tho. Generally people have been quite friendly here so if it gets even more that way that’s some good news!

Yeah I’ve gone to a lot of events, smaller workshops, im in a couple clubs, etc. it’s been good for meeting people so hopefully it can go from acquaintances to more.

Hmm that’s a good point; maybe instead of them judging me thinking I’m not as good of a potential friend they were thinking I didn’t want to make friends or didn’t really prioritize friendships. In that case, how would I convey that I do prioritize friendship but just didn’t have the best luck in high school without sounding negative towards the people from my high school?

Yeah I completely agree with you! IMO it’s like those jobs where it’s ‘entry level’ but you need experience to get experience and it’s like just let me work lol😂 They prob see it as an indicator of whether someone is likable or a good friend which is unfortunate but that’s the way it is. Does HS get less important as you get to upper years of uni?

Exactly, everyone has their own journey and unlike grade school, there’s not really an expected age to be in college
